The Patriots may be a playoff team, but there is no way they're going anywhere without a healthy Laurence Maroney. And Ben Watson. And Vince Wilfork. And Rodney Harrison.
If Tampa doesn't kick a 62 yard field goal against Philly, they would be right in the midst of the Oakland/Detroit #1 pick battle. In addition, Philly would be in 1st place in the NFC East had that kick not been made, due to tie-breakers. At some point, maybe you squib kick or kick the ball out of bounds when Hester is returning for Chicago. Make the Chicago offense have to consistently beat you. Vikings might sneak into the playoffs while no one is paying attention, especially if they win this week at home against the Jets. Denver really died a quick death as a team this year. From looking at potentially home field throughout to questionable whether they finish above .500.

Generally speaking I agree, but last night those were both kickoff returns, so out of bounds is a bad idea. Why he would ever see a punt coming his away baffles me, though.

Even with a kickoff out of bounds, do you really think the Chicago offense can consistently engineer 60-yard TD drives, or even get 25+ yards for a shot at a field goal?
By the way, whoever thought we'd be saying this ten weeks ago?
The team that played last night against St. Louis is a team that should be able to get to the Super Bowl. I don't like anyone against San Diego right now, but I really can't see any NFC taking down the team that played last night.
Of course if Evil Rex decides to appear again in the playoffs then I can't see any NFC playoff team losing to Da Bears.
Is there any way the Lions could trade their first round pick and possibly their second round pick for like 4 picks in the 3rd round and just draft an offensive line? I am no fan of Kitna, but I don't think any QB could thrive behind a line that bad. There are times when he can't even complete his drop without someone, usually two people, in his face.

I was talking about that last night with someone. Tampa Bay, a team which won its division last year, belongs right in the middle of the "worst teams in the NFL" discussion. Part of it's because they have to go with Gradkowski, and he no doubt has made some stupid rookie mistakes, but I think for the most part he's played well. I wonder exactly how much goodwill the Super Bowl win bought Gruden, because since driving Rich McKay out of town, he's run this team into the ground. That once-great defense is finally getting old with no replacement in sight, the offensive line hasn't been good in Tampa ever and the receivers can't catch a damn pass unless the ball is dropped in a vat of super glue beforehand.
That said, this might be one of those years where the first overall pick isn't such a prize, with more question marks surrounding players than dollar signs, unless I'm overlooking someone. Of course, the Texans screwed it up last year when there was a can't-miss prospect (two, maybe!), so who knows.

This franchise is just so bad.
There was a blurb yesterday in SI.com's "Truth & Rumors" section about how the Carolina Panthers could be interested in putting together a package in hopes of moving up to the #1 spot to nab Brady Quinn ... but again, pure speculation ...

Replace "Lions" with "Browns" and "Kitna" with "Frye" and you have captured my feelings as well. Scary how our franchises are so similar.

See also: "Texans", "Carr, David", at least their first few years. I'm not sure Vince Young could even be Vince F'in Young behind that line.

Don't be so sure. Since the first appearance of Evil Rex (Arizona), they are still 6-2, both of which were perfectly fine losses (Miami & New England), not to mention out of conference. Unless he's Supremely Evil Rex, that defense and Hester appear to be able to bail him out of nearly anything.

True, but it hasn't been all Evil Rex. In those eight games its been:
San Francisco - Win 41-10 - Good Rex out in force Miami - Lost 31-13 - Evil Rex appears NY Giants - Win 38-20 - Both Evil Rex and Good Rex get to play one half. NY Jets - Win 10-0 - Evil Rex is bailed out by awesome defense. New England - Lost 17-13 - Evil Rex not bailed out this time. Minnesota - Win 23-13 - Evil Rex gets a win versus Evil Brad Johnson and Evil Brooks Bollinger. St. Louis - Win 42-27 - Good Rex reappears for the first time in weeks.
What scares me is that when Evil Rex appears, the team has massive trouble scoring points. Even as good as the defense is, it's hard to imagine them beating Dallas or New Orleans or Seattle while scoring 13 points. And all it takes is one appearance of Evil Rex to kill them in the playoffs.
On the Bears: If they keep losing defensive starters, it almost doesn't matter whether Good Rex or Evil Rex shows up in the playoffs. If the Saints end up going to Chicago in the NFC Title Game, the Bears should hope they get the late time slot and a sub 15 degree evening with wind/bad weather to neutralize the Saints offense. On the draft: The danger for the Lions is that Calvin Johnson might be #1 on the draft boards, so Millen's fetish could appear again. Quinn had a 7-1 TD/INT ratio in his 2 seasons under Weis, so he should be a good NFL QB, as long as he doesn't end up in the black hole of suckitude that is the Raiders. Draft probably won't be as deep as last year, but last year appears to have been an excellent draft class. Of course, you never know what is out there until the juniors decide whether they are staying or leaving.

Actually, Quinn is 7-1 this year and roughly 5-1 if you look at both years. I don't know. Maybe it's just my hatred of Notre Dame, but I'm not so sure he's going to be a great NFL QB. I really don't like the way he handles heavy pressure _ he seems to get rattled easily when he's got somebody in his face. Plus, he's put up great numbers, but he hasn't beaten ANYBODY.

If he gets the right team and coach I think he'll be ok. If not, well I see him not lasting very long at all. To be honest he actually reminds me of Brady. I mean was anyone really THAT impressed with Brady in college? And even now it's not like I personally have ever watched him and been in awe of hiw raw ability. He got the right team and coach and he's a smart player with ok ability. Sounds like Quinn to me. Doubt he'll find a fit like the Pats.

I think he's pretty much the opposite of Brady. Nobody at all was talking about Brady coming out of college. Quinn's the Irish golden boy, and whereever he goes he's going to carry big expectations. Part of the reason Brady's story was so great was that nobody knew a damn thing about him when Bledsoe went down.
I don't think Quinn's going to amount to much as a pro, though. In college, he ALWAYS loses the big games. Reminds me of another golden-armed quarterback who put up nice numbers but could never win an important game to save his life. But Quinn's no Peyton Manning; I don't think he handles pressure well and I don't think he's nearly as smart at managing a game. At the very least, I don't think he's a lock to be a success as a pro.
I wasn't meaning in terms of how he's perceived compared to Brady, but his actual talent level. Brady has never been the most gifted passer. Not close really. But he was smart and had the perfect system for what he could do.
That's what I see in Quinn. He's not by any means the most talented college QB. But he's smart and is in a system that works for his abilities. In the pros, if he lucks into a fit like Brady did(which he wont) then he'll be ok. If not, he's a nobody.

I'm only going to disagree with your assessment of his "talent level". He throws LASERS, and as pretty and accurate of a deep ball as anyone in the league. He doesn't have Brett Favre's arm, but he's right up there in the top group of QBs. I think his superior talent is part of the reason Belichick thinks WRs are essentially plug-ins.
I really don't feel like I have any idea if Brady Quinn is a "talented" QB or not. It seems like he SHOULD be, but I certainly think he could just as easily become Tim Couch than Carson Palmer.
