Am I alone in my belief that this so called "split" of the WWF is not going to happen? For a few months now this split rumor has been floating around, and because I actually bought this rumor, Ive missed a chance to get tickets to a WWF show. Let me explain, I live in Virginia Beach and the WWF is coming to Richmond for RAW and to Norfolk for Smackdown at the end of the month. And because of the so called splitting of the fed I waited till after RAW aired on the 7th to decide which tickets to buy. Well the tickets went on sale on the 5th and because I waited it sold out. Yes I know Im stupid for hesitating but thats another story. The point is that I seriously doubt that this so called split will happen. I cant believe that after a serious down year for the entire company they would try to convince the fans to buy two PPVs a month. On top of the fact it would devalue already devalued titles, on top of the fact that whichever crew gets Smackdown would be screwed because lots of markets dont have a UPN affiliate or a station that airs it. I think this is just a internet movie run rampant. I mean everybody with so called inside info just knew that the 7th was the day the split was supposed to happen andwhen when it didnt the new rumor wasit would be after the rumble. I dont know I guess if it happens Ill be surprised but as of now I doubt it.

Even if the show you passed up on ended up being a WCW show after all, wouldnt you still wanna be there to see how it turns out?

I would still go.

I was thinking about going to the Raw in Richmond, but I can waste my money on something better and McMahon-free.

While I agree that the split might not actually happen, I have a couple of points.

1. I think each org would get 1 PPV every two months. THis would make since since they would have half as many shows.

2. If they took the existing belts and split them up between the two Feds, it would ADD value to the belts. The only thing to add would be another pair of tag-team belts. Then one Fed could have a World title, secondary title (IC for one, European for another), Tag-team title, and gimmick division title (Hardcore for one, cruiserweight for another). It's perfect.

Also, there are some folks without Cable who don't get Raw, and some folks without UPN who don't get SmackDown. There are always people who'll be screwed.

Also, I would guess on league would get Heat, and another would get Excess or Metal/Jakked, and that these shows would be kicked up a notch, leading to 3 quality hours of wrestling for each org. That's a good amount.

Titles are a problem if there's going to be a split. It's fine if you have cruiserweights in one league and a hardcore division in another. But what about the world title? If Flair's league has a World title and McMahon's does not, then McMahon's division is going to look bush league. But they really can't split up the world titles again, since they went to all the trouble of unifying them last month.

I suppose you could "share." Have the main event of WM be be for the Unified World Title with wrestlers from opposite feds, the winner gets to claim the title for his division. Every so often a wrestler from the other fed could come and challenge for the title to bring it back to their fed. Be a nice way to build a rivalry.

Why couldn't you split up the belts? People aren't going to carry both around for ever. I think they kept both of them just so each league could have a legit world title when they started.

This whole "Unified Title" thing makes both belts equal. So when they're split up, both leagues start out equal.

Actually the split company help these people. Let's say McMahon gets Raw and Flair gets Smackdown. Then the people who can only get Raw can watch every week and not miss anything, the people who get Smackdown can watch Flair's company every week and not miss anything. As it is now, the people who only have one of the shows will miss out on parts of the storylines, but with the split company they won't.

True, one of their favorite wrestlers might be in the other fed that they don't see, but life isn't fair. If it was, i'd get to see Jeff Jarrett every week.

I totally agree here. I think it would be cool to have a contoversial ending to the Rock/Jericho match at the RR (yeah, I know it's hard to imagine a screwjob in a WWF main event), and the next night Flair claims Rock as the champ, while Mcmahon claims Jericho is the champ. I think that is a legit reason to split the company (besides Vince and Flair hating each other). I mean, isn't that how the WWF got started in the first place- in a dispute over who would be the World champ?

Actually what he said is related to the discussion

One of the reasons the origial split didn't fly, and we were instead treated to that gosh darned neato invasion thing is that WCW is short marquee guys.

Vince aquired the WCW name, license, tapes, refs, jobbers and mid-carders, but not the top talent.
Although some argue Booker T is one, others disagree.

Still no recognized BIG WCW names came over (Sting, goldberg(hack), Nash, Hall, Steiner, Hogan etc.) except Flair (And rather late at that) and let's be honest, Ric's best in ring days are behind him, I'd rather he do the odd match now and again, but other wise stick to the speaking rolse, than try full time wrasslin'.

Admitedly I don't think some of these BIG names are needed in the WWF, but they sure would help get a second Fed over.
WWF has Triple H, Rock, Austin, Taker and even angle (With Jericho, Benoit and a few others just on the fringe) as Big Over stars.
WCW/Alliance didn't have that. So until they can groom or build up someone that they feel can take the top spot, or aquire person(s)like this, a split seems doomed to failure, unless they try an incredibly radical idea like...oh maybe...putting the focus on wrestling!!!

