The obsession returns...

Excellent cameo by Rob McElhenney. Great guest shot by Zeljko Ivanek. And Ethan!

That was a Dharma logo in that room in Miami with Juliet and her sister at the beginning of the show, right?

Mr. Friendly gets squeamish around blood? Rarely has a TV character lost so much coolness in such a short period of time.

Is it just me, or did Miami Juliet look older (in her face) than present-day Juliet? Something up with that?

The Clockwork Orange room of fun was pretty f'ed up. How is Karl gonna fit in with everybody else?

The casting says the recruiter's name is Richard Alpert but it sure sounded like "Alvar" coming out of Juliet's mouth.

BULLET POINTS

- I would give cash money to see Kal Penn and Rob McElhenney out-awesome each other.

- Miami Juliet looked as if she herself were on drugs.

- His name is Alpert? I thought they were shouting out to The Office.

I just knew with the Ethan cameo at the beginning that they were doing the same fake-out with Juliet that they did in the season premiere. Still, the fact that they were in Miami was surprising.

I'm also surprised at how blatant it was that Juliet's ex-husband would get hit by a bus.

Hopefully this marks the end of the Others-Jack-Kate-Sawyer intensive arc, and we can get back to checking in on the rest of the cast.

I'll admit - knowing that Juliet has been on the island three years, I'm curious about what happened with her sister. Surely, they wouldn't have kept her there during her sister's childbirth, especially given that she helped bring about the pregnancy. I fully expected to see the numbers or a DHARMA logo on the medicine that Juliet was injecting into her sister. I'm sorta glad I didn't.

Did anyone else catch what looked like the footage of DeGroot in the goggles from the Orientation video at the end of Carl's brainwashing footage?

I like that Tom is afraid of blood. I think its fun to look back at the earlier episodes when he was bluffing everyone with the beard and think about how much of a wuss he really is. My only gripe is that for someone who's afraid of blood, he sure does hang around with a bunch of trigger happy people.

I also liked the touch of Jack managing to actually screw up the surgery. Even though he fixed it (quite heavy-handedly, as Kate was effectively narrating), that was a fun moment.

You believe me, don't you?
Please believe what I just said...

Possible real world reference....Juliet's "three years, two months, X days" on the island means she's been there since roughly around Sept. 11, which is kind of creepy.

I'm glad to have LOST back to discuss obsessively every week. I'm also really glad that the show won't be so segmented between the Others' island and Lost Island any more, since the original castaways (i.e. Sayid, Sun, Claire, etc.) were getting the shaft for screentime.

I don't know what is more disquieting -- the fact that the rest of the statue is missing, or that it has four toes.

It's working now, except the pictures won't load. There's a login screen under "Projects" and executive bios for Alpert, Juliet, and DOCTOR Ethan Rom.

Mittelos=Lost Time??? OF COURSE!

Oh, and as for the show itself? I just don't care anymore. It's not actively bad, it's just strayed so far from what I originally liked about it.

I wasn't really feeling this show like I thought I should be. It was probably due to the long layoff, at least I hope it was.

The brainwashing twist was interesting. How many other people do they have in the other rooms there?

I kind of wonder if they are setting up a huge heel turn by Jack.

Loved Sawyer busting out "Wookiee prisoner gag". Sawyer is such a Star Wars geek. They should have a flashback episode of him camped out to see Episode 1, doling out witty nicknames for everyone else in line.

Miami Juliet was certainly frumpier looking than Island Juliet. My first impression was that she was wearing a maternity top.

Wasn't much a sales pitch that the Suddenly Susan Photographer was putting on for her to join them in "Portland". Hard to take him seriously at that point. After evil hubby got creamed by the bus (and since we are all so used to seeing corpses on CSI - shouldn't he have looked a hell of a lot worse on the table ?) she had to know how serious they were despite their protestations.

Jack is an idiot. I hope he gets locked in the Clockwork Orange room.

Danny needed to die. I just wish Sawyer had been the one to do it. Juliet should know better than to believe anything Ben says.

Glad to see they are headed back to the rest of the cast. Much like the rest of the viewers, I am really sick of the whole other island story arc.

15 episodes to go. Is it Wednesday yet ?

Suddenly Susan Photographer? Interesting. The moment I saw Nestor Carbonell, I pointed and yelled, "It's Batmanuel!"

He played Batmanuel on The Tick.

Very annoying episode.
Sure, stuff happened but again it added another layer of WTF is really going on.
Juliet changed from face to heel a few times in this one episode.
She wanted Ben dead and ordered Kate & Sawyer to be shot, only to turn at the idea of being released herself.
Her flashbacks were interesting.

And so she found a way to impregnate pretty much anyone.
Made me think of Sun right away.

And WTF is with the chick. She's supposed to be Russeau's daughter? Yet they talk about her father?

