So, were all you guys as bamboozled by the Ric Flair storyline as I was? I missed the first couple minutes, but was there a real reason Flair was teaming with Helmsley again? Shouldn't Helmsley be taking joy in Ric Flair's blood? Was Maria not around to play a sympathy character?

If Kevin Nash and the Blue Meanie had kids they would be today's DX.

The WWE might have accomplished more by just not running a show this week. The Spirit Squad is gone so maybe that's something. Everyone, but Kenny who will probably stay on Raw, will be showing up at a Smackdown or ECW program near you.

Great, another round of DX/Spirit Squad. Well, at least it won't be long and drawn out. I'm surprised how good the Squad looked in this match....The Hardyz home video was a nice touch to preview the match tonight....As bad as it was, I laughed at the OVW sticker....Well, the return of Mercury should strengthen the tag division....

Well, the right woman won the battle royal, and she looked good doing it. I did like Mickie on commentary as well....Still not sure where this Eugene/Duggan feud is going, but at least they didn't just forget about it....So no other faces can save Flair? Still an interesting angle though....Nothing really wrong with the Masters/Lawler match, other than it belonged in the 1980s....Decent Umaga/Cena segment....

I'm still not sure what to think of that Cryme Tyme segment....See, it would be nice if they built up the DX/respect thing over a few weeks, then it would mean more. The main event was good, and the non-finish was actually okay with me. What kind of party DX was having for Flair (considering EVERYONE expected them to come help the Hardyz) was strange.

Considering that Victoria didn't get Candice over the top rope, thus invalidating the final elimination altogether, showing a replay was probably not a good idea. I know, I know; it's a work. I probably shouldn't care, but that kind of sloppiness is indicative all the way around of the ambivalent attitude WWE seems to have toward, y'know, competence these days.

Wasn't Ric Flair in a similar "unseen beatdown, then found sopping wet with an absolutely ridiculous amount of blood" segment not too many months ago? Maybe it was a year ago. I can't recall. Either way, someone needs to ease back on the hyperbole. When the "beatdown" looks like an attempted homicide, and no one is doing anything to stop it, we're all more retarded for it. And a front-row audience member audibly calling for one more conchairto certainly hurts the mood they're trying to establish.

The Cryme Tyme thing was sort of lame, but nothing you wouldn't see on a late-night talk show. Would have been more effective if the black wrestler(s) getting "social justice" were not stereotypes. Of course, all the blacks are heels now, save for Ron Simmons who is semi-retired, so maybe that couldn't be helped.

While the Spirit Squad gimmick has certainly run its course, I don't believe that is due to the natural shelf life of the concept expiring. They were bungled so badly for so long they couldn't be expected to survive. I know some dX-phyte will probably chastise me for being right, but babyfaces need heel foils. Now that they've buried a large mass of them, maybe Vince can try to establish someone who can be kinda considered to possibly be in their league, like, marginally? Be nice, that. If that was gonna be Edge and Orton, they'd have gotten at least one single elimination the night before. Oh, and can someone explain why the Spirit Squad is off RAW because Triple H abitrarily decided those were the terms of their bout? Yes, he mailed them to OVW, chortle chortle. But within the context of the show itself, it doesn't make sense for their RAW contracts to be null and void because they lost a match management never signed off on. This is the kind of lazy storytelling that makes so much of WWE lame and forgettable.

The Umaga gimmick, unlike the Spirit Squad, is reaching its natural expiration date. While there have been some minor bungles in Umaga's handling, like DQ losses that no one remembers, he'd pretty much be at this point in his progression no matter what they'd done. There are only two ways to go with a monster heel character. Either he wins the title or he doesn't. Yokozuna, for example, would have been little more than a Berserker/Damien Demento/Waylon Mercy-like footnote had they not made the decision to go all the way with him. Once they did, he developed into a very credible heel Champion who was part of pretty much the only money matches WWE put on during that period. He became someone people really wanted to see beat. They can accomplish that with Umaga now if he goes over Cena. If he loses the character is finished. An example of how that looks, see Vader in 1996. When he didn't get the title off Shawn at Summerslam, there was really nothing else you could do with him. He did nothing noteworthy after that and never really got over again— well, he did manage to refer to himself as fecal matter, which probably is noteworhty, but not in a good way.

