I was a big fan of Baron when he was in N.O. Good to see him happy and ripping in Oakland. Congrats to the Warriors! Dirk Stinks~!

I don't watch much basketball, but a Dallas team going down is always a joyous occasion.

I can't help but feel a bit sorry for Dallas. They're a good team, with good guys and an owner who I personally get a kick out of. It's just unfortunate they were matched up against one of two teams (Phoenix being the other) that had their number.

On the bright side, the resurgence of the Golden State franchise has been fun to witness. It's been a long time coming for those fans. I really hope they don't end up swept by the Jazz/Rockets.

To show how one player can make a difference, witness Stephen Jackson, who scored 33 points including 7 for 8 in 3pt FG. If David Stern had suspended him for Game 6 over his two ejections, there's no way the Warriors would have won last night. Thus the series would have gone back to Dallas, where the Mavs would have smelled blood and put the series away in 7.

And it shows once again that Jackson's a hell of a player when he isn't out being a thug.

The only bummer about this is that we now have a Phoenix-San Antonio second-round matchup, with the winner playing Houston (probably, since Game 7 is in Hosuton) or Golden State in the conference finals. The most compelling series of the playoffs shouldn't happen in the second round, and at least if Dallas had advanced the Western finals would have been something to be psyched for instead of kind of a formality.

(Yes, I realize that Golden State proved upsets happen. I also feel like the conference finals will be a repeat of Phoenix-LA or San Antonio-Denver. Yay.)

The ironic thing is that if they hadn't tweaked the playoff format San Antonio would have been the 4 seed, so you would have had Phoenix-Utah/Denver and San Antonio-Golden State in the second round.

Agreed, this is the money matchup and it's happening way too early. The winner of this series wins the whole shooting match, I think.

Well what a shock, Dirk can't step up again.

But seriously this game was frustrating and probably why I can't watch much basketball. Why is it that when a team is clearly struggling to hit long rang jumpers, they keep trying them anyway? Or if a team gets down a bit they immediatly start only shooting threes? I just find this the dumbest thing in the world. You're down and not shooting well so you're going to take the shots with the least chance of success and that'll get you back in it?

I see this happen over and over again in games and just think, if I'm the coach I'm telling those players you don't shoot unless you are standing in the paint. Once we actually sink a few then you can think about shooting long jumpers again.

So annoying.

Yes, I agree. We should just take what we considered to be the four most exciting teams from the regular season and put them together since the other teams are too boring or obviously cannot win the "whole shooting match". Dallas probably should have had a bye to the finals just so we didn't have to worry about the potential Dallas-Phoenix matchup being spoiled by a meaningless Golden State team.

Just in case, though, I'll stick around and see if the Warriors can continue their Cinderella run, or if LeBron can heave the rest of his teammates on his back and carry them to the Finals, or if T-Mac and Yao can gel like Kobe and Shaq used to and help the Rockets advance or....HEAVEN FORBID, we end up with a Spurs-Pistons rematch that everyone can puke up on.

Everyone else should probably just watch games #30 and #31 of the 162-game MLB season or maybe a regular season AFL game. It's fannnnn-tastic!

Where'd I say THAT?

Seriously, had we NOT been conditioned for the following scenario all year?

1. Two of the three from Phoenix/San Antonio/Dallas meet in round 2.

2. Winner gets the third team in the conference finals.

3. Winner of the conference finals takes on best team from hapless Eastern Conference, but that's worth watching because the East teams have shown they can win in the Finals.

That's what was going to happen, right? NOW we have Phoenix-San Antonio, which is awesome, but don't try and tell me that the prospect of the winner of that series facing either Houston or Golden State (or, heaven forbid, Utah) in the Western Conference finals is nearly as appealing as the thought of them playing Dallas (before they yacked all over themselves against the Warriors, of course) was.

The Western Conference playoffs have the appeal of a Final Four where you geta top-seeded UConn and top-seeded Duke in one half and, say, a three-seeded Marquette and a fourth-seeded Wake Forest on the other. That doesn't mean it isn't going to be good, it just doesn't sound as good as it once did.

EDIT: Don't get me wrong, I'd be perfectly happy if the Warriors won the championship, expecially if it means we seen more pics like this one.

