A horrendous Best Picture slate, but there are some interesting and richly deserved nominations floating around. Greengrass, Wahlberg, Jackie Earle Haley...and PAN'S LABYRINTH getting a good number of nods makes me happy.
To those who say people wouldn't look; they wouldn't be interested; they're too complacent, indifferent and insulated, I can only reply: There is, in one reporter's opinion, considerable evidence against that contention. But even if they are right, what have they got to lose? Because if they are right, and this instrument is good for nothing but to entertain, amuse and insulate, then the tube is flickering now and we will soon see that the whole struggle is lost. This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise it is merely wires, and lights, in a box.-Edward R. Murrow
Borat might win an Oscar....ohhhhhh happy days...kind of a lackluster field over all, and I really wish one day, they'd find some new females to put in the best actress nod....Dench, Streep, and Blanchett (only a supporting nod) always seem to be there.
This list basically shows me one thing, I didn't watch shit in '06.
Co-Winner of the 2006 Time Magazine Person of the Year Award
-Everyone assuming that The Departed was a front-runner, leading to DiCapiro's better performance being snubbed and f'n JACK NICHOLSON being snubbed altogether. -United 93 getting a major nomination, just not the one I expected. -Unexpectedly, Letters from Iwo Jima getting a few noms despite being an also-ran at the Globes (if that). -Pan's Labrynth managing to squeeze out a few major noms. -Borat getting something.
No major front-runner (no film has more than 5 or 6 nominations) in a year where outside of a few films (The Departed, for one), there was no major splash made.
I'm pretty much at peace with everything (it's a pretty weak year, and I wasn't expecting my fave movie, Prestige, to get anything major), but I'm very surprised "Stranger Than Fiction" didn't get a screenplay nod.
Abigail Breslin's nomination makes me very very happy. I know she has no chance of winning, but she deserved to be recognized. I wish Steve Carrell had gotten the nod over Alan Arkin, but I'm just glad to see Little Miss Sunshine get noticed as much as it did.
LMS is such a middle-of-the-road film. Its funny and all, but shallower than my toilet. I hate that it's been nominated for best picture when films like UNITED 93, PAN'S LABYRINTH, THE FOUNTAIN, CHILDREN OF MEN, and LITTLE CHILDREN are shut out.

I think the problem with the Departed's cast is that Damon, Leo and Jack were all leads, and it was hard to pick one over the other or to deliniate one to the supporting category. The one that did get in (Marky Mark) was clearly a supporting role, so there was no confusion over where the ballots were cast. This also happened to Jack in 1989 with Batman, as some voted him for Best Actor and others voted him for Best Supporting, and it ended up splitting the vote and he was nominated for neither.
I still have loads to see of the 'other' major films (Dreamgirls, Little Children, United 93, Pan's Labyrinth, Notes on a Scandal, Volver), but of Best Picture nominess I've seen, the Departed is by far the best. This is a weird year, as there doesn't seem to be any real favourite for Best Picture.
Packman: The reason they keep nominating Dench and Streep is because they're two of the best actresses of all time. Meryl Streep deserves a nomination for almost anything she appears in.
I don't know what is more disquieting -- the fact that the rest of the statue is missing, or that it has four toes.

I'd rather see something immensely enjoyable if not utterly profound like LMS get nominated than something embarrassingly faux sagacious like Crash. Not that I'm comparing any of the ones you listed to Crash, having not seen them. So I guess I have no real value judgment to make.
I do realize this is the Best Picture category and not Our Fave Movie '06, and I'm not the kind of guy who thinks Spider-Man 2 should've been nominated because it was the most fun or what have you.
A group of us get together every year and see all the nominated films (as many as we can) and then we cast our votes. We even have a plaque... yes, very geeky... This year is going to be tough.
Very glad Marky mark got a nod for The Departed. Pan's Labyrinth deserves all it's nods and then some.
Originally posted by Matt TrackerI can't believe Matt Damon got nothing for The Departed. He owned the film.
I dunno, I felt like he just came up a little short in that movie and didn't quite pull it off.
He was, however, perfect in "The Good Shepherd". Did that film miss a certain deadline, cuz it can't not be nominated.
Wow, I'm in total disagreement. Good Shepherd was the most disappointing movie I saw all year, when you consider the talent involved. That was the worst performance I've ever seen Damon give, and I think Damon is one of the most underrated actors in Hollywod. I thought he was superb in Departed and easily deserving of an Oscar bid.

Oh, I'm in absolute agreement. As much as I don't see LMS as a "Best Film" contender, it was immensely enjoyable and well-made, and certainly a better film than the manipulative and trite CRASH. But this year was a banner year for small, outside-the-box movies that weren't only smart and thought-provoking, but also entertaining. Example: if PAN'S LABYRINTH had been in English, it would have opened on 1000+ screens and made Best Picture and Best Director. And CHILDREN OF MEN is one of the most breathless, gripping, inventively directed and intelligent movies of the past decade, let alone 2006.
In case anyone can't tell, I'd HIGHLY recommend any of the five films I named in my last post. :)

I have not seen a single one of these movies. Not even the animated movies, or the ones nominated for sound or special effects or makeup. Not one. Yikes.