There's an idea, create a seperate fed known for its emphasis on wrestling, since then its not directly competeing aginst the main fed. A lot of Fans who have lost interest in the over emphasis of soap opera my return for a show that will give Edge and Storm a good 10 or 15 minute match.

Ahhh, probably just a pipe dream I guess.

Yeah and Vince further burying WCW and continuing to roll it around in the mud helped the Invasion a lot too. The split wouldn't work. If the WWF had some legitimate confidence in it, they would've probably done it by now. And does anyone else think it is stupid that the WWF would be competing with itself?

I am one of those rare ones who LIKED WCW and felt that they DID (at least early on in the 90s) emphasize wrestling over flash and T&A. They were even cool when they started to bring some of that stuff in too, with the Outsiders and the Hollywood Hogan stuff. I have watched wrestling for years, and although I'm not a fanatic and don't know a lot of this "inside" stuff, I felt their product was way more entertaining than the WWFs was.

Then, the best I can remember, WCW started to go real flat about 6 months before they went off the air, taking the women largely out of the picture and toning everything down. And I'm sure you guys know more than I do about the behind the scenes stuff that made that happen, but before that took place, I still feel they kicked WWF's butt for emphasizing wrestling a tad bit more and for having more entertaining personalities that some older viewers (non-teens) like myself wanted to see. The fact is, for awhile in the 90s they DID beat out the WWF in the ratings! So I would like to see them seperate off. I would start watching wrestling religiously again like I did with Nitro.

Ok, I'm ready to get attacked now.

Shame on you for not attending ANY shows that come to your town!

Living in Ottawa, I've learned to appreciate those rare moments when wrestling DOES happen. I've managed to attend WCW Mayhem 99, and RAW on October 15th over the past few years. I missed a house show in Ottawa in March of 2000 due to work issues that I couldn't get out of.

The WWF will not run shows with guys who aren't main eventers on television EVER, and the split won't change that.

Getting back on the title question. Why can't both companies have one World Champion between the two. Scherer is saying that when the split occurs, each side will get 4 PPV's each and share the other 4 (assuming that it's 4 of the big ones: RR, WM, KotR, SS and... SS, damn acronyms) Each side can have their own midcard championships (IC & US, Euro & TV, LH & Hardcore), but when it's time to determine who is the best, there can be only one champion. The "undisputed" champion, if you will. And at the big PPV's the champion and the top contender from the 'other company' can face off for the title.

There's probably a lot more that would have to happen to make this work, but it's an idea.

Hey man I really wanted to go, but I held off on buying tickets until after after the Jan 7th RAW, because of the rumor that the split would happen on that show. To be honest Im a big Rock (can you tell?) mark and I wanted to see the show he was at. But the tickets went on sale the 5th and were sold out for the Norfolk show by the time i checked ticketmaster.com after RAW. But Im confused why people still think this split will have WCW implications to it. I mean WCW is dead, Vince killed it and Flair, who is the living breathing WCW, has barely mentioned it since his arrival. He didnt even want Vince to hire Booker T or Lance Storm. It just make sense to me why do a split now. They have all the tools to put on two great shows a week, why split em? It wont get some of the lesser known faces on TV because the main eventers drive the ratings. I dont think people would get excited about a PPV where half the roster and the big money men are just sitting home on their asses cause its not their turn on PPV. And lets say that Rock is WWF champion but the Stone Cold division is on PPV, whats the Main Event? A #1 contenders match? Ugh....Like I said, I think its just a net rumor (not movie...LOL) gone wild.

If both have a World Title, the two World Champions are bound to be compared to one another. If one side has Jericho, and the other side has, say, The Rock, Jericho's side is going to look inferior because they would have what many view as an inferior champion.

As for the lower titles, they can't bring back the US title now. Edge stopped carrying it around long ago. the WWF doesn't even remember it existed. The Fed would be better off elevating the Euro title to the IC title level (they're at about the same level right now anyway, just one has a more prestigious history) and have one for each new "league".

the us title has a lot of history too... what you need to do is have someone acknowledge that history and bring the title back proudly defending it..... like they did with a few other titles.

I kind of like this idea, have four for WCW (or whatever they name it), have four for WWF, and four for both of them. However you named five "big ones". I would take Summerslam out. I know that it's supposedly "the Wrestlemania of the summer" but to me the King of the Ring touranment and ppv have been the "big one" of the summer. Plus Wrestlemania is the biggest ppv. And then the other three King of the Ring, Royal Rumble, and Survivor Series (originally) all have gimmick matches they can compete in. Royal Rumble, you can have 15 guys from both feds in the Royal Rumble match. King of the Ring, you can make it 4 WCW guys, and 4 WWF guys in an 8 man tournament. And then Survivor Series you can go back to the old 4 on 4 format with WCW vs. WWF guys.

You know what's so funny about all this? We fans have put about a zillion times more thought into what the WWF is and could be doing than the WWF itself! Boy, if only the people who work there gave as much of a shit as we do...