The main event was a good match, at least. Started slow but built steadily. Jeff really has looked good the past few months; until this week his segments were about the only ones I'd make a point of catching. The screwy finish was necessary as constant hot-shotting of the tag-straps doesn't help anyone. The Hardys winning those belts now would be like pretending it's 1999 again. dX winning them has a similar taint on it, but really, I don't think those straps should go anywhere till at least Wrestlemania.

It hurts to be a wrestling fan.

Welcome to Monday Night Raw, from Pittsburgh PA. Another go at a recap; thanks for the kind words some of you gave last week.

Lawler introduces the Hardys reuniting to face team Rated RKO for the Tag Titles. Ric Flair comes out to open. Flair seems embarrassed that he was beat up by some male cheerleaders after his SS win. Footage. Flair wants all of the Squad to come down and face off against his team of Olde Tymers. He’s interrupted by the Squad, who execute a cheer before marching down the ramp. They begin to surround him, but the music and entrance of DX scare them out of the ring. Michaels bows down to Flair and HHH hugs him. HHH wonders if Pittsburgh is ready. But he himself is not, growing sick of beating up on the Spirit Squad. He guarantees this will be the last we see of the Spirit Squad. The Squad interrupts him and the bell rings. Shawn and a Mikey are legal to start. Tag to HHH who dominates for a while before tagging in Flair. JR repeats that Flair may not be in shape to fight just 24 hours after Survivor Series. Chops and a back body drop precede a tag to Michaels, who executes minor offense before tagging Flair back in. Kick to the back by Kenny from the outside evens things up. All swarm into the ring, and the Spirit Squad are soon all tossed out of the ring. Michaels and HHH join Flair in a strut as we head to commercial.

We come back to find Johnny and Michaels in the ring. Johnny tags in a mate and some heel tactics are used to isolate Michaels in the corner. Kenny comes on for more offense and taunting. Lawler actually says he wouldn’t mind seeing an athletic maneuver at a pep rally, but isn’t sure if it belongs in a wrestling match. Um, okay. High risk piggyback move from the Squad backfires, resulting in a hot tag to HHH, who cleans house as JR shrieks in delight. Trips tags in Flair, who sets up a Figure Four. Other Squad members attempt to intervene but are dispatched by the finishing moves of DX. More enter but fall prey to all three men performing Figure Four leglocks, resulting in all tapping out. A real feel-good story that thankfully is only opening the show and not the main event. Flair actually joins them in celebratory crotch chops.

Home video footage of the teenage Hardy Boys cutting promos and doing moves on a trampoline, followed by Survivor Series recap and adbreak.

We return to footage of HHH pulling out a sledge hammer and the Spirit Squad running away. Live, DX stuffs one of the SS into a chest and locks the lid. JR helpfully points out that all the Squad are in the box and Michaels slaps a “destination: OVW” sign on it. An “OPS” guy with a clipboard confirms the destination as Louisville. Throwaway joke about how OPS is cheaper than UPS. They say they need it there within a few weeks, and Michaels signs the form “McMahon.” As the chest is carted away, Michaels gets a little faux-weepy.

JR reports that the Hardy Boyz challenged ECW wrestlers to a match anywhere, any time. We go to Nitro and a somewhat re-skankified Melina for a promo. Nitro mumbles his first few lines, and then Melina introduces Joey Mercury and Nitro/Mercury accept the challenge, setting a match for December to Dismember.

Vivian Garcia introduces the next match, a Divas Battle Royal, the winner to face new Women’s Champ Mickie James, who arrives to provide auxiliary commentary. Melina, Candace, Victoria (with new? red hair), Maria, and Torrie (with dog) will participate. Melina is eliminated by Victoria. Maria is nearly eliminated by Victoria who then turns her attention to Torrie and throws her out. Maria, who’s taken her grand old time getting back into the ring, ends up getting tossed as well, leaving Victoria and Candace. Candace makes a mild effort to heave Victoria out, but doesn’t last long. Victoria is victorious, and then drags Candace back in and for Mickie’s benefit, executes a poorly-sold Widow’s Peak. Evidently this match was a showcase for just how depleted the Women’s division is.

