You really don't see this as a no-brainer?

Really, dude. How long have you been married? It's your sister! She'll get over it. And if she doesn't - she's your sister!

I, of course, knew the answer to this all along and was just testing you. I will tell this "person" that he can just send a nice card to his sister. Thanks for the advice.

Or this guy and his wife can acknowledge that Mother's day is simply a Hallmark holiday, whereas his sister's graduation is an actual personal accomplishment worth celebrating.

When I graduated high school in 1989, it just seemed like another step before university. My university graduation was the big deal.

True or not, the woman who gave birth to you, your spouse, or your child rates, Hallmark or not.

Yeah, because THAT would happen. Spoken like a guy who has never been married. Let me lay this out for you.

Scene: Reverend J's kitchen. May 7, 2007. Daytime.

RJS: You know, honey, my sister's stupid college actually set their graduation on Mother's Day. What a bunch of idiots.
Mrs. RJS: Why would they do that? How could they be such idiots?
RJS: I know. In spite of the fact that they are idiots, I really feel badly that I'm not going to go to the graduation.
Mrs. RJS: Well, she's only going to graduate from college once. If you want to go to the graduation, that's fine.
RJS: Really? Are you sure?
Mrs. RJS: Absolutely. It's not that big of a deal. Just take me somewhere nice for dinner next weekend to make up for it.
RJS: Honey, that would be fantastic. But I'm only going to go if you are absolutely, positively sure that it is OK.
Mrs. RJS: Of course it's OK with me. I don't want you sister to be upset.
RJS: Thanks for understanding, baby. You're the best.
*hugs and kisses*

Cut to middle of scene, a few months from now...

Mrs. RJS: You are so insensitive!
RJS: But, baby, I-
Mrs. RJS: But what else should I expect for a guy who would CHOOSE TO BE WITH HIS SISTER ON HER STUPID GRADUATION INSTEAD OF WITH--
RJS: (Oh, snap.)
--ME ON MY VERY FIRST MOTHER'S DAY!!!!!~!~!1111

Mrs. RJS leaves the room, slamming the door behind her.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand, scene! Repeat every nine months or so, just for good times.

and might I add,
Don't EEEEVER say these words to the mother of your children:
"But you're not MY mother..."

All hell breaks loose.
Learn from my mistake.
Trust me.

In addition to JJD's scenario, let's take a look in our crystal ball to planning for the first Mother's Day for the little Goonlet, when irony of all things ironic, it happens to conflict with someone's college graduation.....

Scene: May 20??, Goon and Mrs. Goon are enjoying a nice, tranquil breakfast, as the little baby sleeps through the night for the first time.

Goon: I realize this Sunday is Mother's Day, but we have a real dilly of a pickle because it's my sister's college graduation too.
Mrs. Goon: Wow, that's too bad. What are you going to do?
Goon: Well, since Mother's day is simply a Hallmark holiday, whereas my sister's graduation is an actual personal accomplishment worth celebrating, I think I'll go to the graduation.

Screen is bathed in Goon Blood amid sounds of unbelievable postpartem fury, chainsaws, instruments of torture and anguished cries of unbelievable suffering.

Epilogue: Mrs. Goon is found Not Guilty by a jury which includes JJD, and 11 women who have all had children within the previous 12 months.

Outstanding...the way those scenarios have been written, it is just like you all know my girlfriend (and future mother of my hypothetical children) very well!

I'm actually going to run the scenario by her tonight just to see the reaction, but our one consistent disagreement is that she is very much an "occasion celebration" person, where I am very much not. She and her family were bewildered when I put watching the Masters ahead of celebrating my birthday last month.

I think that any other year you COULD talk yourself out of it, but the first mother's day? It is not a hallmark moment.
It's a day where you get all giddy with the wife about the fact that you have a kid now. OoOOOooOoooOoooOOooOOo..

And besides, the sister is a woman. Just tell her she might not understand now, but some day when SHE has a kid?

Back on topic; highschool graduation was special, mostly because it signified the end of an era (group of friends drifting apart after this)
Also, the first time I really accomplished something, so that was sweet.

*sigh* Why bother?

I seem to remember that it was a big deal, as someone mentioned before, it was the end of an era of my life.

The fact that I can't remember it much is probably more due to the Tequila and Beer involved...
