Though of course I've known about the PSP's web browser since soon after I got it, I was finally able to connect to the internet with it last night and fiddle around on it. In fact the first place I went was this board.

I'm not particularly technologically minded, however, so I have a few questions about it:

--How is the internet connectivity accomplished, and am I paying for it when I log in?

--What's the security like, and is there a danger of someone hacking into my PSP with a virus or something?

--How do I play PSP games with other users online?

Thanks very much in advance for helping with these questions!

You don't pay for it, it connects through a wireless router or access point, there are generally some near you, many people have them in their homes, unsecured (this is a HUGE threat to your legal safety, btw). You should seriously check into that, if it's your own wireless router, it should be secured with an encrypted password; otherwise a neighbor can use it to do something stupid, like music downloading, and you get blamed for it. There have been a LOT of cases like this lately. It's scary stuff. The courts aren't letting up on these people either; saying they should have been more secure.

No one will hack your psp, it has too little memory, and nothing useful. It'd be like trying to hack your ps2' sure it's 'doable' but why would you?

Some games have multiplayer support, there are two kinds:
-Ad-Hoc: Play head to head to head, with other people nearby, without connecting through an internet gateway. This is the lag-free option, programmed into more psp games.
-Infrastructure: Your PSP connects automatically to a location, pre-designated by the game software, to link with other players via the internet who are playing the same game. This mode can be better, because you are more likely to find other players interested; but only a few games support it. Also, it is not the most stable for anything more than two people. This is because the system itself transfers at wireless b standard, which is a max of 11mbps down and upstream TOGETHER. Then, it is run through a router, through the net, to a server, and then to a router, to a system. All in all, this method leaves a lot to be desired, as you can suffer some serious lag from it.

I'm assuming you've updated your psp. How sad, if you hadn't, there is a world of alternative software readily available for them in v1.5.

All the info may not be 100% accurate or other W's may have a different opinion. But it's pretty close to being right on the money.
