Well, at 12-33 right now, the Celtics are in no danger of surpassing their all-time worst record of 15-67 in the 1996-97 season (a year that still didn't net them Tim Duncan because the Spurs had a great one-year hell of their own), but with their 14th straight loss, the Celtics have set a new franchise mark for their longest-ever losing streak.

Have to say the Celtics' slide happened awfully fast in basketball terms, considering they were in the 2002 Eastern Conference Finals and pushed the Pacers to the limit in a seven-game first-round series as recently as '05.

This year C's situation has more in common with the 97 Spurs than the C's 97 team, as Pierce has missed about 25 games, guys like West and Szcerbiak have missed games due to injuries, and Allen blow's out his knee after playing the best basketball of his career. The 97 team had guys like Todd Day, Brett Szabo, and Alton Lister.

Only bright side is that they have a shot at Oden or Durant. Even if they don't get the #1 or 2 pick, they still should end up in the 3-5 range. Combine that with Ratliff's expiring deal and they might have a shot to trade for a player in the offseason. Only bad thing is that Rivers might still be coaching this team. Speaking of the 05 series against Indy, there's no way the C's should've lost that. Rivers should've been fired after that embarrasment.

'02 50 wins and Game 6 of the Conference Finals with a chance to win Game 4 up 2-1 and with a lead in Game 6 at home. '03 win in the 1st round and midway through the 2nd round hire Danny Ainge who then rips the team he inherits as they get swept, as Ainge talks about how Conference Finals are not the goal, but Championships are the goal. After trading for one of the worst contracts in basketball by getting Raef LaFrentz, they finally are able to get out of it by getting the point guard of Ainge's dreams, Sebastian Telfair, who is now the #3 point guard and fading fast. Danny Ainge has destroyed the franchise by getting rid of a coach who understood defense and getting a coach who now has had double digit losing streaks with 2 franchises and has never won a playoff series. Everyone always knew Ainge was bitter about being traded for Kleine and Pinkney in '89, they never should have let him have the opportunity to destroy the franchise from within.
Ownership calls themselves Green 17: The way things are going, the Green might get 17 wins this year.

All good points on Ainge (but saying he intentionally messing up the C's because of being traded is hyperbole to the Nth degree), but let's not let the previous coach/GM off the hook totally. The previous GM (Wallace) traded away Joe Johnson and a 02 1st rounder for Delk/Rogers. In the offseason, the prevoius owner (Gaston) didn't want to re-sign Rogers for his price, so they lost him to NJ as a free agent. Wallace panics and trades for Vin Baker (whos contract makes Raef's look good by comparison). The day that trade was made was when the ECF team got broken up. And the pick that was sent away in the 02 draft, Phoenix used it to take Casey Jacobsen (who's career is only known for being asked by Craig Sager in the post draft interview if his wife has a sister). Granted, I'm not missing the Jacobsen era in Boston but Tayshoun Prince was taken with the very next pick, and Nenad Kristic and Carlos Boozer were still available then too.

As for Obrien, he was the classic "right guy, right place, right time" when he came in after Pitino. His next coaching job he held for 1 year and hasn't had another one since. And going back to the Johnson trade, supposedly Phoenix wanted him or Kedrick Brown, and OBrien convinced Wallace to send Johnson instead of Kedrick, as Obie though Brown would turn out to be the better pro. As for the 03 run into the 2nd round, I firmly believe that if Indy had anyone else besides Isiah Thomas coaching them then, Pacers win that series. Against NJ in the 2nd round they were swept, K-Mart makes Walker his personal bitch, and Walker takes his frustrations out on a fan at the Fleet Center. That team deserved to be ripped.

Right now, Ainges only saving grace with me is that he's drafted well for the most part for where in the draft he was picking (Jefferson, Gomes, Rondo, West, Allen were all mid-1st round picks or lower). Doc though, like I said, he should've been fired after blowing the 05 series to Indy. If the C's are fortunate to end up with Oden or Durant, I don't want Doc anywhere near those guys unless he's doing TV commentary for a C's game that's being shown on ABC.

