Why do I still have this nagging feeling that Cleveland will win on Sunday and blow that #3 draft position? The only thing that gives me hope is that they really laid a turd against the Bucs, and I thought the game would at least be competitive. That and Dorsey starting should really guarantee a clunker. I half-expected a crappy year, but geez this was bad.
Guess I'm rooting for the Bolts, Pats, and Bears in the playoffs this year.
When there's multi-way ties, the first move is to break any ties in division first. Panthers and Falcons are both in the South, where they split the head to head. Carolina finishes with a better division record with a win, so Atlanta's gone.
Giants 8-8 Packers 8-8 Panthers 8-8 Rams 8-8
All these teams haven't played each other, so that's out. Next is Confrence record, and with wins, the Giants and the Packers move to 7-5, while the Panthers, Rams (and Atlanta, if Carolina were to lose) are only 6-6. They're gone.
Giants 8-8 (7-5) Packers 8-8 (7-5)
Since we've dropped two teams, you're supposed to jump back to the first tiebreaker, but again, these two teams haven't played and they still have the same confrence record. The next tiebreaker is common games record. If they're both played at least 4 games against the same teams, the team with the better record advances. This one doens't seem to work often, because teams with like enough schedules to reach the requirement usually have also played each other and decided it on the field, but it actually works out here.
Giants wk2: W vs Phi wk3: L vs Sea wk10: L vs Chi wk15: L vs Phi wk16: L vs NO 1-4
Packers wk1: L vs Chi wk2: L vs NO wk4: L vs Phi wk12: L vs Sea wk17: W vs Chi 1-4
Tied again. The next tie breaker is Strength Of Victory, comparing the opponents each team has faced.
The Giants have/will beat Philadelphia 9-6 Washington 5-10 Atlanta 7-8 Dallas 9-6 Tampa Bay 4-11 Houston 5-10 Carolina 7-8 Washington 5-10 Total: 51-69
The Packers have/will beat Detroit 2-13 Miami 6-9 Arizona 5-10 Minnesota 6-9 San Fran 6-9 Detroit 2-13 Minnesota 6-9 Chicago 13-2 Total: 46-74
NFL.com and other places like to list this as the win percentage, but since these records are going to be over the same amount of games, it's a lot easier to express it simply in wins. The Packers beating the Bears while the Giants beat the Redskins will allow Green Bay to close the gap a lot, but they'd still be five wins behind, and would have to make up those five wins plus account for any other wins by teams the Giants have beat. How could they do that?
wk17 schedule Atlanta (NYG) vs Philadelphia (NYG) - win for the Giants either way (+6) Tampa Bay (NYG) vs Seattle Houston (NYG) vs Cleveland Carolina (NYG) vs New Orleans
Dallas (NYG) vs Detroit (GB*2) - if Dallas wins, Packers can't win even if everything goes ther way
Minnesota (GB*2) vs St. Louis Arizona (GB) vs San Diego Miami (GB) vs Indianapolis San Francisco (GB) vs Denver
If everything goes the Packers way, and that's going to require some good teams not to bother playing their top guys this weekend or some major upsets, they could pick up 7 wins. NYG will realistically start the week with a 6 win advantage, since Eagles/Falcons became a win for them after they beat both of them. If the Giants reach a 8 win advantage, the Packers can't catch them.