Video footage from the Hardy brothers’ debut on Heat vs. Kaientai in September of 1999. Adbreak.

Eugene comes out to mixed response. He looks sad and confused. Out comes Hacksaw. He accosts Eugene but is restrained by the ref. Eugene slaps Duggan and still looks confused. Duggan controls for a minute or two. Eugene pulls Duggan into the top rope from the outside and then smashes his head into the ringpost. Swinging neckbreaker into a pin for Eugene. He calls for the mic. He doesn’t want to be made fun of. Or laughed at. He’s special. And angry. I can’t believe this is still going on.

DX backstage meet Dusty Rhodes. They say they’re having a party for Flair later. Michaels giddily declares that he’s got ginger ale, soda, chips, and a karaoke machine, and takes off. HHH has two words: booze and broads. Dusty likes that better. This is followed by the most horribly inappropriate Ron Simmons “Damn!” Moment of the Week yet. It appears he’s joining them for the party. Why not have him suddenly appear on camera right after Shawn talks about his lame party stuff, and then have Trips do his line? Terrible, but the crowd STILL ate it up. Adbreak.

It’s The Cutting Edge. Edge sarcastically congratulates DX for beating up male cheerleaders for the umpteenth time, then cuts a promo on the Hardys. He dedicates his tag match tonight to the greatest Women’s champ of all time, Lita. Lita is not his guest, however. But when he tells the guest to come on down, no one does. He gets mad and threatens to pull the plug on the show. Randy Orton appears from the shadows saying that he thinks the gets is over by him. Edge goes over to check it out, and finds a laid out and bloodied Ric Flair. Orton drags Flair all the way out to the ring. Edge calls DX out to “make the save”, and Orton calls them cowards. They argue that DX only cares about themselves. Edge gets some chairs; conchairto. Orton adds one for good measure. They leave a very bloody flair on the floor. Adbreak.

Recap of what we just saw and Flair getting taken out on a stretcher. JR and the King grouse about what they just saw, as Lawler’s music starts. He sheds his robe and goes to the ring. Chris Masters comes out. Masters controls early. Bear hug on Lawler is fought out via a bite to the nose. Lawler gets the upper hand, and puts three fist drops on Masters, who essentially no-sells and regains control. Snap suplex to the King followed by an attempted fist drop by Masters, evaded by Lawler. Master Lock eventually applied, but inexplicably, Carlito’s music plays. Carlito comes out, and Masters breaks the hold. He tries to slap Carlito from inside the ring, but it’s dodged and gets a face full of masticated apple for his trouble. Lawler creeps and uses the schoolboy rollup to get the pin.

Adbreak, followed by more Hardy classic footage. Various Pittsburgh Steelers are on hand. Out comes Umaga and his manager. Ross asks us to look at Umaga’s physical attributes. I see boobs. Whatever. Nice, Estrada on the mic. He shows us some footage of Umaga using monitors to slay opponents at Survivor Series. He runs down the list of Umaga’s victims: HHH, Shawn Michaels, Kane, “the list goes on and on.” I suppose he prefers not to name the nameless local schmucks he squashed on a weekly basis early on. Estrada positions his man as the next WWE Champion. He makes an official challenge to Cena for the Championship. Cue Cena’s music for his entrance and response. He calmly accepts and holds up the belt and the men stare each other down. Cena takes off his shirt. The ladies in the crowd swoon. Umaga takes off his…flowery towel? Less reaction from the ladies for that one. Estrada ushers his man out of the ring. Adbreak means maybe John Cena speaks six words and throws no punches on RAW tonight.

