Who the *fuck* is Richard Alpert?

Sure to be the most replayed episode ever - slo-mo instant replay reveals that SOMEONE is sitting in Jacob's chair.

Unbelievable.

This episode didn't blow me away or anything. I like the Locke vs Ben feud though. Ben fears Locke, but has the upperhand due to his understanding of the island. Two things that are really bugging me ...

1. Kate's loyalty to Jack has reached stupid obssesive bitch levels.

2. Jack coming in to save the day would really suck. I would rather he just die or totally swerve the island altogether.

I was thinking Jacob could be some alter ego of Ben. I guess we will have to wait for someone to put up screenshots, but the brief shot of him in the chair sort of resembled Ben.

Edit: Has Mikhael ever won a fight?

I paused on Tivo, and I was pretty confident that it was a different actor.

I had a hard time posting this. It's small, but it looks pretty vague and I guess it probably isn't Ben after all.

Here's a link to a brighter photo:

Still too dark to tell much, but oddly it sort of looks like Locke with a wig.

I just got done watching this, and popped back to live ABC as Nightline came on. Tonight's topic? "Does God exist?"

Anyway...

Edit: Wow, I guess this only works if you need to see it three ways.

So Jacob was suitably creepy. The whole time Ben was talking, I was so confused, as it was equally plausible that Ben is crazy or Jacob is invisible.

The tie-in with Hurley's magic bus was fun. Did anyone have even the tiniest idea that poor Roger Workman was really Ben's dad?

Mikhail's 'the fence was set to stun' was weak. Still fun watching Locke kick his ass, though.

So after last week speculation seemed to be that Alpert/Ben were setting up Locke to recruit Sawyer and inform him that Juliet is a mole. But the scene between the two of them in the tent suggests otherwise (unless Alpert is playing even Ben?), then Ben wasn't anticipating on Locke warning the beach camp. That can only make the coming confrontation more interesting.

Did Alpert not age at all, or did he just age very well? If he's an original Other, its even more surprising given that we've seen him off the island.

The confrontation with Jack was lame. Less 'let Jack talk', more 'kick Jack's ass' was needed. "I hadn't decided what to do about it yet." Whatever, Jack. How is it that everyone can't unelect him as leader?

Did Ben shoot Locke with the gun that Alex gave him? ("Happy birthday, dad" indeed.) If Locke realized that Ben wasn't leading him back to the camp, how could he be dumb enough to turn his back on him? (I know, I know... its Locke.) Locke needs to pull a George Costanza and start doing the opposite of his every instinct. He'd probably kick more ass than Sayid.

He better make it out of that ditch...

"Jacob" looks a little like Eric Stoltz in "Mask".

We got a few "hows" in this episode, but no "whys". How the Others/Hostiles took over and how the minibus got up there.

Also, Ben followed a White Rabbit past the fence. Heh.

Besides Baba Ram Dass? (Yeah, I'm wondering why they used that name. Using names like Locke, Rousseau, Hume, and Bakunin as in-jokes is one thing, but Richard Alpert?)

This episode did give an interesting perspective into why Ben might feel uncertain in his leadership. The Others/Hostiles may accept him as leader because of his relationship with Jacob, but he's not one of them, and they probably know better than to trust him too far after seeing him sell out everyone around him. Maybe that's why they're only too happy to consider dumping him the moment a suitable alternative -- Locke -- becomes available.

I think the Hostiles/Others (whomever the people were who purged the Dharma folks) are an ancient society on the island, and their prophecies stated their saviour would be a man who killed his father --- and may or may not have had four toes. Ben had assumed that role, but lo and behold, here comes Locke. That's why Ben is so eager to kill him.

Actually, now that I think about it, Kate fits that description of a father-killer as well.

Poor Uncle Rico. His presence did prove one thing, however -- you can age on the island. At least people brought from off-island can. I dunno what the hell is going on with Richard Alpert. His garb and Jacob's puffy shirt make me think they're somehow related to the original Black Rock crew. But that doesn't explain their perfect English and Richard's ties to Mittelos.

They made a big deal of showing the sand/lava rocks/salt surrounding Jacob's cabin, so something is clearly up with that. Perhaps that's Jacob's essence? Maybe Jacob, the smoke monster, and everything else creepy on the island came from that volcano.

Annie = Danielle? That's my early guess.

At this point I'm hoping the Losties just beat down Jack and Juliet. Maybe they'll leave their bodies in the caves, some weird time mojo will happen and they'll become Adam and Eve.

There is no way Locke is dead. The gunshot wasn't direct, and the island can heal it.

Not a big fan of this episode. Are we assuming Locke's dead? Because I am (I know, you shouldn't ASSUME with this show). He was my favorite character, and I jumped when Ben shot him. Unlike other nancys, I'm not going to stop watching just because they killed off a character I like. I've still got Jack, Sayid, and Desmond.

Anywho, I was disappointed mostly because I was actually expecting answers from Ben about the island, per Locke's request. #1 on my list was: What the hell is the Dharma Initiative? But we really didn't get any.

