Ok, so last week I totally flaked on the recap thing (thanks again work)(and if you really wanna call it a recap), and this week I’m coming back to bring you the top 10 recap. Tonight the Idols are being coached by Gwen Stefani, and get to sing No Doubt songs and bands that inspired No Doubt. Here we go.

LaKisha is leading off singing Donna Summer’s “Last Dance.” I don’t know what it was, but I wasn’t feeling that song very much. Her singing was good, but just didn’t stand out for me personally. Should still have no issues, but I think needs to mix it up a bit next week.

Second up tonight is Chris Sligh. He’s going to be singing “Every Little Thing She Does is Magic” by The Police. He sounded really shaky at first, and smoothed it out, but it wasn’t a good save. Just wasn’t on tonight for him. Could be in danger.

Gina is third tonight, and I think could really benefit from tonight’s theme. She sings “I’ll Stand By You” by The Pretenders. She sings the song very well, and is the first I’d say should be safe tonight. Rave reviews by all of the judges tonight.

Cleaning up tonight is Sanjaya, and holy shit, that hairdo….is beyond scary. He’s singing “Bathwater” by No Doubt. If anything would save him from a bad performance it would be singing a No Doubt song, but it’s still nothing short of terrible.

Haley is up next, singing “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper. Not as good as last week, but still better than some of the others this week. For looks alone, I sure hope she’s safe. I think Simon nailed it, it was “sweet” but forgettable.

Starting the second half of the night is Phil. He’s going to be singing the second Police song of the night with “Every Breath You Take.” Sings it pretty solidly, does a very good cover, but doesn’t do a lot IMO to differentiate from the original. One of the better performances from him I liked. Should be safe though.

Seventh tonight is Melinda. Her choice tonight is “Heaven Knows” by Donna Summer. I could pretty much copy and paste the thoughts I had about LaKisha here, because it was the exact same feeling. Maybe it’s my dislike of Disco, but it was just there. I do like her singing better than LaKisha however.

Following up in the number eight spot is Blake. He’s singing The Cure’s “Love Song.” Perfect song choice for him, and he’s singing it very well. He’s taken it down tempo a little bit, and nails it again, continuing to be my favorite in the competition. Should easily be safe.

Jordin is up next, singing “Hey Baby” by No Doubt. Gwen admitted she was surprised she was singing the song. She sang it pretty well, and while not having the chops that Melinda or LaKisha has, I just think has a better shot than they do. Should be safe.

Closing up tonight is Chris R. He’s singing “Don’t Speak” by No Doubt. The first half of the song was pretty good, no complaints, but when it got to the more intense portion of the song, it just didn’t sound good to me. I think he’ll probably be safe again, but wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the bottom three again.

And this is how I got them….

Blake
Gina
Phil
Jordin
Melinda
LaKisha
Haley
Chris R.
Chris S.
Sanjaya

Funny thing, I liked Haley tonight, but she still ended up being near the bottom. The end of the road could be for Chris S. since Sanjaya has some sort of magic immunity. Chris, Sanjaya and I think Chris R. could be all in the bottom 3.

See ya next week.

I was just compiling a similar report for my site, and I just have to say...I wasn't a big fan of Jordan's performance. "Hey Baby" is one of those songs that only really sounds good "produced" especially when you have to hack up the arrangment like that to get it to fit the time constraint. Also, she didn't really know how to carry herself on stage with that kind of song (frumpy skirts don't work when you're supposed to be flirty).

Melinda was predictably boring, Blake was particularily good in rather boring way, and Phil sounded EXACTLY LIKE STING which goes against everything the judges have said about "making a song your own," but it was such a good impression they couldn't help but give him props for it.

Sanjaya is the most entertainingly terrible thing to ever happen to this show. Better than Scott Savol, better than William Hung. Simon just giving up trying to figure out Sanjaya was terrific. Awesomely bad hair, awesomely bad singing, awesomely bad song choice, he forgot the words, he forgot to change the lyrics at one point so he called himself a girl, it was just a beautiful, beautiful mess. Bathwater is, again, one of those songs that you have to sing with No Doubt's production behind it. Gwen's vocals are really good (and I really do like that song), but the house band trying to play it just sounded weird. Not that it wouldn't have been weird otherwise.

Chris Sligh is gone. I love the fat bastard, but on a night when everybody but Sanjaya and Chris Richardson (who sang one of No Doubt's better "live" songs, and completely botched it with his weird side of the mouth singing), was more or less on point, he missed the mark.

But again what is with the themes this year? Was Gwen presiding over "Three No Doubt Songs (and then some other stuff)" week or something? I swear that the themes are being manipulated by the producers so that neither Lakisha nor Melinda has to leave their comfort zone. I mean, what the hell does Donna Summer have to do with Gwen Stefani?

First, did Gwen do this just for the air time? Cause it seems like she didn't like any of them. What a bitchy woman. And how much work has she had done, cause that face ain't what it used to be.

Lakisha - Who is dressing these people?? WE DON'T WANT TO SEE YOUR GROSS MISALIGNED BOOBS! You aren't sexy so stop trying to be. God I can't even comment on the singing, the stupid outfit has me so distracted. Looks like a 40 year old fat woman trying to act like a 25 year old hot chick.