At the announcer’s table, JR interviews Lawler on what is RAW’s sports entertainment version of the Michael Richards incident. Footage of a comic bombing at a poorly constructed comedy set and essentially re-enacting the Richards incident. Poorly. Cryme Tyme arrives on the film and intimidates him. Shad boots him in the face. The audience on the film applauds. They make some sort of joke and there’s laughter. They take the wallet of the guy they just booted. Cut to JR and King chuckling. JR actually mentions Richards by name. The hell? King: “All I know is that I thought that was great.”

Mercifully, we see Jeff Hardy backstage, confronted by Edge. Edge taunts Hardy a little. Hardy plays the strong silent, unimpressed type. Edge pats the belt: “12 time tag-team champion.” Keanu, errr, Jeff Hardy: “Woah.” Edge compliments Jeff and then calls Matt the most overrated guy on the roster. Orton arrives, followed by Matt, followed by commercial.

Edge and Orton come to the ring. Footage of bloody Flair. Out come the Hardys. Jeff and Orton. Jeff claps his hands to rile the crowd. The brothers control early. Nice comment by Lawler that Orton is less familiar with his opponents then Edge is. Tag to Edge swings the edge to team Rated RKO. Back to Orton who does his garden variety stomp on Jeff. Edge cover after standing drop-kick earns a two count. Orton chokes Jeff on the ropes. Double-team toss countered by Jeff; hot tag to his brother. Simultaneous bulldog-clothesline takes out both heels. Edge rolls out, double-suplex on Orton. Jeff and Matt setup for simultaneous top-rop moves, but Edge recovers to toss Jeff off to the outside. Orton up to attack Matt on the ropes. Hardy shoves him down, but Orton evades the moonsault. Edge prepares for a speak, but an adbreak arrives.

We’re back with Hardy fighting out of a facelock-type hold by Orton. He is quickly smote, however. Edge tags in. We get footage of Edge spearing Matt during the break, and the pin interrupted by Jeff. JR says that it “might not have been legal but it was within the parameters of the rules.” Mmm. ‘kay. Another hold on Matt. Flapjack into a cover gets a 2-count. Hardy fights back but a drop-toe hold earns a tag to Orton who beats up on Matt some more. A cover gets two, and the same hold wears Matt down some more. Tag to Edge. Edge hoists Matt onto the ropes. Elbows knock Edge down, Matt connects on a moonsault. Cover gets only 2. Edge gets a tag to Orton who doesn’t let Matt get to Jeff. Some ineffective offense allows Matt to escape and scurry to his corner for the tag. Jeff on fire for a while, derailed only slightly before Matt hits a Whisper in the Wind on Orton for another two-count. Edge intervenes but Matt intercepts. Side Effect, woah, I’d forgotten about that one. It’s followed by a double-Side Effect on Orton, which gets a long two. Leg drop by Matt from the second rope results in a cover but Jeff is pulled off and out of the ring by Edge. Matt Hardy with a flying crossbody over the rope sends both to the floor. Matt rushes to kneel in front of Orton in the corner for the flying kick by Jeff, but Orton escapes and Jeff crashes into the turnbuckle nicely. Kick to Matt is followed by an attempted RKO on Jeff, who pushed Randy off into Matt’s waiting Twist of Fate. Jeff Hardy hits the Swanton and has the cover but Edge flies in with one of the belts and knocks Jeff Hardy. Ref calls the DQ. Edge lays out Matt with the belt as well. JR calls them “dirty bastards” and then apologizes for using such language during the holiday season. Edge hits an impaler on Jeff, Orton adds an RKO of Matt onto the belt for good measure. JR closes by promising that DX will be back next week, therefore, all will be right with the world. Black.

I guess it's nice to reinforce the bastarddom of Edge and Orton and dragging Flair out like that pretty much accomplished it. Although I hate hate hate "DX is God," I'll have to live with it for a while. I actually wish they did forget about Eugene-Duggan. It's not worth the time on my screen. As mentioned, that women's division sure thinned out fast. The Cryme Tyme segment was an abomination in almost every way. First JR is all quasi-serious, saying "the words on this tape are not for everyone", then we're done watching and he and King are yukking it up? It doesn't make sense, and to do a re-enactment of the Richards tirade ...."clumsy" doesn't even BEGIN to describe the execution of an idea that can only be called "ill-conceived." Actually, it can probably be called a lot more than that but I'll leave that to other peoples' opinions.

