So I've had WWE 24/7 since late August. Like alot of folks, I've been recording some of the stuff I dig. However, this weekened I'm suddenly getting "copyrighted material. cannot record" when I try to record anything.
I thought it was just my DVD recorder, but I tried a different one and got the same message. It's possible to record via a VCR, but it returns a horrible picture quality. Red lines throughout, or else a b/w image with color fading in and out.
Anyone else having similar problems? I can see why WWE would include protection. I mean, I've had absolutely zero interest in their DVD releases since I've subscribed to 24/7. Just thought some of yuz might wanna' know.
It sounds like they may have added Macrovision protection - the stuff you get when you try to run a DVD player though a VCR.
This is probably a good move on their part.
Discussions of how to circumvent this are not appropriate for this site. Sorry! Any convesation in this thread needs to be about confirming or denying that this is copy protected, and not how to get around it.
I think it's interesting that they're able to send out Macrovision stuff through a cable box (I use Comcast). I've always thought "if I can get it on my TV, I can record it". I remember being scared, back in 1988, that I'd be unable to record WrestleMania IV, since it was a PPV event.
Also, my 24/7 selection has seriously decreased over the past two weeks or so. I have maybe six selections available right now. I tried to watch the latest edition of "Prime Time Wrestling" and they tried to charge me 8.99 for that.
Called up Comcast to report the error (SRM-2009) and got two different answers. First guy sent a signal and reset my box. I had to wait half an hour for everything to download. Okay.. but still had the same problem. Called back and a different ding dong told me that not every item under WWE 24/7 is part of the monthly subscription. After 30 minutes of holding, this operator told me that she'd waive the 8.99 fee just this once. She said it's always been this way and I've just never selected a program with an additional fee.
I know Guru Zim is (or maybe was) a Comcast employee and usually knows what he's talking about. I don't mean to slam your co-workers, but dang, neither person I dealt with today had a clue what my problem was.
Has anyone else only been getting the first minute of programming from time to time? It's happened to me twice - both times with shows I really wanted to watch, too. (Survivor Series 1997 and the latest Legends roundtable about Andre the Giant and The Iron Sheik.) Seems to be less content available at once lately, too. It's still worth it for the recent PPVs alone, but it's gone way downhill in the six months or so I've subscribed. Really frustrating.
Vote NOW in the 2006 Fuzzies, or else you hate America.
Comcast finishes its transition of Adelphia in April , dont know about TWC
Oh and estragand, ignore the fee that is stated when ordering events through WWE 24/7, those are standalone fees for non subscribers, not additional fees.

Because they can. Because they might be available to buy someday. Because if you copy them with a DVR or DVD recorder, you can easily transfer them to a format appropriate for thieving off the Internet.
I seem to be lucky here - lots of content on 24/7, no billing errors, and last I checked, I could still record things (onto videotape, anyway). It's pretty much the only channel I watch anymore.
Well, I said it SOUNDS like Macrovision. I've never seen what you are talking about personally, and I haven't worked for a cable company since 2005. It wasn't Comcast... it was either Time Warner or Cox Communications - I never did really spell that out I'm not going to clarify it for you now, either.
So, I can't confirm it is Macrovision, and I'm definitely not an expert here. Maybe one of my former co-workers is still trolling the board and will give me a heads-up.
Update to my lil' adventure: it sounds like it's not an error and it's spreading. Tonight, I found out that I'm unable to record ANY Comcast OnDemand programs. Which sucks, because Adult Swim is showing some old Gigantor episodes, exclusively through OnDemand.
Called Comcast and acted dumb. They told me that you're not allowed to record any OnDemand features. "Live" TV-- no problem. But because OnDemand isn't live and they have control over it, they've locked down all the programs. Again, this was startling, because I've been recording OnDemand shows since the service first popped up in mid 2004. But as of this weekend, recording has become impossible. So it's not WWE doing this....it's Comcast.
Since mid-December, Comcast's OnDemand has been promoting "new movies, the same day as the DVD release". I think that's the bigger reason why they've suddenly added copyright protection.