In simplier terms:
the Giants clinch SoV with a Dallas WIN or a St. Louis WIN or a Tampa WIN and a Houston WIN or a Tampa WIN and a Carolina WIN or a Houston WIN and a Carolina WIN or a San Diego WIN and a Indianapolis WIN or a San Diego WIN and a Denver WIN or a Denver WIN and a Indianpolis WIN
That's a lot of outs. Green Bay's a bit more wordier
the Packers clinch SOV with a Seattle WIN and a Cleveland WIN and a New Orleans WIN and a Detroit WIN and a Minnesota WIN and an Arizona WIN and a Miami WIN and a San Francisco WIN
That's 8 wins. If all games were coin tosses, that's a 1/256 shot of happening, and the coin should actually be weighed against the Packers in all those AFC games (at least until we know who's taking the week off.) There's one more scenario, but it's a bit confusing
SOV is TIED with a Tampa Bay WIN and a Cleveland WIN and a New Orleans WIN and a Detroit WIN and a Minnesota WIN and an Arizona WIN and a Miami WIN and a San Francisco WIN (a) or a Seattle WIN and a Houston WIN and a New Orleans WIN and a Detroit WIN and a Minnesota WIN and an Arizona WIN and a Miami WIN and a San Francisco WIN (b) or a Seattle WIN and a Cleveland WIN and a Carolina WIN and a Detroit WIN and a Minnesota WIN and an Arizona WIN and a Miami WIN and a San Francisco WIN (c) or a Seattle WIN and a Cleveland WIN and a New Orleans WIN and a Detroit WIN and a Minnesota WIN and a San Diego WIN and a Miami WIN and a San Francisco WIN (d) or a Seattle WIN and a Cleveland WIN and a New Orleans WIN and a Detroit WIN and a Minnesota WIN and an Arizona WIN and a Indianapolis WIN and a San Francisco WIN (e) or a Seattle WIN and a Cleveland WIN and a New Orleans WIN and a Detroit WIN and a Minnesota WIN and an Arizona WIN and a Miami WIN and a Denver WIN (f)
I hope your head isn't spinning too much. These would all be opponent win ties - the Giants win 1 and the Packers win 7 to tie at 53, or the Giants win 0 and the Packers win 6 to tie at 52. These have a 6/256 chance. If any of these do happen, the tie advances on to one more tiebreaker, strength of schedule. And there, I stop (mostly because I spent an hour on doing it, and realized the way I was doing it, it'd take me the rest of the week to figure it out.)
Anyway, the bottom line is the Packers have a very small chance of pulling it if both them and the Giants win. It's possible, but very unlikely and certainly will be known by the time they hit the field on Sunday night. The important game is Giants/Redskins...and it's only on NFL Network.
Cubs, that's awesome. Since you went there, let me also add that it IS mathematically possible for the Raiders to "overtake" the Lions for the #1 pick, even if they both lose and are tied at 2-14. The first real dominos are for Minnesota to lose and Kansas City to win.

The Giant Quitters aren't going to win on Saturday. Even though they are the team without the tie-breakers, I'd give the Rams the edge at this point, as the Vikings are playing a QB who makes Brooks Bollinger look like an All-Pro, while the Falcons, Panthers and Packers are playing real NFL teams and the Giants have quit on the season. Plus, the Rams are 2 last second field goals against the Seahawks away from having the West division clinched and possibly an outside shot at the 2 seed. I'm just scared the Giants are going to get in at 7-9 and that will provide justification to extend Coughlin. And, I'm surprised they made Packers/Bears the late game on New Years Eve, as I was expecting Falcon/Eagles, since both teams could potentially need the game at that point, and the Eagles are pretty much guaranteed needing the game unless the Cowboys had lost earlier in the day. However, I guess safety considerations must have overridden that idea, as the crowd in Philly on that night could have brought a new definition to the term evil. And, I'm looking at the game times right now: Have the NFL and the networks finally come to their senses and made the last week of the season a double double header week?

Gee, thanks NFL. Now all those nice Bears fans will get an extra 7 hours of drinking time before I get to make my first ever trip to Soldier Field. I expect a warm welcome.
I'll post any exciting details if I get home on New Year's Day!
I'd give the edge to the Packers here. The Giants HAVE quit on the season and I don't think they'll suddenly start playing hard this weekend. The only one who will be playing to win will be Tiki Barber, since this is his last hurrah. Everyone else will either coast or tank, since a loss will more than likely cost Tom Coughlin his job.
And I didn't think ANYONE gave the Eagles any kind of realistic shot after Donovan McNabb went down. And yet here's Jeff Garcia, of all guys, leading them into the playoffs with, what is currently, a 4-game winning streak
The vibe out of Chicago is the starting Bears are only playing a half. It's early in the week so that could change, but they've also been calling plays not to because they thought they were the best plays to call, but to show as many different looks as possible to confuse people who scout them. It's weird.
And, I'm surprised they made Packers/Bears the late game on New Years Eve, as I was expecting Falcon/Eagles, since both teams could potentially need the game at that point, and the Eagles are pretty much guaranteed needing the game unless the Cowboys had lost earlier in the day.
Eagles are in regardless, and the Falcons have the least shot of any of the NFC teams, so that was enough to drop it down.