I hope that this really is the end of the Spirit Squad. Let the few remaining dead horse molecules disperse peacefully. I said a few weeks ago that I hoped that at least one wrestler would survive the gimmick, but I guess even that was too much to hope for.

I hate what they're doing with Eugene. Idiot savant Eugene was, at its best, an amusing midcard gimmick (see his "training montage" with Regal, for instance). Angry Eugene was just sad and disturbing. Still, it'll probably be another three weeks before they manage to remember this angle again.

Enjoy coming out on top for one night, Edge and Randy. Don't hold your breath waiting for it to last.

Women's battle royale's are always contested under the "through the ropes" stip. Not all the divas can be chucked over the top.

It was a *wink, wink, smart burial.* The mainstream audience isn't supposed to even know what OVW is. This was for the smarks. This was "hey, we're annoucing to the world that we're ending the cheerleader gimmicks* --- which everyone hated up until Shawn and H started wrestling them. Just like everyone hates Mike Knox UNTIL Shawn Michaels cracks on him.
Within the context of the show, well...they beat them down with the sledghammer and then shipped them to Louisville. I presume IF the SS can escape from the box before they get mailed technically we can see them back. Truthfully, a SS break-up angle would have died a slow death. Taking them off TV till Rumble and re-tooling isn't the worst idea.

I have very little complaint with this episde. Not amazing, but well booked and didn't annoy me.

Victoria being pushed in a nice surprise, but where the hell is Beth? She is the obvious choice to feud with Mickie next. And it saddens me to think that Mickie thinks Victoria is a psycho when Mickie herself was batshit insane just a few months ago. If anything having both of them be insane would make the angle even better.

And WTF is up with Mercury rejoining Melina and Nitro? Don't they think having some sort of angle explaining why they are back together is needed? I am not complaining about adding another tag team to RAW, but jeez, there should be a little more thought into this.

Also, Flair bleeding like he just died isn't anything new. Triple H did a number on Flair a while back that looked somewhat similar. I think Flair just wants the Muta scale renamed in his honor.

Women's battle royals have through the rope eliminations, cf. Taboo Tuesday 2004. I mean obviously, dude. I'm torn on what happened to Candice and her nose. I don't like her so it's funny, but she also got back in and took the Widow's Peak so I have to respect her and once again acknowledge the improvements she's made. Dang.

Wasn't Ric Flair in a similar "unseen beatdown, then found sopping wet with an absolutely ridiculous amount of blood" segment not too many months ago? Maybe it was a year ago.

Yeah I think Ric got the beatdown to his death last fall ... from Hunter.

When the "beatdown" looks like an attempted homicide, and no one is doing anything to stop it, we're all more retarded for it.

I totally agree, although at least this one is seemingly going to be sold semi-longterm. Also, wot, Cena doesn't like Flair? Jeff Hardy admitted to watching it happen and he was too busy thinking up burns about being weighed down to intervene?

Of course, all the blacks are heels now

I thought only three of them were in the ... chest? so Kenny and Johnny will probably stay and feud. Mikey deserved a better fate too.

I hate what they're doing with Eugene.

THE EVIL RETARD. Like Adrien Brody in The Village. When he took the mic I thought we were gonna get the "ha ha suckers, now who's retarded?" but alas.

The Spirit Squad started as one of those "oh please" gimmicks, then got awesome for the span between like February when they started doing trampoline spots and being Vince's henchmen in the Michaels feud and beating people down all the way through the first match with DX, when they had actually been established to the point that they were legit over enough to be the heel opponents in the DX reunion match.

Then they got blamed for ratings that should've been higher and it couldn't be superawesome hilarious DX that was lacking, obviously, so from then on out they got obliterated and all that time spent building them up and actually succeeding at it was wasted and then they became cannon fodder. RIP Spirit Squad. Save the cheerleaders, save the world.

