WOW! Just... WOW!

Morneau with the upset of the year, easily. He was seen in most circles outside Minnesota as a potential fourth-place finisher. In Minnesota, everyone thought he would get second.

I love this, but I almost feel Mauer deserves it more. Either way, this is great news!

I'm as much of a Yankee-hater as the next guy, but I've got to admit that Jeter was robbed. But then again, when you play with eight other All-Stars in the lineup, it doesn't bode well for your chances.

"That's the thing: Maybe he'll be up and down this season, but when he's up, is there another center in the league quite like him? He protects the rim, passes out of double teams, has great hands around the basket, up-fakes on his jump-hooks, rebounds in traffic, even has a motor that keeps going and going (unlike a stiff like Eddy Curry). I'm not sure what's missing here. This is stunning. This is startling. There's almost no precedent for it. Just what the Lakers needed: More obscenely good luck. Meanwhile, I have to watch Al Jefferson whip jump-hooks off the front of the rim for the third straight season. I will now pour scalding hot water down my pants."

I think Morneau is a great choice and should be the winner. If you look at his starts compared to the Twins record and every time Morneau got hot the Twins went on one of thier streaks. While Mauer had a great season and Cuddyer is very underrated it seemed like Morneau was the one who was the difference between winning and losing.

Morneau ended up with very good stats, but he really only had 2 stellar months (June - July), 3 average months (May, August, September) and one terrible month (April).

To me, it is very similar to Webb getting the Cy Young. He had the best part of a season from a bunch of candidates who ended up with similar stats.

It didn't seem to hurt A-Rod last year.

Jeter winning the MVP this season would've been like one of those years where the Oscar goes to someone who's been nominated a few times before, and who everyone says "Hmm, you know, this guy SHOULD have an Oscar, why doesn't he?" The fact that he plays in New York and has a million sportswriters and the Fox baseball team pimping him day in and day out only helps his factor.

My question is, why Jeter? Why him and not, say, Johnny Damon or Jason Giambi or (the guy who's really been the most valuable Yankee for the last decade) Mariano Rivera as the glue that held the Yankees together? Actually, if Jeter is supposed to be this great clubhouse leader, when why did he 'allow' the ongoing A-Rod controversy to overwhelm New York's season?

You can make a better case for Morneau, Santana or Mauer because without any of those three guys, the Twins aren't even a .500 team, let alone a division champ. Without Jeter, the Yankees still, at worst, win the wild card.

I saw somewhere that Justin Morneau is Canadian, that means we've had Canadian MVPs in the Basketball, Hockey, and Baseball this year. They're taking over.

I also just heard on the radio that the combined salaries of this year's MVPs < Julio Mateo's salary.

In hindsight, this could have been the most successful season the Twins have had - even given their two World Series wins.

Morneau wins MVP, Santana the Cy Young, Gardenhire finishes 2nd for Manager of the Year, Mauer wins the batting title, Liriano was en route to Rookie of the Year, and they won the division. Compared to back in `87 and `91 when there were only two playoff teams from each league, you have to admire the team Minnesota has built up from years of great drafting, scouting, and trades.

I see Santana being traded either next year or in the next three. He's a free agent next November, and like all of their superstars they couldn't afford to keep, they'll likely get two or three legit long-term stars out of any trade for him. They have a knack for knowing when a player has peaked and the time is right to cut ties. Examples: Knoblauch, Aguilera, Brunansky, Guardado, Milton, Koskie, Guzman, Mays, Hawkins, Lawton, etc.

The only true exception is David Ortiz, who was so injury-ridden in his last year in Minnesota, that it seemed like a kinda smart idea at the time to let him go. And possibly Pierzynski, who has improved a bit since leaving MN, but couldn't stay with Mauer ready to take his spot.

Talk is, the Twins want to sign up Morneau, Mauer, and Cuddyer before Santana, who they realistically can't afford with the first two signed up long-term.

edit: I stand corrected on the length of Santana's contract.