Bill Simmons has a column up now about fantanking, which is basically rooting for your team to lose so that they can get better draft position. He's been fantanking the Celtics ever since Pierce got hurt.

The Ainge destroying from within due to Red trading him was hyperbole, but, it is a good explanation for the current 'plan'.
On the Joe Johnson trade: I thought at the time that I would rather have traded Brown instead of Johnson, as Johnson was in the rotation. However, I still make that trade. Feb 2002, I want the chance to make a run after being out of the playoffs for 7 years. Boston doesn't beat Philly in Round 1 without Rodgers, and they don't beat Detroit in Round 2 without Delk. 2-1 Series lead and Pierce going to the line in the last 20 seconds with a chance to take a commanding 3-1 lead. I'd sign for that in blood. They probably lose 4-1 to the Lakers or Kings (if Vlade could hit a free throw), but, you take a shot of getting to the Finals when it is there.
Ainge has done a decent job drafting, but so has Isiah Thomas. Ainge has done a putrid job of evaluating NBA talent though. Jiri Welsch is an All Star point guard that just needs the opportunity. If they had played that season out with Walker, they might have been decent, at worst they would have had Walker's max contract off the books rather than getting an extra 5+ years of Raef 'he can shoot and block shots' Lafrentz. Ricky Davis for Wally hasn't exactly lit the world on fire. Maybe Danny would be better as a scout of college games rather than as a NBA GM.
As for Doc: I was vehemently against hiring him in the first place, and he has lived down to the expectations I had for him.
Perfect world they get Oden and then fire the whole front office/coaching star and start over, in a similar way to Red starting the franchise over after the Rowe/Wicks days hiring Fitch when Bird came to town.

Simmons is right. I am a Celtics' homer and am actively cheering for them to lose. They have some nice young players, but Paul Pierce should take his sweet time coming back. I have watched most of their games this season, and they play just well enough to stay close in most games. I like Delonte West, Gerald Green, Al Jefferson and a couple others going forward, but you Pierce, Oden or Durant and another free agent or trade and they might be in business quicker than you think.

I agreed with the Johnson trade like you (but wished they had sent out Brown instead). Biggest mistake (outside of Wallace totally blowing the 2001 draft) was not keeping the 02 ECF team together. The blame there lies with the previous GM and owner.

Perfect world for me is that they get Oden or Durant and dump Doc. As for a coach, I wouldn't mind seeing Ainge take over. Let him coach the guys he picked like Dolan did with Isiah. Difference is, Ainge did a pretty good coaching job out in Phoenix when he was coaching there. Whereas Isiah has proven to be horrible at all levels of management in his post playing career.

Am I wrong in thinking that, if the Celtics do end up with one of the top two picks, they should package the pick with Theo's contract and Telfair and send the whole lot on over to Minnesota for KG? I've been ostracized on other boards for even suggesting that we trade Oden, but I think it would be worth it just to have Garnett and Pierce playing side by side (with Big Al improving along the way).

Maybe in five-ten years I would be saying "Aw damn, why did we trade that guy?" ... but in the next two-three years, I have no doubt that a KG/Truth combo would at least make us perennial contenders in the Eastern Conference Finals. AT LEAST.

Worst. Idea. Ever.

If you guys ended up with the #1 or #2 pick, you'd actually give it away for KG? Not that KG isnt great, but how long does he have left? What do you do after that, start all over again? It makes waay more sense to have your high pick play along side Pierce, then build around them.

Frosty is right. Kevin Durant with Pierce, Delonte West, Gerald Green and Al Jefferson. Good times.

We just need Doc to keep coaching them this season and stumble back into broadcasting for next season. I don't care who coaches next season, as long as Doc doesn't.
