Yeah, I was wondering if there was some connection between the gas attack and Kelvin's paranoid insistence on not going out of the hatch except in an environment suit, with the "quarantine" serving merely as a convenient excuse.

Another thought: it feels kind of odd for Locke, who's always been the "man of faith," to suddenly get all Agent Scully-skeptical when confronted with the weirdness in Jacob's shack. If he distrusts Ben that much, why kill his father just on Ben's say-so? Or was he picking up on something more than Ben's lack of trustworthiness?

Richard Alpert, Highlander, had me rather engrossed and thinking harder on this show than I have in a long time.

Those screen caps of Jacob remind me an awful lot of Kris Kristofferson. I'm sure it isn't actually him, but thats who I see anyway.

I think this actually makes perfect sense. Kelvin could have gotten word somehow that the other Dharma Initiative people were suddenly dying from some unknown airborn sickness, and from that point on he refused to leave the Hatch without a biosuit and gas mask. Or, alternatively, maybe Kelvin was part of a later wave of Dharma Initiative workers who was warned before coming to the island to stay inside the Hatch for his own safety.

Another thought: it feels kind of odd for Locke, who's always been the "man of faith," to suddenly get all Agent Scully-skeptical when confronted with the weirdness in Jacob's shack.

You know, everyone keeps calling Locke the "man of faith," presumably because of the title of that one episode, the first one of the second season I believe. I have read an interview or heard DVD commentary or SOMETHING where the writers say that "Man of Science, Man of Faith" was not referring to Jack and Locke but rather was referring to the two sides of Jack himself. I believe that was the episode where he saved the life of his future wife. He started the episode very science-driven and matter-of-fact and by the numbers. His father told him to have a little more faith, to let people have hope, and so he developed a little faith.

It's very easy to see how that dichotomy is supposed to be Jack versus Locke, but I think it's just Jack versus himself.

Ben's line to Richard after he tells Richard it's his birthday - "You do remember birthday's, don't you ?" - tells me that Richard has been on this island for a very, very long time. Perhaps as speculated somewhere in the posts above that he is part of the original crew of the Black Rock.

Yeah, I'm getting the sense that Kelvin definitely was a late arrival. Well after "The Purge".

Setting the purge/gassing at 16 years to coincide with Rousseau's arrival works for me, too. According to the show's timeline, that'd mark it at 1988. Throw in Sayid's flashback, which had Kelvin in Iraq doing mop-up work for the US Army, after the first Gulf War. Probably March to June 1991. So using that logic, Kelvin would've arrived well after the purge.

BUT... regarding the Quarantine issue; the Dharma workers were shown getting inoculated with something in Ben's flashback. So it's possible that the quarantine/infection issues existed before the purge.

Also weird that the Dharma Intro Video Doctor didn't move his left arm, again. He brings up more questions. In the orientation video that Locke and Eko pieced together, he mentioned "an incident". I remember something about the video being dated circa 1982. So, was he referring to something else? Or was the video modified somehow-- which would explain the splice/edit job.

Finally, reading everyone's comments got me thinking that all the characters on the island have some sort of parental issue (does Sayid? Or have we just not seen his, yet?). Even Ana Lucia had issues with her mom.

I can't remember if it was the orientation video with the Asian doctor, or someone talking when young Ben and his dad arrived, but it seemed like I remember hearing them say something like, "we have discovered properties on this island that we have not sen anywhere else on the planet".. I am working on memory, did anyone catch this part?

I caught that too, it went on to say that the "Dharma Initiative" was there to study the effects of said "properties".

Myself...I thought Jacob looked like the Richard that Ben saw as a child. We also have seen the teacher in recent episodes...and she also has apparently "aged well".

Seems interesting that Ben's mother died in birth, and now every pregnancy on the island results in the death of the mother...and we also know where his father issues come from now. Is Ben possibly "controlling" the island, unconciously, much like it was suspected that Walt was responsible for some of the previous happenings?

Put me in the camp that would have told Jack to STFU and tied him up before listening to him.

Finally, reading everyone's comments got me thinking that all the characters on the island have some sort of parental issue (does Sayid? Or have we just not seen his, yet?).

Yea, I've seen this mentioned elsewhere.

Parental issues
* Jack: drunk/cheating surgeon dad who may or may not be dead
* Kate: killed dad, mom hates her
* Sawyer: dad killed mom and himself
* Locke: dad tried to kill him. Mom crazy?
* Claire: nearly killed mom, deadbeat dad
* Hurley: dad ran out, though neither parent is believed to be dead!
* Jin: thinks his mom is dead, strained relationship with dad (this is one of the better ones!)
* Sun: strained relationship with both parents
* Walt: dead mom, didn't know dad five minutes ago.
* Ana-Lucia: probably on the run from mom/cop
* Ben: dad not a big fan of his birthday
* Mr. Eko: parents didn't appear to be around; his "foster family" kinda killed his brother
* Boone/Shannon: strained relationship with mother? I forget here...

Unknown
* Charlie: met his siblings (and that's strained), but not his parents?
* Sayid: well, he lived in a war and joined an army, I think they might be able to come up with something.
* Desmond: haven't met family
* Juliet: At least by the time she's leaving for the island, parents are out of the picture
* Michael? Rose? Benard? Paola? Nicki? Libby? Probably not going to find out

The great thing about this show is this all could be a plot thread, or it could be weak writing, or it could be weak writing that's been turned into a plot thread.

I saw a theory somewhere that the ash/sand/weird black-gray particle ring around Jacob's house is the Smoke Monster when it's not rampaging through the jungle. Jacob controls it (or it is Jacob) and it's the only way he has to interact with most people on the island. Cool concept. Maybe the Smoke Monster will come to revive Locke somehow so that he can indeed help Jacob.

That totally looked like a ring of protection more than an at rest smoke monster. I wouldn't be surprised if Jacob is really Ben's prisoner, and that's what he needs Locke to help him with.

I'm pretty sure she TORCHED him BECAUSE he was her biological father. Her military-faux father says as much to her, that he knew she'd kill him if she ever found out.

I hope this isn't the end of Locke. He is often the catalyst for new crazy events.
Finding the hatch, causing the explosion, and now this Jacob thing?
The key characters so far seem to be Jack, Locke, Ben and Juliet.
This can change any second but these four seem to hold the secret.
I cannot keep but wondering who is playing who.
Ben seemed genuinly concerned when Locke walked in with the corpse, but Ben is so good at playing games..
Are Jack and Juliet up to something that will help the Others? Or are they doublecrossing the others? Or are they doublecrossing one another? AARRGHH..Awesome stuff.

PS. Interesting writing, that despite seeing the abusive early life of Ben I did not feel sympathy for him for one second. Because you know he grows up to be a maniac.
Yet I did not see him (indirectly) killing all the Dharma folks coming.

And Jacob? I dunno..another interesting layer. Who is controling who? Who invokes what images?

Maybe it is the black sand ring that helps to keep Jacob contained ? That is why none of the hostiles can go to see him since once they step over the ring, the island takes them back as spirits only. (yeah I need more coffee and a life)

I am still very intrigued by Richard and his anti-aging - I am still convinced that he is part of the crew of the Black Rock.

and there is a theory out there that the whole season was predicted in the "Locke Vision" episode when Boone came to Locke in his mushroom induced hallucination.

Mrs. Dunk on watching last night - "Locke can't die. The island will heal him."

We just watched this on tape tonight and I thought it was a terrific show and couldn't wait to read this thread to get all your ideas. Awesome thread with tons of things to think about.

I hadn't thought about the Black Rock option, but it would make some sense. I like it!
