Every time I check back the death count keeps getting higher and higher (22 reported by police, 32 reported by congressmen). This is so unfortunate. I wish I could take back my complaints about Anna Nicole or Imus being the top news stories over the past few months.

My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims.

Local TV here in the DC area are reporting 32 dead, up from 21 at noon.

VT has alot of students and alum in this area, so unfortunately this will affect alot of people her. It just boggles my mind that anyone could do this.

I hate guns. Guns are for pussies. If someone really wanted to kill someone, and they had to use a knife or their bare hands, well, there'd sure be a lot less murder in this world. But one day, some idiot invented a way to make murder easier than making toast. Then a lot of other idiots made that invention more accesible than it had any right to be.

A really sad story here, and my prayers are with the victims and their families. We can only hope, however naively, that we'll never have to see something like this again in our lifetimes.

I'm not sure this is quite the time to start a debate on the merits of the invention of the gun, gun control legislation, that sort of thing.

Yeah, leave that to the National Gun Owners, who issued a press release moments after the first shooting (the 2 people in the dorm, allegedly the shooters ex-girlfriend and an RA).

Over/Under on a presidential candidate using this incident to get some press: 3 weeks.

TAKE THE UNDER.

As someone who knows Virginia Tech alumni and current Virginia Tech students, and who lives five hours from Blacksburg, can anyone tell me if a list of the victims has been released yet, or when it might be forthcoming? I understand of course that first their families need to be notified.

No list yet. They specifically said that they want to do all the notifications before they announce anything. (i.e. No partial information.) However, the media figured out the name of the male RA in the first shooting, & have been showing that. There were also 2 other names announced, based on information from the parents there at the on-site grief centre. (Those 3 names are listed here (cnn.com))

Sounded like they weren't expecting to provide any additional official information til the morning. (CNN has mostly been rerunning stuff from earlier in the evening for most of the night.)

(edited by emma on 17.4.07 0112)

CNN most recently has said that the next official press conference is at 9:00am eastern time ...

The Wikipedia entry on the shootings (en.wikipedia.org) has a partial list, but that's just whatever the media's figured out on their own.

CEOIII: Not only that, but the usual gang of fame whores has chimed in, what with Jack Thompson blaming video games (before they even knew who the shooter was) and the Westboro Baptist Church announcing they'd picket the funerals... oi. Whatever became of mourning the dead?

We have no shortage of people who are using this to advance their own political agendas. There are also no shortage of 'Monday morning quarterbacks' who would have handled the situation so much better than the Va Tech police and administration if only they had been in charged. I'm already tired of it all.

Can't we just pray for the families, think about the loss of 32 talented people and what some of the students could have accomplished and not get too embroiled in analysis. It's a tragedy - akin to the suicide bombers in some of the middle eastern states. Nutty people who kill people they have no attachment to - and just like when 30 people are killed by a suicide bomber in Bagdad, this suicide shooter in Virginia has caused unbelievable pain to those who know people.

Really, other than watching it on TV, most of us are unaffected - hardened, in many cases. That happened to the media and to politicians - and since they are hardened, they want to use the event. This won't be the first of these events to be politically charged and it won't be the last. A guy in my office said, during the coverage, which I found very, very sad, this: "We should pull all our troops out of Virginia, we're not doing any good there"

ha-ha. No.

we need to mourn and not worry about agendas - think:

Liviu Librescu who saved the lives of several students by barricading his classroom door before he was gunned down. Librescu survived the Holocaust and fled Communist Romania. He was 76

Kevin Granata - engineering science and mechanics professor - Granata leaves behind his wife and three children between the ages of 11 and 14.

G.V. Loganathan - civil and environmental engineering professor

Jocelyne Couture-Nowak - taught French - Her husband, Jerzy Nowak, is also a horticulture professor at the school.

Ryan Clark, a resident advisor at the West Ambler-Johnston dorm - had a grade point average of 4.0 -

Jamie Bishop - German Prof - a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Georgia where he obtained a bachelor's degree in 1993 and a master's degree in German in 1998. his wife is also a professor at Virginia Tech.