The other thing was the Jack/Sawyer confrontation. I was a little let down by that, as they didn't show much beach footage at all.

The name Annie also rang a bell with me, but I'm not sure who it was. The only thing I could think of was the Other that Sun killed, but Wikipedia soon reminded me that her name was Colleen. I don't think it could have been Danielle though, although maybe I'm putting too much stock in her accent and her story of how she got onto the island.

I don't think Locke is dead. He may die just yet (and that would go right along with my Matrix theory, which not-so-coincidentally had Locke next on the death watch), but I refuse to believe they'd kill off who I consider the most important character on the show in such an unceremonious fashion.

I have absolutely no idea what to think about Jacob. Consider my mind boggled.

Locke being shot aside this was a horrible episode. We get a Jack/Juliet vs. everyone else face off and all we get is "flip the tape over"? Jacob seems to be a ghost? Mikhail lived because the fence wasn't up all the way? Locke's flashback has more to do with how his daddy hates him than what the island is about? Lame. Lame. Lame. Lame.

The scene where Roger comes home drunk and Ben takes his beer and removes his shoes... didn't Kate do the same thing for her father when she put him to bed right before she blew the house up?

I think Annie is still on the island somewhere. I don't think she's Rousseau.

Ben, being a child who could see his dead mother makes me wonder about the Others original reason for grabbing Walt. It would appear he and Ben were about the same age when they came to the island. Walt's mother had also previously died. I only wonder if Walt saw his mother at any point on the island.

What's eating at me is Kelvin. Desmond killed Kelvin (by accident, so it was probably just manslaughter) the day that the plane crashed, which was about 90 days ago (Lost Island Time). Kelvin was at least a self-proclaimed member of the Dharma Initiative....so how did HE survive the purge? The Swan Station was certainly known to the Others/Hostiles, so wtf?

Also a good laugh at Sayid's response to Kate blabbing to Jack: "Of course you did."

This was a warm up episode for all the doin's that'll be transpirin' in the big finale, and I think it was a good one. Jack, Juliet and Juliet's smirk vs Sayid, Sawyer and the rest was a tease. Wanted more. Will get more next week. This week was about Ben, Locke and Jacob.

The Ben flashbacks were very interesting. He's had a rough life and was sympathetic as a boy. Not so much so as a man, cancer aside. Like the Best Cowboys, it seems like All The Best Others Also Have Daddy Issues. Ben Linus is a liar, a dirty, stinkin' liar. He's been lying to his people and his rebellious daughter the whole time.

The scene where Locke couldn't see Jacob and Jacob started throwing stuff around his cabin brought to mind one of the theories that has been floating around that there is a powerful telepath or telekinetic on the island. It's possible there's more to that than hooey now if Jacob is what I'm guessing he is.

I've been rereading Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix. There are reptilian horses at Hogwarts that only Harry and a couple of other students can see because they've seen death firsthand in their lives. I think there's something similar going on here with Locke's dilemma of being unable to see Jacob.

Theory: To see Jacob, as Ben can, you have to have killed your father. Locke didn't really do it himself so he didn't see Jacob. (Kate wouldn't be able to either since she didn't kill her biological father.) I believe at this point Jacob is real but I'm not sure Locke saw the old man in the chair that the audience saw. That may have been a tease for our benefit (ie. to make people with DVRs rewind again and again).

Is Richard Alpert immortal or possessed of de-aging powers or does he just have really good genes? He hasn't aged a day in the decades since he met Ben as a boy, which seems like the 60's or at least the 70's considering how old Ben is.

So the original Dharma Initiative people were gassed and killed by the Hostiles/Others and Ben turned on his people. There was a power struggle for control of the island. I'm surmising the sonic barriers were to keep the Hostiles out of the barracks. Even after the Dharma Initiative people were killed, Dharma still sent more people to the island, like Kelvin. And they still seem to be dropping supplies periodically, unless that big package of food the Oceanic 815 people found in season 2 had been sitting there for a long time. I loved the explanation of where the VW van Hurley found came from and how that was Ben's father's skeleton in there.

Locke was the most bad ass he's been since season one when he inaugurated boar hunting on the island. Kicking the shit out of Mikhail was pretty satisfying. But he's also a liar and Ben had him made when Locke admitted he couldn't see Jacob. I'd hate to lose Locke, he's one of my top three favorite Lost characters, but regulars are gonna start dying soon and he's already literally in a grave.

Jacob looks a lot like Tom when he's wearing his fake beard.

I just read somewhere that Ben was born 32 miles outside of Portland, which is where Richard says Mittelos Bioscience was located.

I have another crazy theory: That the gassing of the Dharma people ("The Purge") happened 16 years ago, coinciding roughly with the timeline of when Rousseau and her people shipwrecked on the island. The gas might explain the sickness on the island that killed her people, the same sickness that led to Dharma people in the hatches quarantining themselves. But I'm reaching here a little, I think.
