I thought he was looking at going to Dallas, as well. He could have been playing Dallas against Chicago for a better deal, and the Bears decided they didn't want to compete for his services.

Wow, you've gotta feel bad for Rivera. Are there even any head coaching vacancies left? San Diego, Miami, Dallas, Arizona, Oakland have all filled their head coaching needs. Who's left?
The Wisdom of Homsar: AaAaAaAaAa! I'm the human wedgie!
Next year is going to be a slaughter for all the usual mediocre head coaches who ride the carousel. Between Rivera, who's long been regarded as prime coaching material, and Schottenheimer being available, we've still got Parcells and Cowher sitting on the sidelines. If I'm Tom Coughlin or Romeo Crennel, its Super Bowl or bust, baby!
You believe me, don't you? Please believe what I just said...
"Lovie wants to hire his own guy now (the current LB coach), after being encouraged to take on Chico when Smith was hired ... to give Bears fans a 'feel good' that would counter the nausea that the Monsters of the Midway just hired a (then) unknown guy named Lovie as head coach"
and one from column B -
"GM Ted Phillips (under direction from Chairman of the Board Michael McCaskey) is not about to pay market rate for any non-player other than possibly Smith, and him only because management lost their bet of not extending Smith before this Super Bowl run."
Smart pickup by San Diego. And he might just get that head coaching job with the Chargers someday if Norv Turner falls on his face like we all think he will.

He was around here in DC for a while (Turner), and really did a blah job. Just doesn't seem like the kind of guy who motivates people. His ideas on the offensive side of the ball are good, and if the Defensive Coordinator can keep that side of the ball good and fired up, SD shouldn't do too bad next year.
Hold nothing sacred and you'll never be dissapointed. Especially not this statement.
The loss of Rivera is basically meaningless since he wasn't given any real control over the defense anyhow. As long as Lovie, a Dungy disciple, is in love with that bullshit Tampa-2 defense where you sit back and let any good QB pick you apart drive after drive, there's really no difference with any Def. Coordinator. It's Lovie's defense, and between that scheme decision and the decision to let everything ride on Grossman, it would not surprise me at all to see Lovie gone after the 2007 season. I think there is a certain amount of sentiment that says Lovie and his staff have underacheived the last two years, and if Grossman doesn't drastically improve next season it would not be a shocker to see both of them go away as a package deal out the door.
