If you missed the series last week, the list is posted at http://www.tvland.com/originals/catchphrases/quotes.jhtml

The show was enjoyable, and the list is pretty good, but there are a couple of total head-scratchers, especially among the newer stuff. Did I miss the moment when "Suit up", "Hey now", or "Tell me what you don't like about yourself" became big pop-culture touchstones? Does anyone really think that "Welcome to the OC, bitch" will last? Ugh.

Here are some moments that I certainly think outrank those four, and perhaps others on the list as well:

"It's got a good beat, and you can dance to it."
"You are the weakest link. Goodbye!" (How in the world is "You're fired" number *3* and this not there at all? This was big.)
"Just the facts, ma'am." (Much better than "This is the city.")
"Lucy, you got some explainin' to do."
"I'd like to buy a vowel."
"Sha-ZAM!" (Gomer Pyle, not Captain Marvel)
"Nanoo Nanoo"
"COOKIE!"
"This tape will self-destruct in ten seconds."
"Kiss my grits."
"Here Comes The Judge" (This was so big in 1968 that at one time there were four completely different songs on the Billboard chart built around the catchphrase.)
"Is it bigger than a breadbox?"
"One of these days...Bang! Zoom!"
"Big bucks, no whammies!"
"I've fallen and I can't get up."
"Hey Rocky...watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat!"

They had a pretty good list but I agree that most of the one's you listed were very good and deserving.

If you're questioning the validity of "Hey Now", you never watched the show.

"One of these days...Bang! Zoom!"

They pretty much covered that phrase when they did "Baby, you're the greatest". Doing it again might be overkill.

I love the inclusion of "Hey Now". It's probably the only phrase on the list I say on a regular basis (yes, I'm an obnoxious dork), and I have friends who say it who don't even know where it's from. "Larry Sanders" is one of the funniest shows I've ever seen.

I would have to agree. Maybe you didn't have HBO back then?

Can it be considered robbery, though? For instance, I have no Earthly idea what that's a reference to. Maybe I'm just lame, though.

I think the point is that "One of these days..." is a lot more memorable and entrenched in pop culture than "Baby, you're the greatest" and the former should replace the latter on that list. A point which I'm totally in agreement with.

You're certainly not alone. My brother and I use it all the time, and I bet it's REALLY annoying.

It was from "Skin," a FOX drama about the worlds of law and porn clashing in a Romeo and Juliet story. Fox used the line in every ad they ran, and this was one of those ads FOX ran and ran and ran. The delivery of Ron Silver made it iconic.

The veeeeeeeeeeeeery short-lived Fox series "Skin". But the reason it became a running joke back in 2003 is that during the baseball playoffs, Fox ran promos for the show about 84,593 times with that line in every single one.

No. Just no. That was so lame and annoying. And people kept saying it, but that only made it worse. That, Lady Lumps, Full House, and the Macarena are absolutely the worst things to happen to the human race in the last ten thousand years.

What? No Downtown Julie Brown and "Wubba Wubba Wubba"? Hey.... wha' happened?!

(that's a joke, son)

I remember "Sit on it" from Happy Days and "Ya'll Come Back now, Ya' hear" from Beverly Hillbillies as being rather memorable. The latter even spawned some Internet slang. But it was also part of the closing song for "Hillbillies", so that's probably why it was excluded. If you begin to include songs, you'd have to mention "Just th' good ol' boys.."

I'd also nominate "you dummy!" from Sanford & Son, although it wasn't always used in the same context.

I know "Hey Now" mostly from its constant replaying and use on the Stern show. Do they still do that?

But it's a little dubious when quotes from Nixon, Kennedy and Bush the Elder are included. Those aren't necessarily "TV quotes".

"You are the weakest link. Goodbye!" (How in the world is "You're fired" number *3* and this not there at all? This was big.)

If this is on the list, it has to be followed up by Stewie's monologue after being zinged by the line by his classmate.

"Aha ha ha. Oh, gosh that's funny. That's really funny. Do you write your own material? Do you? Because that is so fresh. You are the weakest link goodbye. You know, I've never heard anyone make that joke before. Mmm. You're the first. I've never heard anyone reference, reference that outside the program before. Because that's what she says on the show right? Isn't it? You are the weakest link goodbye. And yet, you have taken that and used it out of context, to insult me in this everyday situation. God what a clever, smart girl you must be, to come up with a joke like that all by yourself. Mmm, that's so fresh too. Any Titanic jokes you want to throw at me while we're hitting these at the height of their popularity? Hmm? Cause... I'm here. God you're SO funny."

I hate to correct one of the quotes mentioned above; but the character of Sgt. Joe Friday never said "Just the facts, ma'am" on Dragnet:

I must admit I never watched the Larry Sanders Show--but for a line to be truly iconic, that shouldn't matter. I never watched Beavis and Butt-head or In Living Color, either, but those phrases were part of pop culture--you couldn't not know them.

I must admit that I'm surprised that Friday not only never said "Just the facts, ma'am," but apparently never said even "just the facts" either. Score one for Stan Freberg, I guess.

Yes, I do think Honeymooners is worthy of two listings. Obviously they wouldn't have put anything about "Bang Zoom" in the segment on "Baby you're the greatest" if it had its own entry.