Matthew La Porte - attended Carson Long Military Institute - was attending Virginia Tech on an Air Force ROTC scholarship

Julia Pryde - a graduate student from Middletown, NJ - A 2001 graduate of Middletown North High School, Pryde was on the school's the swim team, and played softball in two town leagues.

Just a couple of the exceptional people we should mourn.

The most current list is likely at the student newspaper site, at http://www.collegemedia.com/stories/417-300am-none.html.

If you didn't see the convocation today, go to CNN and do a video search for "We are Virginia Tech." Poet Nikki Giovanni, a VT professor, brought the house down with her closing remarks. VERY powerful. It might be called "Let's Go Hokies" as well.

List of victims and brief profiles: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18143312/

Links to some of the victims' MySpace accounts: http://mydeathspace.com/article/2007/04/16/32_people_were_killed_at_Virginia_Tech_University_on_April_16,_2007

I was reading through the comments some people left on a couple of the victims' MySpace pages, and found them saddening but also touching. They're also a more personal view than the general news outlets, which (for me at least) breaks the last bits of my "desensitization" barrier that I previously had regarding this story. (In simpler terms: for me it really hammers home the point that these were *real* people, and not just "victims".)

At this point I'm just kinda upset. I realize this was a huge deal and some people want to know everything about this idiot. Personally I think his face and words should be ignored. He wanted badly for what he thought to be shown to the world, that's why he mailed it to NBC. I say screw him, let the investigators use it and maybe let the parents of those killed look at it privately but there's zero reason to put his ideals on my tv. You're giving this demented retard exactly what he would have wanted. Those affected have no way of getting back at him for this, so the least you could do for them is not let his final wishes be granted.

I get that a news organization would be a fool to not broadcast it, but it still annoys me. Especially this line:

"The network said in a statement later Thursday morning that it would limit its use of the video “across NBC News, including MSNBC, to no more than 10 percent of our airtime.”"

Well that's just so sweet of you.

I want to see EVERYTHING. I hope Smoking Gun does the heavy lifting so I won't have to. Give me every photo, every word, every PDF. Put a dump of his hard drive up so I can see how many death metal MP3s he had and what websites he visited during his last days. I want to go through his IM logs - I hope he kept them, and I bet he did! - and see how bad his stalking habits were.

Information wants to be free. Use your damn remote if you don't want to see it, but don't deprive me if I want to see it. Don't tell me what I should or shouldn't ignore. The free market will decide how much attention he gets/deserves. Other boilerplate arguments here.

Also, the fact that they are endorsed by crazed gunmen only proves what we already knew - NBC is the greatest news organization in America if not the world.

You obviously know the bleeding hearts out there are begging for the exact opposite. In this case, I'm siding with CRZ. I want to learn everything about this guy and what made him tick.

I want to see everything. However, I don't think it's appropriate to splatter this information all over every piece of news broadcast. Fortunately, that doesn't need to be an either/or decision for the news providers. NBC (& whoever else they deign to release copies of the package to) should have the package in it's entirety on a web site for those who, for whatever reason, want or need to know the details. Having made that fully available to the public (completely at the viewer's discretion), they can then back off forcing the images on those who want to follow news of the other aspects of the events.

(I have more to say in this area, but no time to type right now.)

I'm not a bleeding heart, I just don't want this guy getting what he wanted. I totally understand that others do and that it's going to be shown. Just hate the bastard and feel that the only explanation you're going to get for "what made him tick" is that he's a nutjob and the only knowledge to be taken from him is that some people just have a screw loose.

And maybe we can see this in other people before it is too late to help them out.

Um, he wasn't exactly being subtle in his strangeness. And it appears a good many people picked up on the fact that he needed help. I doubt you are going to see something in the video that will prove helpful, because the fact that he needed help is so obvious that anyone could see it with or without 'video training'. But it's hard to help somebody that doesn't want help, and it is not a crime to be strange.

I actually agree that it shouldn't be a problem that this is available. But it is one thing to make it available, it is quite another to sensationalize the materials. I think the main purpose this has served so far is to draw ratings for the news networks and to allow people to gawk, not as an educational tool. That said, it's a free country.