Chris S - The magic is gone my friend. Your jokes aren't as funny and your singing is limited. Pretty much every week he'll get off the beat a little. Can it be possible to be a singer who can't keep a beat?

Gina - I...guess this was decent. Again with the strange outfits.

Sanjaya - Is he in on the joke? He must be right? He's getting close to that Kevin Covais kinda cocky for no damn reason area if not. They've even got Seacrest playing up this crap. They've just resigned themselves to his sucky ass not going anywhere yet.

Haley - Oh, we're back to Ms. America contestant tonight. Bleh.

Phil - Hmmm, lemme think. Yep, still sucks.

Melinda - Well she did a good job with it singing. But she LOOKED like she could/should be singing this back when it was new. She made herself look old...very old here. No longer the favorite.

Blake - Decent, but a little boring I suppose. I think he's being smart by not doing the beatbox thing every week though.

Jordin - You know, this would have been ten times better had she worn something that matched the song. Really a good job singing though.

Chris R - This morning I honestly can't remember this performance. Probably not a good thing for him.

Wow, just a dull night. Hard to pick who might go home. Of course it should be Sanjaya and maybe it finally will be. Yeah, why not.

I just don't get the Blake thing. If the thing was to vote for who you wanted off the show I would have been on the phone calling his number. He just grates on me for some reason.

Sanjaya should be given immunity until the final show, because I cannot imagine anything more entertaining than the judges trying to find something to say every week. Plus every week he's there increases the odds of some other contestant snapping when asked "how do you think you did?" and answering "Better than fucking Sanjaya!" And that would be awesome.

Jordin is going to win, but damn if that outfit tonight didn't make clear that her father is a former NFL player, and that he makes up part of her genetic makeup. That is a big girl.

Speaking of big girls - Gina made Seacrest look like a toy next to her. She is one big rocker chick.

I thought that Blake was meh. Phil was boring. Chris R was terrible. Chris S was all wrong for that song. And the PonyHawk was just downright scary. I was afraid Lakisha was going to unleash the big guns. Melinda needs to fire her personal stylist and did the girl even say a word after she stopped singing ? She just sat there nodding with that big grin. Jordin scared me with those big hoop earrings and the picnic tablecloth shirt as she pranced around stage. Haley is the token eye andy but she is going to have to show even more leg to compensate for her weak voice and lack of charisma. Gina looked good and hit the song just right. I personally thought that she won the night.

Sanjaya should obviouslybeing going home but that isn't happening because not only does he have his legion of anti-fans in the Stern's & votefortheworst's out there - but he also has an untapped viewing resource behind him that hasn't been represented on the Idol stage before. With that said, I would send Chris R or Haley packing but the "my bad" may just be the end of Chris Sligh.

I was surprised they got all 10 of the performances in in under 70 minutes. Why can't they do that every week? (That's a rhetorical question. I know why.)

Lakisha - Look, I know there's probably not enough No Doubt/Gwen Stefani songs to go around, but neither Lakisha nor Melinda have had to venture out of their comfort zones yet. Donna Summer? C'mon. Anyway, it was a ho-hum performance to me.

Chris S. - Horrid. He probably realized too late that the song was a little over his head. To me, Sting is like Mariah, Celine, Whitney et. al. Either you have the voice, or don't even try.

Gina - Perfect song choice. As long as she picks the right song, she can go to the end. Not bratty (Chris R.), not super humble (Melinda) - her attitude won't wear on anyone, I think.

Sanjaya - Please. My theory is the longer he goes and the longer he gets crucified in the media, the more insane his performances will get. I worry he may pull out a performance of Pearl Jam's "Jeremy" down the road and act out the video.

Haley - Do the people who vote for her really care how she sings? Passable perfomrance.

Phil - Hate on him all you want. I loved this performance. Simon hit it on the head - this was the first week it looked like Phil actually cared. I really thought he was the best of the night.

Melinda - Great vocal, as always. Like I said, she's in the same comfort zone as Lakisha so I couldn't be bothered to care much about the performance.

Blake - I hate The Cure, but he did well, I guess.

Jordin - I must've missed something here, because I thought she was pretty bad (unlike last week). Seems like a difficult song to really do well, though.

Chris R. - I seriously can't believe this guy isn't gone. You could pull about 5,000 guys off the street who can do what he does. And most of them probably wouldn't have the holier-than-thou attitude that he seems to have. Of course, Paula feeding his ego probably doesn't help.

My top three would be:

Phil
Gina
Melinda

And my bottom two would be:

Chris R.
Sanjaya

Of course, I predict Chris R. will go home because Sanjaya has the Legion of Dumbasses and Pre-pubescent Girls behind him.

EDIT: My bad, Excalibur. I hadn't even seen that you said the exact same thing about Lakisha and Melinda. At least I know I'm not alone.

Since there was nothing on, we had this on in the background last night. I will say this - Sanjaya has officially sucked me in to see just how godawful he is.

Gina did a real nice job last night.

