To an eight year, 136 million dollar contract. (sports.espn.go.com)

I like it, but I don't know how much I like it. At least it shows they're serious about maybe trying to win in the near future, hopefully, they get a couple of pitchers without a disastrous arm history.

I would have loved to have a guy like Soriano taking over at second for the Red Sox (or even in center field), but...not at that kind of money or long-term commitment.

Enjoy the next 8 years, Cub fans!

Yeah, the money doesn't bother me as much as the eight years does, and from what I read at the Trib website, they signed him to be the center fielder, so yay for Matt Murton.

Hey, I think the Cubs may actually be SERIOUS this time about winning.

I'm personally bummed about this news as an Angels fan, since Ramirez and Soriano were at the top of our wishlist for the offseason and both have been scooped up by the Cubbies. Now who's left?

The Cubs are a decent pitcher away from coming out the big winners this offseason.

"That's the thing: Maybe he'll be up and down this season, but when he's up, is there another center in the league quite like him? He protects the rim, passes out of double teams, has great hands around the basket, up-fakes on his jump-hooks, rebounds in traffic, even has a motor that keeps going and going (unlike a stiff like Eddy Curry). I'm not sure what's missing here. This is stunning. This is startling. There's almost no precedent for it. Just what the Lakers needed: More obscenely good luck. Meanwhile, I have to watch Al Jefferson whip jump-hooks off the front of the rim for the third straight season. I will now pour scalding hot water down my pants."

Sweet Lou is smiling.

Good pick up, the guy has tremendous potential. He improved as the season went on in the OF, and he obviously has the bat.

My God. Frickin' Finally!

How many times have the Cubs not picked up a decent player available in the off season for a crap player. I applaud this effort even if the guy cathes the curse, and never hits above 200 again.

Now, Uncle Tribune, can we have a throwing man, pretty please?

Is he good enough to play center field? I know from what I saw he wasn't that great in left, although it looked like he had a pretty good arm (22 assists last year). With him, Jones, and Murton in the OF, I don't know how good their defense will be. But he does give a good bat at the top of the lineup. Looks like another good move by the Cubs.

With Lee, Soriano and Ramirez, the Cubs are returning to their 12-11, let the drunks enjoy seeing runs scored ways. It'll help keep the seats being sold, will bring eyeballs to WGN, and will leave the Cubs at the 83-85 win region, which is good enough to contend, but probably not good enough to win. Only times the Cubs have had any chance are those rare instances when those guys who throw the ball at the opposing batter are good. But, at least the Cubs can't cry poverty now.
And, it will be very interesting to see Lou's reaction the first time Soriano loafs it down the 1st base line.

I wouldn't be worried about the 8 years, how many players actually stay in one place for their entire contract these days? If the Cubs don't want him in three years someone else will take him off their hands.

As a fan of the 3rd place team in town whose idea of big offseason moves is getting David Aardsma I am envious of the Cubs who appear to at least be trying, while my GM slowly seems to morph into Gollum sitting in his cave looking at the 2005 WS trophy and muttering about his Precious.

Methinks the Cubs are about to relegate the Sox back to afterthought status in Chicago. Of course, last I heard they were talking about Gil Meche as the answer for the Cubs rotation, so I could be premature on that.

Between him and Aramis Ramirez, Sweet Lou may just have a heart attack at some point this year.

The thing I didn't really get until I saw Sports Centre - Soriano is 30.
An 8 year contract for a 30 year old just seems crazy.
I know guys can produce in their mid to late 30s, but it sure seems like a stretch.

I've heard reports that the last two years are option years, but I haven't heard that confirmed.

Mike and Mike on ESPN this morning had Buster Olney on, who reported that the Cubs are trying to sign Cliff Floyd. Now Jones, Soriano, and Floyd in the outfield...probably not a pitcher's nocturnal emission...

Floyd is Hendry's white whale. I have no idea why at this point, and he really shouldn't be counted on to be an everyday player. I hope they don't trade Murton, because he'll get plenty of time if he's around.

The Daily Herald goes counter to most reports and says Soriano will actually be playing Right, with Jacque either gone or center. Jacque in Center would actually be worse.
