I've donated $1,500 each year to the mass communications school since earning my journalism degree at the University of South Florida; eventually, I'd like the school to open a journalism-only school, at which point I would up my donation.

The reason I bring it up, though, is because today I made my first donation to the school's athletic program. Maybe it's because of my recent raise; maybe I'm just feeling inspired by the big win over West Virginia. I'm not sure if this one will become an annual donation, we'll see if the school gets the basketball program going.

I have donated some to my BS school but the school where I received my MS and PhD eliminated the dept. I was affiliated with, jammed alot of people I worked with and under, and generally is run by jerks. I get the calls every year from some coed working with the latest "we are raising another $300 million campaign" and inform them that when they reinstitute the dept I graduated from, I will donate.

So they get nothing.

I donate anyhwere from $500 to $2,000 each year to Provdence College. Why? I am hoping it will give my kids and edge if they try to get in there. Once they are in school, I will no longer donate.

I don't see myself ever donating to my undergraduate school. I'm in the process of getting myself into a graduate school, so maybe I'll end up wanting to donate there.

I have and will continue to donate what I can to the alumni fund of my undergrad fraternity.

Eventually, I may, but I just can't spare the money to do it. Doesn't stop them from asking, what with the new athletic center and such.

I joined the alumni association and sent them a one time check for a lifetime membership. This means a lifetime of phone calls from what I can tell.

Luckily, UCSD doesn't have a football team so there shouldn't be too much fund-raising.

I donate to the school where I got my graduate degree because they covered my tuition and also paid me a stipend covering living expenses. I guess it's a way to try and make the same opportunity available for others.

As for my undergraduate institution, I pay my annual alumni association dues but nothing else. If I gotten a scholarship or financial aid, I would also donate to their general fund.

BTW, Guru, the lifetime of phone calls happen regardless of whether or not they have ever received a cent of your money.

I don't donate to any colleges or universities: they keep raising tuition rates to obscene levels each year, so why should I?

I'd rather put my money to good use, by giving it to a registered charity.

No. They got enough of my money when I was a student there; they still get plenty of my money from taxes.

I agree that tuition rates are getting (even more) insane, but I think in many cases there are reasons for that. It's harder to find good teachers. More people are going to college every year and it's harder to maintain campuses. I know at USF, now home to about 40,000 undergrad students, the campus was initially designed to handle not even half that. The campus is in a tight spot in a big city, leaving little room for expansion, so they need to find ways to accommodate all these students (the university, when I was there, even used to lease out movie theaters to host classes!).

Of course, some of the reasons aren't so justifiable. University presidents and other administrators make huge salaries, for example. But I have a hard time faulting the students for that; if anything, it makes me want to give more so the students have more to work with.

Also, on a related note, depending on the school, you often can give your money to very specific funds; for example, at USF I have the option of giving my money exclusively to a scholarship fund, helping students who otherwise wouldn't be able to afford those obscene tuition rates get a college education. I don't, because what I am interested in is helping the school come closer to opening a school of journalism, because it's a subject that is undervalued and lost in the shuffle in their mass comm school, where often times the public relations students seem to be a priority.

I think many charities offer a lot of the same ethical dilemmas you encounter with public schools, so I hope you do your research there.

While they do get plenty of tax money, it is nowhere near what it costs to run a University. In most states, Universities have gone from state run to state supported as much less than half of their funding is tax money.

And as far as administrators go, we at K-State have the distinction of our Prez being 10th out of 12 in salary in the Big 12.

One final thought. As far as places for tax money to go, higher ed is one of the better places.

I flunked out of college so I haven't given them a red cent - but I still cheer for the sports teams. I give a nominal amount to my old high school. I give a lot to my children's school.

You must be related to me; I did the exact same thing for UCR. (Mostly I wanted to only pay once, but also to get the lifetime ability to check out books from any UC library - that doesn't do me much good NOW, but oh well.)

Caller ID allows me to skip the Alumni Association calls, but they NEVER talk to the machine. They were starting to call with almost daily frequency, so I sent them a nasty email with some pretty strong hints. That'll probably tide me over until they start up again next year.

Of the three colleges I've attended: if I had been giving any money to Gallaudet University, they'd have lost it after that crap over Fernandes earlier this year. New York University does not need my money. Queens College GSLIS probably does, and I will send them something once I finally land an actual job (as opposed to contract work).

I paid for a year's alumni mostly to keep that access to online article databases. Turns out I can get almost all of them (and the ones I really wanted anyway) from the public library system here, so I doubt I'll renew.

I also refused to contribute to the Class gift or whatever it was, because it was a big sign for the new athletic center. I never used the athletic center, I didn't have any ties to the sports and I really didn't think a sign was really going to do a whole lot for the school.

Someone donated a whole lot of trade paperbacks to the library which all had "donated by" in them. Something like that is more the type of thing I'd want to do-- something that was going to be appreciated by individuals, not the faceless, meaningless masses.

I don't think I've ever posted as a board where anyone was capable of donating to their school...

While I can't now since I'm only 23, I'll certainly give whatever I can to my community college once my bank account and marriage is in order. If it wasn't for them taking me in for next to nothing when I was living on my own... I was close to getting into stripping and/or porn, and I'd be flipping burgers or be dead right now.

Plus, after I graduated I got a solid job at the school, and a teacher there gave me the opportunity for the job I have currently, which I probably don't even deserve yet. So, yeah, I'm very grateful and I'm always for schools that give people chances in life.