Uhhhhh. Maybe Mercury apologized to them as part of his rehab. Apologized to them for getting turned on.

I wouldn't be either because MNM is much > Johnny Nitro, singles heel. But I believe Melina said it was an MNM reunion for one night only, before Joey goes back to Smackdown or moves to ECW to mean nothing. I hope I'm wrong though.

I may be remembering incorrectly, but the last time Flair was found covered in blood like this, I think Carlito was the culprit (and actualy admitted to it) and it was the time Michaels was supposed to tag with Flair later that night to fight....two guys that I can't remember.

I think the attack on Flair by Rated RKO was good, as it cranked up the douche factor for those guys. But it took WAY too long to the point we were all wondering where the hell all the guys who "respect" Flair in the locker room were.

They should have just pulled him out from the curtain on the stage and laid him out there. Then run like hell because the entire locker room should should have been coming after them.

The main event was good, and not much crap on the show. Can't ask for much more.

This was a pretty decent show in my eyes ... of course there's the crap factor of Lawler vs. Masters & the re-hashing of the Carlito-Masters feud.

Edge is faw & away the heel of 2006 ... I'd really love to see him get another run with the WWE title sooner than later.

Once again, WWE tried to penetrate the mainstream with the Cryme Tyme skit ... really, really lame ...

I'm sure I'll eventually get tired of "Damn!", but for now I pop like a little kid for it.

I'm thinking that the writers didn't want people to come out of the locker room to help Flair because it would diminish their constant pushing of "But DX isn't in the building!" as it will reveal that yes, there are other people besides DX that can save someone from an attack.

Well now, let's be fair. Cena can save people from an attack too. He just has to show up five minutes too late.

WWE.com is reporting that Candace got her nose broke by that kick. That seems a bit convenient as the announcers immediately stressed that V fucked her up with the kick. Nice spot and all but I wonder if Ms. Michelle is going in for work?!?

Fun little show, and it was nice to see DX give a rub to an up-and-coming mid-carder like Ric Flair.

Flair seemed extremely emotional at the end of his match. Perhaps he isn't sure if he will return to the ring after this sabbatical. And, Jim Ross shouldn't tease us by mentioning the words Horsemen reunion and then having DX come out. I would have settled for Mongo and Roma.
Is it a slight bit hypocritical for them to celebrate the Hardy's backyard exploits yet force people who purchase their DVD's to have to watch the Don't Try This At Home reminder every time they load a disc. They are going to have to change that reminder very quickly though, as Angle is all over it visually and audibly.
I was waiting for the Kill The Retard chant for Eugene. Hopefully that is the end of Duggan though.
When exactly did Shawn Michaels become Rick Steiner from 1989 mentally?
They are really desperate to keep Cryme Time out of the ring.
Forget having top card guys come down to save Flair, why not face jobbers like The Highlanders come down, get hit with chairs while failing to make the save, and thus providing a rationale for a throwaway tag title match between the 2 teams.
Shelton. Where are you?

I like Flair...but who the hell did he piss off to deserve yet another huge beat down like what he received on Monday? If he's tired after a few matches and needs time off, that's all fine and dandy, he's a sporadic wrestler. But seriously...the two solo conchairtos were difficult to watch.

I am so very tempted to pick up a Ron Simmons "DAMN" shirt. As long as it's just the word and nothing on the back (as it would seem, that's what it is) it could prove to be a seller. Hey, WWE: less is often more. Concerning Benoit's new shirt: Beniot the wrestler is no nonsense: make Benoit's shirt the same.

So are the Hardy Boyz now ECW "extremists"? Or are they Raw Superstars? What's the deal there? Colour me confused. I wish the WWE would have enough faith in the ECW brand to support their own PPV without having to add other brands' members to it.

I'm a dot com now!

I used to make my stepmom play me in that game all the time. I would pick Star Man (I was a fan of cruiserweight style even back then!) and she'd get the Amazon, and every match that damn Amazon would chew on my head, and I'd get visibly angry.
