As a Candian, I often wondered about this day, known as the biggest shopping day in the USA. Well, since I'm working in Salt Lake until December, I had the chance to experince it for the first time.

I was told to avoid Wal-Mart and other big box stores, as they would be busy busy insane busy. And all I want is a Nintendo Wii.

Woke up early, around 6am, and started and started out. In SLC there's this thing called the Gateway, which is essentially a village of stores. A large village. More like a town, actually.

Although it was 25 degrees, people were still walking around waiting for stores to open (being Canadian, even one with a disease effected by temperature, I felt I had a distinct advantage in this climate =)

I started staking out the EB Games by the hotel I'm staying at. Went there at 6:15am or so. Walked around the other stores, camr back half hour later, and saw that one person was waiting by the store. So went back, 7am store opened.....and they had two Wii's. Good thing, or else they're had been be some trouble =)

So I picked up the Wii and Zelda: Twilight Princess.

And that's all I got, and that's all I am doing. Ok, so it wasn't sounding too exciting, but it was for me! I GOT M'WII!!! Anyone else do some "wanting/needing" shopping?

My PS2's RF adaptor chose this perfectly inopportune time to crap out (thanks again, MadCatz...), so I'll be forced to jump into the fray. I'll try my hand at Radio Shack first, but failing that I'll be forced to go to a Best Buy or Circuit City.

Had to kill time wandering around during work today, so popped into a deserted FYE nearby and picked up the AWA DVD. Considering the season, there had better be Turkey on a Pole included.

Thanks to my years (and years...) of retail experience, I've come away with one rule about the 'Black Friday'.

Avoid any and all retail stores like it's a zombie infestation going on.

I have this 'thing' where I hate people, and people are the worst when they go shopping for shit as cheap as possible and then they get all pissed off when they find out Store X only got 10 copies of something they wanted on sale and they're not getting a rain check for it because the sale was ONLY for that day and when you sell all you are given, then that's too bad for you cause you should have gotten up earlier or what not. but the point is that I made a rule that I'd work any day of the year, Christmas, New Years, any day except three... My Birthday, The day after Thanksgiving and the day after Christmas.

On these days (Except my Birthday...) I stay indoors and avoid stores at all cost.

I think it was ABC News.com that had a story about how Black Friday isn't really the heaviest shopping day of the year (12/23 is), but that's like comparing a ton of feathers to a ton of bricks. I ran out looking for a Gamecube Memory card this morning. I braved Best Buy. Its not that bad if you know exactly what you are looking for and you can just dodge the throngs of people clogging the isles. Still, avoid it if you can.

Edit: Yes, it was Abcnews (abcnews.go.com), and they say that its either 12/23 or the last Saturday before Christmas.

The difference between the day after Thanksgiving shoppers and the day or 2 before X-Mas shoppers is that the Thanksgiving shopper is generally going to go to multiple stores looking for different items/sizes etc., while the day before X-Mas shopper is usually the person coughguycough who is the 'Oh Fuck, X-Mas is in a day or 2 and I haven't bought anything yet so I'll buy the first thing that doesn't look like complete shit' shopper. Thus, the day after Thanksgiving shopper is in stores all day and thus leads to an increased amount of people in an area for a long period of time, while the day before X-Mas shopper hopes to be back in the car while it feels like the heater is still on.

I hit a strip mall clothing store at around 8:30 a.m. and then did two Toys 'R Us', two Comic Book Shops, Best Buy and a Cocounts stretching across Louisville, KY before 1pm.

Didn't have any problem at the "big box" stores finding what I wanted (since it wasnt' a Wii, PS3 or dirt cheap we only got 10 of them thingies).

I waited the longest at the 2nd TRU (just shy of an hour) because they started the line in the rear of the store and it snaked around the perimiter only to break right before the cash registers so incoming customers could get into the store. OF COURSE, there were people gleefully breaking line when the person shepherding the line didn't pay enough attention.

I did try to hit CompUSA for one of the cheap routers on Thursday night but knew I wouldn't get one when I saw the size of the crowd and went home, and missed out on the $100 X-Box 360 core system on Amazon (by mere seconds I'm sure ;-))

Overall, not a bad experience. I finished off some things I was looking for (Marvel Legends figures) plus bought some neat items for the kids.

The REAL fun for me is when Black Friday stretches to Mid-Ohio-Con Saturday in Columbus, OH as I fill holes in the 'ol comic collection.

I was at my mall job at 4am this morning. The mall opened at 6am and there were mobs of people at the anchor stores well before that.

I was sooooo glad to get the hell out of there this afternoon.

Snopes.com has a good explanation of that urban legend. Some of my friends love shopping on this day for that specific reason because they love to people watch. You couldn't pay me enough to join them.

The Daughter and I traditionally go out and look for people fighting over care bears or something. We took one of her friends with us - and she was fascinated.

we buy nothing, but take pics. Out at 4:30, back by 8:30. Entertaining.

