In the West: Detriot vs Colorado

On paper, it look slike an inane match up with tonnes of talent roaming the ice. Both teams have goalies capable of putting on a show, have third lines that could be first liners on other teams, and have againg defenses that know how to lay the HURT on people. While thinking of that, I was surfing the net, and came across this on tsn.ca

"The Colorado Avalanche eliminated the San Jose Sharks with a 1-0 win in Game 7 of their Western Conference semifinal series on Wednesday. Peter Forsberg scored the winner and Patrick Roy got the shutout. "

The last line is the key. I'm saying Aves. I've mentioned in another thread that come playoff time, there is NO ONE more dangerous than Patrick Roy. He's in Smythe mode now. Conn Smythe mode. They'll be thankful if they can get a marble past him....once. That said, I think it'll go at least six just because of the amount of talent on both teams.

Carolina vs Toronto

On paper....who cares. But looking at it by watching their playoffs this year, this to is a series to be excited about. CuJo is out to prove a point, while the battered Mapleleafs only still in it because of skill and they're hungry to end the drought that's been going on sense 1967. Carolina is on a roll, defeated TWO of the best goalies in the NHL. The rest of their team is more deep than star-ladden. Look for Ron Francis to step up to the plate and deliver big. Being a Habs fan my whole life, and from the Ottawa area, I'm sure you can all understand that I HATE THE MAPLELEAFS. That said, I still think they have a shot. Carolina will win....byt the Leafs will make it very interesting.

Detroit over Colorado
Toronto over Carolina

Detroit over Toronto in the Finals

Though Roy has been a force in the playoffs (like always), I think the Wings are just to damn good. They walked past the Blues with ease at a time when St. Louis was playing some of its best hockey of the year.

Detroit vs Colorado

Everyone talking about Roy will make his opponent (Hasek)unhappy and he will win the series for the Red Wings...
Should be a real barn-burner though... I'd say it goes the distance. Wings in 7.

Carolina vs Toronto

Not sure I can pick against Toronto anymore. I thought they were toast against the Islanders, then for sure against the Senators, but they just keep chugging along..
Leafs in 6.

That sets up Detroit vs Toronto for the cup. Wow, talk about a pretty good dream matchup.

Carolina/Toronto

My heart says Canes in 6, but my head can't decide until 5pm MT tonight.

Ron Francis was drafted 4th overall in *1981* He owns us all.

Detroit/Colorado

Should be some damn fine hockey here, kids. I think it goes the full 7...

Q: If you could have interviewed Marvin Gaye, where would you have proposed to meet and what would you have asked him?

A: I would have met anywhere as long as it was before his father shot him. I would have asked him, "Hey, don't you think there's some chance that your father might shoot you? To death, I mean?"

Detroit will definitely take Game 1 but it will go all 7 and I wouldn't be surprised to see a major 12 player brawl at some point in the first 3 games - I want the Avs to win but my head says Wings....so I am picking the Avs (I also hate Detroit)

The WhalerCanes are on a roll and Toronto is making like Jason & Mike Myers combined. Every time you leave them for dead, they pop right back up. Another series that goes all 7 - would love to see the Leafs keep the streak going but I think that the WhalerCanes will pull it off.

Toronto/Carolina

I went over this in another thread. Carolina takes it.

Detroit/Colorado

This series should be great. 2 superstar teams banging heads. Roy has been great and Forsberg is on top of his game right now. However, Detroit is very well rested having only played 10 games so far and also on top of their game.

Detroit in 6

Detroit/Carolina in the finals.

My friends now hate me for my Carolina projection.

"I've mentioned in another thread that come playoff time, there is NO ONE more dangerous than Patrick Roy. He's in Smythe mode now. Conn Smythe mode"

Roy let in 21 goals in the last seven games. Not what I'd call MVP level play. Yes, he played well in the last 2 games, but the 21 goals he let in before that puts "Smyth mode" in question.

Detroit in 6. Detroit is rested, yes, but as Yzerman put it, long breaks arn't always a good thing.

Toronto in 6. Carolina is going to put up a fight, but I think that Toronto is going to keep up their "Hit 'em hard" agenda, and Carolina (I think) just can't keep up.

Edit: I sounded like an asshole. Don't really want to flame anyone.

I think Roy is foaming at the mouth with the chance to challenge Hasek. This is going to be a tight series. I've been going back and forth on this all day, but right now I'll say Detroit. I can't wait to watch these games.

Leafs-Hurricanes. Obviously, I'm a homer. The Leafs have been inspirational through their playoff run. I think this is going to be a lot more physical, like the Islanders-Leafs series(hopefully without the stupidity). I will say the Leafs in 6, because logic has ceased to apply around them. But I can also see them getting beat up even more by the Canes, who aren't as laid back as the Sens.

