Anybody else catch this yet?

Fantastic movie. Strong performances by every single actor in the film. Every single one. Robert Downy Jr was fantastic as a (gasp) drunk cokehead writer. Even Jake Gyllenhall was able to get out of that paper bag that is usually his foe. Terrfic film, LONG, nearly three hours, but they go into detail on how the murders started piling up, and how the police were baffled. They cover all the ground that is in the book, in case you've read it, its nearly page for page, which was nice for me, since I loved the book.

Anthony Edward was great, but knowing how bald he is, the toupe was a distraction.

Donal Logue was fantastic in his role, and at first, I had a hard time placing him, because he doesnt look at all like what he normally looks like.

If you have three hours to spend, check it out!

Not to stomp out your attempt at high level humour, but here's a quick listing of the feature films with Gyllenhaal as a focus character.

October Sky Average iMDb rating: 7.6
Donnie Darko Average iMDb rating: 8.3
Bubble Boy Average iMDb rating: 5.2
The Good Girl Average iMDb rating: 6.7
Highway Average iMDb rating: 5.7
Moonlight Mile Average iMDb rating: 6.8
The Day After Tommorow Average iMDb rating: 6.2
Brokeback Mountain Average iMDb rating: 7.9
Proof Average iMDb rating: 7.0
Jarhead Average iMDb rating: 7.3

That comes out to an average score of 6.87 out of a possible ten. Take out the summer blockbuster and the comedy film and the average goes to 7.16. Then again, those could all just be coincidences. Expect they're not.

(p.s. I saw Zodiac as well. Excellent film. Go see it. I'd write in more depth, but how could I follow up the eloquence of the previous review?)

Wasnt trying to be humorous, aside from October Sky and Brokeback mountain, I dont think he was spectacular in any of those films. But, thats just my own view.

So in other words, he's never been good in anything except for the films that he was? Gotcha.

I agree with the notion that Gyllenhaal's a lot better an actor than most give him credit for, but using IMDb user scores to prove it just doesn't cut it.

To those who say people wouldn't look; they wouldn't be interested; they're too complacent, indifferent and insulated, I can only reply: There is, in one reporter's opinion, considerable evidence against that contention. But even if they are right, what have they got to lose? Because if they are right, and this instrument is good for nothing but to entertain, amuse and insulate, then the tube is flickering now and we will soon see that the whole struggle is lost. This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. One of the best true crime books I've ever read. It's right up there in my top 3 with "Invisible Darkness" and "Auto Focus".

What about box office numbers?
October Sky: $32,481,825 (USA)
Donnie Darko: $1,242,428 (Both USA releases)
Bubble Boy: $5,002,310 (USA)
The Good Girl: $14,015,786 (USA)
Highway: No data. Direct-to-DVD?
Moonlight Mile: $6,835,856 (USA)
The Day After tomorrow: $186,739,919 (USA)
Brokeback Mountain: $83,025,853 (USA)
Proof: $7,524,766 (USA)
Jarhead: $62,647,540 (USA)

9 movies with box office numbers gives a total of $399,516,283 (USA box office only) of 9 movies where he was the focal character. That is an average of $44,390,698.11 a movie.

If you take out the highest (The Day After Tomorrow) and lowest (Donnie Darko)grossing movies, you get a total of $211,533,936 for 7 movies and an average of $30,219,133.71 a movie.

Averaging $30 mil a flick isn't that bad.

As far as great true crime books are concerned, don't forget "Helter Skelter".

While I have to admit I haven't seen a single movie Triple S listed he still fails my test. He absolutely sucked on SNL.

Box office number are also a pretty silly way to judge an actor's quality. Martin Lawrence and the Wayans brothers have made millions.

Well, come on now. SNL hasn't been good in years.

Plus, if we're discrediting movie popularity ratings and box office performance, what's left? Oscar nominations? He's received one of those too.

I'm not saying anyone is mistaking Gyllenhaal for Sydney Poitier, but the ridiculous notion that he cannot act his way out of boxes, paper bags, and the like is crazy.

I would say "but Nic Cage WON an Oscar and he sucks" but then I'd have to hear about how great Matchstick Men was.

He impressed me in the film. Maybe that's the way I should have said it, because in other films, with the exception of October Sky, he's just not done much for me.

Either way, Robert Downy JR OWNS this movie. Its so easy to forget what an absolute joy he can be at times. (especially after suffering through kiss kiss bang bang)

Back to the movie....

I agree with StaggerLee, the movie needed more Downey. Mark Ruffalo was also excellent and worth mentioning. I love films like this. I had high hopes going in and it did not disappoint.

Blasphemy! KKBB was one of the most enjoyable pulp movies I've seen in years. For shame! I'll have to pop in Wonder Boys to forget you said that.

You're the first person I've ever seen hating on KISS KISS. That movie is FANTASTIC.

I read an interview with the director in which he regretted having to remove three great Downey scenes to get the running time down for the final cut. He said they will be on the dvd.

Yeah, this is pretty close and now they have pushed two of the secondary characters into a love angle, eh. I like the Backstrom character, Valentine, Moto and Sgt. Almond. I don't expect this show to make a second season, but it;s okay.
