We took IJ to see Happy Feet yesterday, and after ten minutes I was hating it. The gimmick is that the penguins all have a "heart song" except the one penguin who dances instead, and I was REALLY not liking it and wishing we had gone to see Night at the Museum instead. To my surprise, I ended up liking the movie by the end. Robin Williams' characters are pretty good, and there is some pretty amazing animation between the tap-dancing choreography and the sheer number of penguins they showed, and there are some pretty good grown-up jokes in there.

The two main criticisms I'd heard about the movie beforehand were (1) the "humans are bad"-message is very strong, and (2) that the main character (Mumble) is gay. I'd say the former is pretty accurate but they tried to kind of balance it out at the end, but the latter is idiotic and stupid.

IJ, of course, LOVED it and by the end of the film was dancing around with the final musical number. I'm sure I'll be sick of the DVD about fourteen seconds after we buy it.

Me and the nephews (3 and 5) have seen them both over the holiday period, and we all seemed to enjoy Night at the Museum a lot more.
I had two problems with Happy Feet:

1. The whole heart song thing seemed pathetic, even to the point where Lewis (the 5 year old) was questioning the logic of it.

2. I now won't be able to get any of the songs out of my head for about 6 weeks, just in time for the DVD release.

I didn't really catch most of the grown up jokes in there but, in Happy Feet's defence, that could be down to the fact that I had to listen to a kid screaming for an hour.

Night at the Museum is an excellent film. I thought the cast was excellent, the CGI looked very sharp and the characters were spot on. The kids said they liked it because of the Dino dog (watch the film) and they probably learnt something too. After watching Click, thats now my 2 most hated actors that have come out with really good films, lets hope Seagal's next film bombs or I'll run out of people to hate.

We got the CD for the minivan on the way to the movie last month. It hasn't been out of the CD player since. The kids love it. The parents not so much. The Prince song is good. Hugh Jackman doing "Heartbreak Hotel" is okay, but Nicole Kidman and Brittany Murphy singing (the latter butchering "Somebody to Love") is abysmal. Like I said, the kids love it. Shoot me.

Took the 2 little dunkettes - they dismissed the whole heart song angle - loved the dancing - loved the music - have been imitating Robin Williams lillte penguin non-stop ever since.

Once we got home, they made me download & burn the album to cd's for their rooms and for Mrs. Dunk's car. I have to admit that I actually like the Jason Mraz & Chrissie Hynde "Joker Mash-up" and Robin Williams Spanish version of "My Way".

Like JJD - I dread the release of the DVD......

.....It was not what I was expecting. That's the best way I can put it.

Penguins are my favorite animal, so I enjoyed the movie for that reason alone. But I was expecting a movie made just for kids, and this actually seemed to be a more grown-up movie in terms of storylines, conversations, etc. Just didn't click with me.

I guess that I'm just a romantic sap, but I TOTALLY bought the heart-song deal.

I also liked the fact that the family heartson "kiss" helped explain Mumble's dancing since the song has incorporated into it the line "Think I gotta dance now" (which the movie doesn't reveal until the third act, but if you know the song you can see it coming.)

The big criticism of the film is that the solution to the penguin's problem is a little too easy, quick and fantastical, but then again it's not any more ridiculous than a spider who can spell.

(My big pet peeve about Charlotte's Web is that every freaks out over the pig and ignores the spider. Which is completely missing the point.)

Of course, I'm a weirdo who has no kids and goes to see animated films anyway.

(Would you believe that I am scouting future purcahses for my nephew and nieces?)

Nice try but that never works. You either take them with you or don't go at all, there's like rules or something about that :)

THANK YOU! I brought this up with my wife and she just rolled her eyes. *I* would have been having a fit over a spider that can spell rather than a pig that can.... What does he do anyways?! Having said all that, I still like the story....

In the interest of staying on topic: I haven't seen Happy Feet and with luck I won't. I'm a sucker for most things with Robin Williams in them, but the story looks reaaaaally thin. My kids haven't shown any interest in seeing it, so maybe I've dodged the bullet. Whew.

You sure I don't get a pass for the fact that they live in Toronto and I live in Montreal?

What if we go to the movie at the same time but in different cities?

(Good thing that I'm not worried about looking like a dweeb.)

100% agree. As soon as they said he was doing John Lennon, I thought, "Please don't let it be Imagine." Horrid. IMO. I liked David Hernandez's performance the best. That was fantastic.