A Detroit-Toronto final will just be drool-worthy, although I'd feel safe in saying the Leafs' luck will run out right about then.

I don't know why everyone's so horny about the potential for a Detroit-Tranna series. But being a Habs fan since I was quite young might have something to do with it. And I don't want to hear about ``The Original Six''. There's a reason there are now thirty teams (with more on the way); and it's not just that the money is there -- the players are there as well.

Patrick Roy has two great motivators: one, he wants to prove once and for all that he's better than Hasek; two, he wants to live up to the ``I'm sitting out the Olympics for the Avalanche'' line that he gave. If he doesn't put in a stellar performance he's going to be derided even more I'm sure.

I've like Carolina to beat Toronto. They're big, they hit, they're tough, and they're firing on all cylinders. I know the Leafs won tonight, but they're still riding an emotional high. Let's see how they look in games 2 and 3 when they realise they're in a totally different war now.

As for Detroit, I personally don't think Hasek can win the big one. He relies too much on kicking the net off, diving, and other theatrics that he should have been punished for long ago (every goalie has a primadonna melodramatic streak, Hasek's is just overdeveloped). That's not to say he's not an obscenely good goaltender, just that I don't think he's got what it takes to go the distance.

No offense taken John. That's a lot of goals, but when push came ot shove, Roy is there when it counted. He's money, plain and simple. Two game seven shutouts in a row.

Goon, that's one reason why I think the Aves will be on top (Roy raising his level of play because of Hasek).

Tarnish, I'm the same way. I don't care who wins the Cup as long as it's not the Leafs =)

i understand that this is something roy might think to motivate himself and he does have a losing record head-to-head with hasek, but is there anyone who actually believes that hasek is better? maybe if we're talking the last 7 years or so and only the regular season. i think hasek will be more motivated than patrick to prove HE'S better.
even as a wings fan, the avs are still the team to beat and i think will beat the wings.

I think this kind of illustrates why Roy is the better goaltender. He's got Stanley Cup Rings and Conn Smythe Trophies and Vezina Trophies. But he still feels he has something to prove. And he still wants to WIN.

I've never seen any kind of interview with Hasek that indicates to me that he's as much of a competitor. I agree, not having a Cup ring or a Smythe suggests he has more to prove. But neither his play nor the personality he shows in the media (even with a grain of salt) shows me that he feels that way. He's quite satisfied with himself.

I hope he's just as satisfied when he's retired with no rings.

I don't know how to do a direct link to the video, so go to this preview site, and from the menu on the left, choose the video "Top ten Avs/Wings moments."

It's got all the bloody battles over the years. I'm thinking maybe we can expect more of the same this time around. Should be intense anyway.

edit: oops, menu is on the right, under Multimedia.

It's a great set of clips (especially Roy with the swank Euro uppercuts), but they've played it on every edition of Sportsdesk for two days now. It's got my appetite far too whetted for two teams I normally could care two shits about.

Oh wait. It's Sportscenter now, isn't it...

I've seen the clip a bunch of times on Sportsdesk - and find it's missing one key piece...

Shanahan levels Patrick Roy who's calling out Osgood! Shanahan just swooped in there and absolutely ran him over. One of my favorite highlights in playoff history.

Sportscentre! They actually spell it the Canadian way.

I just figured our American friends would like it. I also saw it on TV at the gym earlier today-really did get me up for the series as well.

The Avs-Wings series can be summed up in the greatest sound bite in sports history...

ROFL Bullit!!!!!!!
This is going to be one wicked series.
A few years back these two teams really wanted to kill one another, and while they wont say it out loud now, I bet they still wouldn't mind busting open some lips.

Also, the Wings wanna prove themselves. Best regular season record, a roster of hall of famers..
Roy vs Hasek (not sure if this is the first time ever in a playoff series, I think so?) I don't think they wanna go out against the Avs, a team probably just as talented, they want the grail one more time.
Add to that the 'so we meet again....' factor, and we are set.

The other series is so different.
The Canes already outdid themselves by making it to the finals and should be considered the favorites yet because of the Leafs going crazy they are expected to upset everone for at least one more round.
The Leafs have one helluva momentum going, fighting for everything, and is Carolina diciplined enough not to get affected. Even with vets like Ronnie Francis, you have to wonder. It's been a while for him as well.

Damn, I love this game..

WEST: (1) Red Wings vs. (3) Avalanche
COLORADO in six
Why? Because they're younger, faster & stronger...and have better goaltending.

EAST: (3) Hurricanes vs. (4) Maple Leafs
TORONTO in five
Why? More firepower. But this is contingent on Cujo staying hot.

FINALS: Avalanche vs. Maple Leafs
COLORADO in six
Why? Simple...it's harder to win in the West, so they're all better teams. Fuck...CALGARY, the Freakin' Flames beat most of the good East teams handily...Colorado could dismantle Toronto...