So plenty of cool new stuff happening, but I too hope they will do some "meanwhile..back in the camp" episodes now.
I'm not sick of the other island, but I want things to somehow tie in to Hurley's numbers, or Locke's faith crises, etc.

*sigh* Why bother?

Not only are they getting actors from Oz, but also actresses from another HBO show, Deadwood. Kim Dickens, Paula Malcomson and now Robin Weigert have made cameos.

Tom, or Mr. Friendly, really seemed to be trying to be sociable with Jack despite the fact he kept threatening to harm his boss.

I was thinking about this very thing. Alex is Rousseau's daughter, taken from her when she was a baby (so we've been told). If Ben was the one that took her, than only people who were there 16+ years ago would know that it probably isn't his daughter. If he was her father, surely Rousseau would have recognized him when she caught him in the trap as Henry Gale. Then again, maybe he raised her and is just recognized as her "dad"...

The stewardess from the tail section that disappeared suddenly and reappeared in front of Jack...she must be getting doses of whatever Karl was having. I am really interesting in seeing what kind of information about everything he lays on the main group, unless he won't tell them anything except, "we're the good guys!"

See I know more than one Juliette in the real world.

< speculative assertion> Juliette's father was a very intelligent, controlling, manipulative, megalomaniac-type. So, when she & her brains got to grad school, she fell immediately for the biggest megalomaniac in her department -- daddy-seeking (not like that's a recurring theme in Lost). Because he can, he's in the business of collecting hot, brainy women. He actually had to go so far as to marry Juliette in order to really "get" her. Once the conquest is done, he can divorce her & dangle her along as part of his staff/harem. OK, so in a way it's very empowering for her to see to his getting hit by a bus. However, because she's really not resolved anything in her relationships with megalomaniacs, what does she do but fall for the most intelligent, controlling, manipulative, megalomaniac-type in the Dharma Initiative -- that'd be Ben.

Soooo, yeah, she was very much beaten down & trapped by the professor-asshole, hence she looks bedraggled & prematurely old. That was in the "I'm not a leader" phase. She "causes" his death, gets free, starts to feel powerful, etc. Then she runs into Ben. He plays exactly the same emotional games, but on a level waaaay above what she was accustomed to. So it took her a while to realise that he was indeed running exactly the same "con" on her, just in a much more sophisticated way. At least with Ben, with him being so much more superior & confident at the game, she can actually wield some power -- just not quite enough to get away from Ben. But certainly enough to be a very effective lieutenant for Ben. That denial of leadership thing* that she evinced earlier, particularly during the interview, has considerably diminished -- while Ben's out, she's clearly running the show.
< /speculative assertion>

So, they snarf Alex from Rousseau at a very young age. (Fun coinky-dink that Rousseau was also a scientist, genetically speaking.) What else are they going to do with Alex? Somebody's going to raise her as their own, & if she's at all promising, that'll be Ben.

Anybody else find prefessor-guy getting slammed by the bus to be reminiscent of Michael getting slammed by the taxi?

Meanwhile, in the preceeding "Lost Survivor Guide", they totally blew off the Tailies, didn't they? I'm still cranky that such a significant chunk of season 2 ended up being totally irrelevant & throwaway. (Bernard is the only surviving Tailie, right?)

* Hasn't Jack also always had this undercurrent of "I'm in charge" / "No, I'm not the leader" ? Certainly not a trait taught in med school.

Unless you count that stewardess who you know is going to show back up sooner or later.

And they always cut out all the dead characters in the flashback episodes - if they use people who aren't still in the cast, I think they have to pay them a guest appearance fee and that would eliminate the point of the super-cheap recap episodes. Thus, the story of the show is somehow told without mentioning Michael, Walt, Ana Lucia, Libby, Mr. Eko, Shannon or Boone.

If the purpose of the Survival Guide was to act as a Cole's Notes version of the series for new viewers, it makes sense not to include the dead characters. Lost is a complicated enough show as it is without having to go over every specific detail of the first 2.25 seasons. Besides, aside from Michael, Walt and arguably Eko, none of the others really added a whole lot to the grand scheme of the plot anyway. For example, Sayid's role in the recap was all about "his quest for Nadia," and thus apparently his relationship with Shannon has been totally excised (which makes sense since it made no sense anyway).

I am trying to remember why Jack was in a Kate/Sawyer-type outside cage, but he was, and the stewardess saw him. He recognized her, and she was friggin spacey, like she had the same brainwashing activity that Karl had....

I get what you mean, but don't they have to (HAVE TO) at some point go back and show us how Libby got to be in the same mental institution that Hugo was in? That, to me, seemed like a big thing to leave untouched, dead Libby or not...

This week's Entertainment Weekly actually addresses that point in their cover article. The creators admit that she is a part of thee story that they will have to come back to during another flashback this season. Too bad the island can't bring her back to life.
