Always great to have a Kate episode and this was one that had a very interesting & potentially meaningful crossover. Couple that with some good screen time for Sawyer & Hurley and not one but 2 fights, albeit the 1st fight was rather quick & very one sided, between Juliet & Kate and I think we got some decent development in our respective storylines. The big question left unanswered was where did Locke go with Ben & the rest of the others ?

No real surprise to me to see Juliet dodge Kate's attempt to clobber her in the opening as I had read in the most recent TV Guide that Juliet actually has formal martial arts training. Still it was a sweet move and set up the rematch nicely. Now I really thought Jack would somehow be the one that broke up the fight so I was just as surprised as everyone else when it was smoky that responded to Juliet's cries of pain after Kate separated her shoulder. The fact that she later popped it back into place made me think it was really a dislocation like Riggs in Lethal Weapon. Whatever. Small point. Move on. As we later find out during the 2nd smoky attack it was Juliet who handcuffed herself to Kate, not Ben. Her reasoning was that she didn't want to be left behind again. Now Juliet said that she had been gassed like everyone else but somehow I doubt that. There is no reason to believe that she could have come to that much earlier than Kate and then carried her into the jungle by herself. And far enough into the jungle that they were past the sonic fence. And as I was typing that thought it occurred to me that when smoky was coming for them at the fence, juliet already knew the fence was off. If she had been knocked out from the gas and dumped, then how would she know the fence was off ? And if Kate & co could climb over the fence why couldn't smoky fly over it ? Okay so enough of that for now, back to the beach....

Quite a few of us cheat during the week and watch the various sneak peaks and previews available online and then wildly speculate about the seen out of context scenes we have just watched. It is actually quite humorous at times the stretches that can be made. Hurley warning Sawyer of his potential "banishment" turned out to be a con by Hurley on the con artist himself. It made for some humorously uncomfortable scenes for Sawyer as he tried to be a decent individual. It seemed to work on the beachies and work on Sawyer himself but Sun will issues with Sawyer that I don't think can ever be resolved short of Sawyer saving her or Jin's life.

Now in Kate's flashback we were taken back to her days as a fugitive and it would appear that is still the relatively early days as the FBI still has 6 men watching her Mom's trailer. We only find that out after in what was really a self serving move, Kate saves Sawyer's ex from having the cops called on her. Cassidy recognizes a fellow woman in trouble and together they conspire for Kate to have the face to face with her mother to find out why she chose what Kate perceived as a wife beating alcoholic deadbeat over her own flesh & blood. Not a pretty reunion for Kate as she learned that mom was blinded by love and sickened by what she called a murder in cold blood. As Kate & Cassidy said their goodbyes, we learn that Cassidy helped Kate because she knew what is what like to be hurt by someone you love and that she was carrying this man's unborn child and Kate learned the same lesson even though in her mind she had done absolutely nothing wrong. In reflecting on Cassidy, perhaps she saw some of what Jack saw when in his mind, the woman he loved turned to the one that he was so diametrically opposed to in oh so many ways or so he thinks. It should be interesting in the coming weeks to see if the partnership of Jack & Juliet drives Kate closer to Sawyer and to whether Sawyer will reveal the part of his past that will link him to Cassidy & to Kate. And how will Kate react if she does find out knowing how she felt toward the help & support Cassidy gave her. Did we see Kate & Juliet paired together as 2 women betrayed by someone they loved as a parallel to Kate & Cassidy ? Obviously so though I don't think we are going to see the same type of result in their relationship.

Now we need to spend a little time on Smoky before we get to the question left hanging of where did Locke, Ben and the other Others go ? Smoky was revealed to be an island wild card. Absolutely nothing to do with the Others. Juliet feigned ignorance during the first jungle encounter but stood her ground & faced smoky when he hit the sonic fence. Again, why didn't smoky go up & over ? Is smoky actually rooted to the ground in someway and where the hell did smoky come from ? Is he leftover fom a Dharma experiment run wild ? Is he the collective being of all those who came before in a Borg sort of way (and no I never watched whichever Star Trek that came from so I may be way off the mark) ? Is smoky controlled by a third underground group that we have yet to see ?