I think you are arguing my point here. Prior to the Pistons and the Heat, did many people think the East had a chance against the West? I think not. Just like you're doing now, people were saying "OMG the Finals are gonna suck because the Pistons are gonna get destroyed by the Lakers." How did that one turn out?

How many people picked Golden State to beat Dallas this round?

What are you gonna say if Golden State or Houston/Utah owns Phoenix/SA in the conference finals?

This is why I watch. If San Antonio or Phoenix wins out, fine. They played great. But I want to be there when an upstart Rockets team or Cavs team or even Golden State pulls the upset.

How much more exciting do you think a Golden State - Dallas matchup will be next year in the playoffs? See? That's the difference by you and I - you want to see matchups based on what has historically happened. I want to see matchups based on what COULD POSSIBLY happen.

That's EXACTLY what I'm going to tell you. I would love to see a Golden State - San Antonio matchup in the conference finals. Of course, you've already determined that it's gonna suck because you want to follow some script. Of course, you probably thought Dallas was gonna wipe the floor with the Warriors, too. (I did as well.) Why the hell would I look back at what just happened and say "Gee, I wish that choking Mavs team was playing in the conference finals instead of Golden State" ?

Determining that something is "gonna suck" and determining that my interest level in the playoffs RIGHT NOW is less because the matchups are now lopsided are NOT the same things. I am saying the latter, not the former.

Please take note that SECOND WORD in my original post was "only". I wasn't trying to say "oh great the Mavs lost and now the whole playoffs are fucked" as you are making it out.

Chill out, guys. Plenty of surprises and great games are still to come.

PTI addressed this matter on the show yesterday - is the NBA better off with its #1 seed losing or winning? The argument for them winning is that the TV ratings are better when the league's most recognizable stars are in the playoffs longer, as it pulls in more casual fans. The argument against is that it's great for the hardcore fans to have teams like Golden State upset the giants and provide awesome basketball. As it is, the Warriors have essentially been playing streetball in the first round, which is why the games have been so much fun.

Meanwhile, I'm all behind any Phoenix Suns game. WICKED basketball, especially whenever Barbosa is on the court draining 3's from everywhere.

Suns and Bulls in the finals is my prediction at this point. I'd love to see the Baby Bulls win a championship this year.

Color me stunned and pleasantly surprised by the emergence of Baby Al, Stephen, Sarunas and the Warriors in this postseason, and their shocking upset of the Mavericks in the first round. Even though I've always liked the Mavs, ya gotta root for the underdog, y'know? I do especially seein' as how Golden State (along with Sacramento) is like Pacers West.

Whoever they face, be it Houston or Utah, in the second round is gonna have their hands full. Hopefully Baron Davis's injury turns out to be minor.

Gotta feel good for the fans of this organization, too, who have been enduring horrible season after horrible season for a long time. It's kind of like the Clippers story of last year's season; now another much-maligned team gets the chance to show what they can do.

Perhaps I am confused...

Does the NBA not reseed after the first round? Since #1 lost, number 2 should be playing the Warriors now? #2 was Phoenix, right?

Then #3 San Antonio would play the winner of the Houston-Utah series...

That's how the NHL is doing it. Since #6 NYR beat #3 Atlanta and were the lowest seed left, they play Buffalo in the second round.

I guess if they don't do it, they should!!

Oh, I have a feeling someone will look at the issue around the conference finals when they realize that their biggest money-maker series is already over.

And I was hoping to see Phoenix/Golden State at some point. I guess it could still happen. I think.

Yeah, if the Suns beat the Spurs and the Warriors beat the Rockets or Jazz. (My prediction is that San Antonio and Golden State win, but then Phoenix beating the Spurs wouldn't be a surprise, either.)

It looks like Stephen Jackson's trial is still on this Thursday in Indy. G.S. may have to work without him.

UPDATE! Fox Sports Radio is now reporting the Trial has been delayed till June 21st. What a nice judge.

It makes him sound like a cross between Nowitzki and Duncan, and it's hard not to start expecting that not only will he be better than LeBron, but he'll dominate the league from Day One. (Which he won't, but...just read the article.)