The biggest games, as far as people just making it in, are
(NFC) 1) NYG vs WAS - NFL 2) GB vs CHI - NBC 3) CAR vs NO 4) ATL vs PHI 5) STL vs MIN
(AFC) 1) NYJ vs OAK 2) CIN vs PIT 3) KCC vs JAX 4) DEN vs SFG
If the Jets had lost on MNF, that would've put the Bengals back in the 6th seed, and I'm sure NBC would've gone for the CIN/PIT game. Jets/Oakland should be one sided, and Broncos/49ers doesn't have the same allure as a rivalry game (and that QB guy.)
The outside the lines story to follow this week is the NFL Network availability issues - the New York fans will get the game for one week because of the local simulacast, but if I'm a fan of Green Bay, Carolina, Atlanta, or St. Louis and I'm locked out of a game that determines my playoff chances, I'm not too happy.
And, I'm looking at the game times right now: Have the NFL and the networks finally come to their senses and made the last week of the season a double double header week?
Yep. If you don't have a Sunday afternoon home team game (and your local net isn't wacky), you'll get 5 games next Sunday - 2 from FOX, 2 from CBS, 1 from NBC.
Now all those nice Bears fans will get an extra 7 hours of drinking time before I get to make my first ever trip to Soldier Field.
I have a friend who is going and wasn't thrilled with the idea when it was a noon start. I can't imagine midnight in a traffic jam is going to be better. When I started figuring out the above last night, I started rooting for the Dolphins just to help him out. Shows how helpful my rooting is, once again.
Brian Griese or Kyle Orton with a 2nd-3rd string team surrounding them are still better than the guy the Vikings are throwing out there. Hell, Randy Orton might make a better QB than the Vikings have. Plus, it isn't like the Packers offense has been setting any positive records recently. Unless the Rams win, I really can't see any of the 7-8 teams winning an early game, thus the Falcons would seemingly be alive for the night game. And, while the Eagles are in the playoffs, there is a gigantic difference between playing Round 1 at home against the putrid 6th seed and having to out to Seattle for the 1st round. Plus, if you have no faith in the Bears, the Eagles win round 2 on the road against the Saints and the Bears faltering would give them home-field in the NFC Title Game. That's why, unless you think the Lions are going to win, this game would at least be guaranteed having 1 team playing for something, while the Packers game is much less than 50-50 if you use mathematical probability. If the Raiders had anything resembling a pulse, that game against the Jets would be the prime time game, but, you can't put the Raiders in prime time again. In terms of the NFL Network: The deal in New York was meaningless for the game, as it is being broadcast over the air on NBC in New York City on Saturday Night (and over the air in Washington). I'm so disgusted with the Giants I don't know if it is worth it to go someplace with the NFL Network that night.
The Horsemen DVD is 3 Discs and 9 hours. Let Us Rejoice and Sing Its Praise.
I'm with you that the Rams would seem to have the best shot when looking at who plays who this last week, but I'm not getting my hopes up after the way this NFL season has gone.
I do however remember many here thinking the Rams would be worse than last year before the season started, so at least they took some steps the other direction.

The only thing to hope for is that lots of the usual suspects will want to get going on their NYE partying, and since it could be Favre's last game decide to sell their tickets and thus give lots of cheeseheads a chance to come down for the game :)
If the Titans win AND the Broncos & Bengals both lose & the Chiefs win, then Tennessee is in the playoffs ... sure it's a long shot, but what a story it would be ...
So it looks like a possible top 15 pick for us, maybe a little lower.
I for one, am very glad the Packers game is getting flexed. I'm going with my best friend and girlfriend to the Cowboys game this Sunday (yes, I'm paying to see the Lions play), and was worried I would have to resort to TIVO of the Packer/Bears game. Now, I can get done with the game, drive back like mad home, and get settled in in time for the Packers game, then celebrate New Years, and a day of college football Monday....WOOO!!

I cannot believe that the Packers have a realistic shot at the playoffs. They have played like such crap this year and have looked so bad at times....and yet, if it hadn't been for Favre single-handedly costing them those games against Buffalo, St. Louis and Seattle, they would be 10-5 and coasting right now. With Chicago resting half their team on Sunday, Green Bay might actually squeak in if the Giants continue their freefall. Amazing.
I don't know what is more disquieting -- the fact that the rest of the statue is missing, or that it has four toes.