You do realize that you said this and then proceeded to talk about how you didn't like any of the contestants. Maybe she was just being honest that they all sucked?

And I just thought of this, but if Gina would've sang "Just a Girl" last night, it would have been fantastic. Both as a reaction to the judges trying to force her into the rock persona (because it's a "rock" song, but has a lot of the soft vocal stuff you can tell she really wants to do), and because the judges would've been forced to like it.

I think that it could've been her "it" moment.

Just awful. Are these the best ten singers that could get out millions of auditions?

I have been on bandwagon for Blake and Gina so far, but I can see where Blake could grate on your nerves. There's a woman I work with that just can't stand him, but she really like Jordin. So just to wind her up, I told her that there's an internet rumor that Blake and Jordin were dating. I thought her eyes were going to pop out of her head!

I thought Phil was pretty good tonight too.

Sanjaya should go home, but he won't.

Haley should be in the bottom three, with the two Chrisses.

I predict that Haley goes home.

Of course not! These are the people they thought would get the best ratings. "thought" being the important word there.

Granted I still think there's plenty of talent up there, it was just a bad week overall. The theme did not help.

So long, Chris Sligh. He's the next voted off. Meanwhile, Sanjaya has survived yet another week and fears continue to increase that he just might win the whole damn thing!

With yet another week under his belt, the fuss over his confounding staying power is bound to intensify.

In the short run, his presence makes for spirited debate, but if Sanjaya Malakar, 17, is standing in the winner's circle, "it would destroy credibility the show's built up in the past five seasons," music consultant Tom Vickers says. "Instead of 30 million viewers a week, it might draw 20 million."

A Sanjaya victory "will ruin the show," says fan Catherine Schloss of Folsom, Calif. "If he wins, I really don't think American Idol will be back."

Says Bryce Smart of Seattle, "The franchise would be cheapened greatly, perhaps beyond repair." He says Idol's integrity would be shattered if Sanjaya wins or even outlasts a superior talent such as LaKisha.

I haven't watched this season, but the Sanjaya-phenomenon is simply a function of the way the voting is done. By having people vote FOR their favorites instead of AGAINST their least favorite, this kind of thing happens every year, or have we already forgetten the red-headed Jon-whatshisname experience. If you are just kind of "there", you won't get votes even if you are not offensive. Meanwhile Sanjaya has two powerful voting blocs of people behind him: Indians and assholes.

An ethnic group can make or break a person's Idol-run, see Jasmine Trias getting lots of Hawaiian votes and going about three weeks too far in season three, or Fantasia, LaToya, and Jennifer Hudson cancelling each other out and causing Jennifer's too early-elimination. (That isn't very PC, but I'll always believe that is what happened.) Meanwhile, "assholes" voting for Sanjaya because he is terrible don't have anyone cancelling them out to vote for the contestants that don't create any passion to vote for them.

There is no way Sanjaya will win, but he's definitely the horrible one who benefits from the format. I don't think they should change the voting process, either, because voting for a favorite is, theoretically, a reflection of whose CD people would buy.

To be fair, they created this monster with some of their selection criteria. They've as much as admitted in the past that some poeple were selected to create "better TV". Combine that with the internet, peoples inate ability to be a-holes, and an increasing desire to watch a train wreck...and you end up with this.

That being said...I don't think that he'll win either. The people that are leaving at this point suck too, not as much as Sanjaya, but they still suck. When you get down to more talented people left he'll leave.

I'll go on the record with perhaps 1-2 more weeks...depending on how psychotic his song choices/performances get.

I will be stunned if he does not mak it to the final four. No one this year is standing out for me (so far) as opposed to the past years. With mediocre talens still there, the likelihood is that Sanjaya will survive until then and as other peoples favorites get eliminated, they will vote AGAINST Sanjaya, ensuring he will not win.

He is top 4 (or at least 5) material and ratings DREAM for FOX.

I would say he likely lasts longer unless his fans get seriously bored for some reason. It's hard to imagine his base, which seems to be pretty strong, not staying with him regardless of performance, while other performers actually have to do well each week to survive. The only people I could imagine consistently beating him at this point are Melinda, Lakisha, and Blake. The rest of them could easily fall given one bad week. I'll be surprised if Sanjaya isn't final 5.

I'm sorry, I just don't buy this Indian fan base arguement. Seriously, if I were Indian I would have hired a hitman to take him out by this point, not voted to keep this embarassment in the thing! This isn't a semi ok guy you could vote for because he has something in relation to you. He's an insult to his kind more like. Like how no shoes dude earlier this season did the show in part because he was sick of the William Hung asian image.

His votes are coming from the joke crowd alone at this point and maybe a few confused teenage girls. And really I don't think anyone should consider them a-holes. How is it their fault the producers put through a kid as far as they did that clearly had no business being there? If it's ok for them to try and manipulate who gets in and who doesn't based on making fun tv, and ok for them to pimp who they want to win every week, then how is it not ok for others to try and manipulate things as well?

Personally I'm just enjoying it at this point. I don't really care, so long as I'm entertained and I am. No, I don't vote for him or anyone else and won't be sad when he's gone.