And speaking of underground, is that where Locke has gone ? Is there truly some place on the island that they can run to that is safe from discovery by the losties or by smoky ? Did Locke sellout Kate or did he really plead for her ? Locke will stop at nothing to make sure that neither he nor anyone else an leave this island. He has a fear inside of him that once he leaves this island or when this island is discovered, that the source of the power that healed his legs may be gone. And a we saw in his excellent flashback episode of 2 weeks ago, Locke fears the confines of his wheelchair above all else. And why would Ben take him along and leave Juliet behind ? He has to have a reason. Ben does nothing without a ton of forethought as to how it will all benefit him and only him.

Next week Jack returns to the beach. A beach that has turned to Sawyer for leadership. A beach that may or may not accept the addition of Juliet and we see Sayid delve into Juliet's past as only the former Iraqi interrogator can. The flashbacks looked to be island based but also should help to unlock more of the secrets as what the hold was that Ben had or still has over Juliet.

Is it next Wednesday yet ?

I usually don't care much for Kate episodes, but this one was ok. It was interesting to know that the smoke monster doesn't "work for" the others.

My only complaint: if they are going to have a catfight between Kate and Juliet, why not do it AFTER they fall in the mud???

I have two complaints about the episode.

1) The morning The Others bailed and knocked Kate out with gas, she was sleeping on the floor next to the remains of her sandwich. She was locked in a rec room and there were couches in the rear of the room. Why did she sleep on the floor? At the very least she could have just bunked on the pool table.

2) After Kate and Juliet and reunited with Jack and Sayid at the Barracks, they decided to head out for the beach straightaway. Kate and Juliet just spend a day in the jungle and were caked in mud. They couldn't spare half an hour to take showers and clean up in the Barracks before leaving?

Finally, with the Others gone Jack should lead everyone on the beach to live in the Barracks. He can cite new ownership under the rule of "possession is 9/10ths of the law." They can activate the sonic barrier to keep Others and smoke monsters out. Grilled cheese sandwiches for everyone!

I just laughed my ass off before I stopped and thought, "Hell, why not? They were comfy enough in the hatch, why not Otherville?"

I still think that while Locke is with the Others, he is only playing along to learn what he wants to know. I'm still curious about why he came back from where the sub was all wet. I also can't move forward believing anything Juliet says. She has proven to be full of ten times as much crap as Sawyer, and she probably knows WAY too much for Ben to have just left her twisting in the wind. Sayid should get it out of her with torture. Yay Sayid!

The look that Sun gave Sawyer simply said, "have fun now, but my badass husband will totally slit your throat while you sleep." Yay mob-henchman Jin!

One more thing I was talking about with someone at work - the body of Christian Shepard is somewhere on the island...if Claire were to somehow come across it, would she recognize her dad? I mean, there is decomposition, in addition to have only seen him once...but they never tied up that loose end, and this show has proven to use all lose ends for some purpose.

Damn right.

I was expecting Jack to say that the first thing they were going to do was to move everyone off of the beach and back to these really sweet accommodations .

Btw....Juliet is an obvious spy planted by Ben.

Move into the home of the people who kidnapped them? What's to say they don't come back? I'm sure Juliet isn't the only one with a key to that fence/force field thing. Sayid doesn't even want the supposedly reformed Juliette coming back with them there's no damn way he's going to let them move into the barracks where they would be sitting ducks if the Others returned.

I thought the Kate stuff was pretty uneventful as usual. The Hurley and Sawyer stuff was great but it seems pretty short lived since Jack will be back next week. Unless they decide to not follow Jack because he brought back Juliette, but even then I would think Sayid would be next in line to lead. I was pretty interested in seeing Sawyer lead the group.