With Sheffield out, Matsui out, Cano out for six weeks or so, Rodriguez not hitting in the clutch at all, this team MAY have won 87 games. Obviously, Morneau had Jeter beat in the two "sexy" statistics, homers and ribbies. Jeter had 24 more hits, 2 more doubles, 2 more triples, 16 more walks, 31 more steals, 23 points higher in BA, 42 points higher in OBP, and 21 more runs scored. Plus, he played a Gold Glove-winning shortstop, and put up some great offensive numbers from the two-hole. If you'd like to say that Jeter was even less valuable than Mariano, I'd agree to a point, because the Yanks have zero pennants without him. That situation would be similar to saying that Morneau wasn't the most valuable guy on his team, either. What is left out with the trash is that a guy who seems to be a pretty decent guy, a guy who seems to work his butt off and set an example not only for his team, but for his fans and kids everywhere, is just plain second-rate, because he makes an obscene amount of money for a team that spends an obscene amount of money, has been embraced completely by a huge fan base, and dates some of the hottest chicks in the world. While I think he left Rodriguez to twist in the wind, I'd have a hard time believing that he could have done much to help Rodriguez put up better numbers.

Everyone's senile grandmother knew that Jeter would have a comment at the ready which basically states, "Justin Morneau is a great guy, great player, and totally deserving, blah blah blah, rings are more important, yadda yadda, individual awards are not important." I take that with a grain of salt, not because I don't think he truly means it, but because this was arguably his best shot thus far at the MVP, and like everyone else, he has to have SOME pride.

Joe Cowley, beat-writer at The Chicago Sun-Times, threw Jeter a 6th place vote. I don't get it, myself, and on the 11/21 Mike & the Mad Dog show on 660 WFAN/NY, he didn't actually offer much of a sound defense for his vote (wfan.com).

Problem is, as is pointed out every year, the MVP award is not for the Player of the Year (which Pujols would have won in the NL, and probably Mauer or Jeter in the AL). It's for MVP. And without Morneau, the Twins would not have hit a hot streak. There were other good players on the Twins, but Morneau was the difference maker.

I'd have put Jeter over Morneau, but I'd have put Mauer over either of the two. People have complained about Jeter getting one sixth place vote, which was bad but hardly indefensible. What was indefensible is that only 12 of the 28 voters put Mauer sixth or higher, including 5 of the remaining 12 who left him completely off the ballot despite the fact that Mauer had a better season offensively and defensively than either Jeter or Morneau. Mauer was the one who got robbed.

Not going to argue about the voting, but I heard somewhere that while Jeter had 8 All-Stars, Morneau "carried" the Twins all year. Basically saying Twins had nothing without Morneau while they only had the best catcher, best starting pitcher, and best closer.

It's not that simple. Everyone knows they're full of talent. But that talent was clearly missing one piece of the puzzle. They didn't start winning until Morneau finally got hot and put them over the top night after night. His numbers cooled off toward the end of the season, but his hits were still coming at the right time, leading the Twins to many comeback wins. Numbers aren't always everything.

But that said, I still think Mauer was the Player of the Year. Morneau was just the Most Valuable Player - the same way Jeter was valuable to the Yankees. Had the Yankees surmounted incredible odds to race back from so many games behind Detroit at the All-Star break in order to win their division (as the Twins did), Jeter may have gotten the extra votes that went to Morneau.

All this proves is that baseball needs to also have a Player of the Year award, which Jeter wouldn't have even been in the running for. And I'm a diehard Yankees fan, but I'm not biased. Mauer, Ortiz, Pujols, and Howard would have been up for Player of the Year.

It's not BEST player. That's where the Gold Glove goes to. It's MOST VALUABLE. It's the guy who really made a key difference in the way his team played.

As much as I love the Yankees, I'm not going to argue about Morneau winning it. He was voted to be the most valuable to his team, all things considered.

Uh, what? Gold Glove goes to "guy we think fields the best, mostly whoever we thought was best last year"

It's not BEST player. It's MOST VALUABLE.

Is it actually on the ballot that Most Valuable can't mean Best Player?

It seems to me that the BBWAA leaves the criteria for MVP completely up to the individual voters, so the person who votes for "best player in the league" is just as correct as the person who votes for "guy with most RBIs on team closest to making/not-making playoffs."

I'm not trying to take a side - I'm more of the opinion "just because baseball writers say it, doesn't mean I have to care."

off topic: the BBWAA site is so bad.