We started at Target at 7am. Electronics was a madhouse. Most of the other stuff we wanted was still available. Also hit up Michael's, Mervyn's, Macy's, Hot Topic, Circuit City (pretty cleaned out by the time I walked in), and Home Depot (for X-mas decorations).

All in all, it was successful and the gifts:selfish purchase ratio was way up from previous years.

The things that seemed really weird about Black Friday were the stores that gave away tickets to customers who lined up early for certain sale items. My dad was up at Best Buy at 4AM to get in line for the 8" portable DVD player. He called me around 4:30 and said he was leaving because they were out of tickets. I had to get to Best Buy anyway, so around 6:30 I walked in and there was a pallet of the DVD players in the middle of a rear aisle. Waited in line for almost an hour, but for $70, it was worth it - also, thanks to the people who found the map someone had drawn to show how the wait line would move and began acting out extravagant pirate scenes.

Same thing happened at Sears. They had the 19.2V drill for $40, advertised as being in 'limited quantities' - I think max 40 a store? Yet when I got there, they had at least 100 of them in the pile and on the shelves, and there were many people walking around with the drill as well. So with the early bird coupon, I got the drill for $30 plus tax. Do they usually do the ticket/limited quantities thing to create the mad rush?

I've been doing Black Friday at Best Buy for the past 5 years or so. I live in a smallish city, so I've never gotten there more than 3 hours before the store opened, and that would usually place me in the first 20 or so customers. However, this year was the first year I wanted one of the front-page "doorbuster" items (32" LCD television for $479.99), so I decided to get there extra early.

The plan was to get in line around 9:00p and hope I was first. I camped out 35 hours for the PS3 and 10 hours for the Wii, so I figured waiting 8 hours for Black Friday would be a walk in the park. I got a little impatient after dinner and decided to get to Best Buy at 8:30p. Got there, thinking I would SURELY be first in line, and tada - already 40+ people in line. Best Buy said there would only be 15 of the TV that I wanted, so I didn't even bother asking who was there for what.

I'm guessing that the increasing marketing emphasis on Black Friday as an event, in addition to the very recent hype around people camping out at stores for the PS3 and the Wii, made it nearly impossible for people (even in a city as small as mine) to get what they wanted at the big box stores without waiting outside for 12+ hours. Sad times.

No fear Cyber Monday is here!

Might be able to find the nearly same deal with delivery before the end of the season.

Exceptions...PS3 and Wii. I've heard rumor of online PS3 being astronomical.

Bet no one can top this. After dropping my car off for service, walked to Old Navy. On the way from there to Panera for lunch, I walked into a tree branch and scratched my cornea. There's one way to avoid the rush.

I hit Best Buy for DVDs - Entourage, S.2 - $15, Arrested Development S3 - $10, silly chick flicks for gifts - $5. They sold out of the cheap flash drive.

I also hit Toys R Us for the hot toys - they sold out of the new Elmo, the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, and the $10 bouncing Tigger. They had lots of Little Mermaid stuff on sale, but I couldn't get just one Superman figure any size for under $20.

In a surprise, Borders has every season of Buffy for $20 each. So instead of further shopping I read the new Secret Wars TPB at Borders.

My friend's son wanted an mp3 player, and Sears had one on the morning of Black Friday for $29.99 with a $10 rebate offer. So we decided to brave the crowds and lack of sleep and head to Sears when it opened.

We got on line about 4:50 and someone behind us was speculating about whether there were 200 people ahead of us. Turns out the first 200 people get $10 gift cards--I had no idea! So our actual cost for the mp3 player was about 12 bucks including tax. Moreover, we used the other gift card to get a nice belt for me cheap.

BTW, the mp3 player was the last one on the shelf--and that was at *5:07AM*. I can't say that they didn't have more that they put out afterward, but it sure looked like it was basically a scam to get people in the door.

Then we headed over to Target and got on line there--we were looking for a season of the Simpsons on DVD for another gift. We picked that up and then helped the woman who had been on line behind us find what she was looking for. Pretty productive morning, I guess. Then went home and slept 'til 3PM. B^)

No offense to anyone trying to stretch a buck but our family has avoided this like the plague for years. There are just too many whack jobs out there who are rude, insensitive, boorish, and even scary. Good grief, it's just stuff and mostly stuff you don't even need. Throw in all the bait and switch, etc. and I don't get it. I know some get a kick out of the battle for bargains and God love you.

We wait and have found better bargains (for what we want) about two weeks before Christmas.

And since our daughter is a competitive riding horsenut, we seldom have to deal with crowds buying a horse or saddle.

I wnet to Kohl's last night for clothes and they were still giving stuff away with crazy discounts.

I will never go shoppingon this weekend. Since it was/is usually nice this time of year, I head outdoors and decorate the house for Christmas.

And since I have 4 kids ranging from 2 to 8 year olds, I would much rahter shop online and save myself the headaches.

My mon, however, linves fo rthis day and calls me when she gets home to tell me what she got and how mch she saved. She then spends the rest of the weekend trying to get caught up on sleep (she is 68). The funny thing is, she COULD pay full proce but she has always loved the hunt for a great sale.