About the smoke monster ...

The perimeter shield seems certainly seemed to be very effective against it, and while Lost is powered by coincidence, I have to think whoever designed the field knew it would work on the monster. However, the way it fried Patchovich was after he stepped in it. The field effect didn't stop at its skin, at least not for him. The monster was either repelled by the outer wall or knew contact would affect it. Patchovich's death seemed a cumulative affect, one that lingered after he broke through the wall. Seems odd.

Juliet didn't know about it, or claimed not to. If she's telling the truth, this could mean the Other bosses (Benry, Jericho) know about it and don't tell anyone else. Or at least don't tell someone fairly new like Juliet who, also, was apparently only a temporary stay.

She was still lying where Juliet beat her down, and I think just didn't feel up to getting off the floor.

Well, someone (Jack?) said something about taking what they could find and then leaving, so maybe they'll have time to wash up, too. (I don't watch the "next week" previews, so I dunno if they're still all muddy in those...)

No matter what Juliet is actually saying, or how "sympathetic" her words are, it's the way she says it that just drives me nuts and makes me want to see Kate hit her some more.

I totally agree about Juliet's untrustworthiness. The problem with the Others is that they've been established as totally full of bullshit, so even when they ostensibly give information that moves the plot along, it is often unreliable. For example, Mikhael told us all sorts of interesting stuff about the Others, Dharma and the purge, but because he was revealed as an Other himself, we have no way of knowing how much was actually true. In this ep, we had Juliet claiming to be trapped in the cuffs and ignorant of the monster, which both ended up to be lies.

So going by that, it's quite possible that the Others know all about the Monster. What I thought was interesting was that the Monster seemed to come together into one big column of smoke from three smaller ones. Perhaps this is a reference to the 'Cerberus' markings on the blast door map (Cerberus being the three-headed dog that guarded the gates of hell).

Anyway, this episode was yet another great example of why democracy just doesn't work (tm Homer Simpson). Jack decides to bring Juliet along, in his latest display of stupidity. Hurley decides the best person to 'lead' the beach is Sawyer? Fuck, let Sun do it. I'd hate to cross her more than anyone.

I don't know what is more disquieting -- the fact that the rest of the statue is missing, or that it has four toes.

I think the writers said that we'll find out what happened with that in a few weeks. I'm going to get impatient waiting. Was it just me, or did Locke look like he had gotten his ass kicked moreso than usual when he was saying goodbye to Kate? His left eye especially looked rather bruised. Maybe it was just the angle they were shooting him at?

The Hurley-Sawyer subplot was OK for what it was. I like the idea of Machiavellian Hurley basically running the island and creating puppet leaderships that he can replace as needed.

The stuff with the smoke monster was interesting. I wonder if we'll ever get a full explanation of what it is (it seems that no one on the island understands it). Given that the fence killed Mikhail and then stopped Smokey cold, I wonder which role is its primary objective. I can only imagine that since prior to the crash, there were only two (known) people on the island living outside the fence, it was probably intended for Smokey.

Add me to the list of people who don't understand why Jack doesn't have everyone move into Otherville. They could still leave some people on the beach to wait for rescue boats if needed. (Take shifts, like Locke originally set up with the button.) Besides, even if they all wait on the beach they arrived on, who's to say they haven't been missing boats passing on the other side of the island? (Well, aside from the fact that the island is apparently only reachable by sub or plane crash at this point... but they don't know that.)

Decent episode. Enjoyed the interactions with Kate and Juliet. I'm glad that Juliet got her arm dislocated for being stupid enough to cuff herself to Kate. I don't want to be one of those Jack-haters, but ever since Jack was left with the Others, the show has been pretty good, having him in a minimized role. Now he's back, and I can only hope he doesn't affect the balance again.

Definitely what Marylanders (like us) think of when we see those leters. I haven't watched it, mainly becasue my expectations were also very low (as in, don't bother). I may give it a peek.
