Damn you, cliffhanger! Three months never seemed so long...
A good episode to end the 'first half' of the season on, though I wish the other characters besides Jack/Kate/Sawyer could've gotten more screen time. Kate's backstory and her relationship with Mars gets more interesting each time.
"I don't know what is more disquieting -- the fact that the rest of the statue is missing, or that it has four toes."
1) Locke said they were going to bury Eko right there. Desmond's response: "We are?" From anyone else I would assume that this was merely an expression of surprise. From Desmond, I feel like there's at least some chance that he's seen into the future and for some reason the middle of the woods is NOT Eko's final resting place.
2) After pointing the gun at Ben, Jack makes him give his word that if Jack does the surgery, he'll "get off this island." Ben quickly agrees. All of the shenanigans that happened afterwards notwithstanding, couldn't Ben send Jack back to his original island and still keep his word? Ben and the Others could perhaps even stay on the second island permanently to avoid retribution. Then again, I'm not so sure this whole concept of a second island is on the up-and-up.
3) For the life of me I can't figure out the significance of the words on Eko's scripture stick that caught Locke's eyes. Perhaps Locke & friends will take a journey to the far north end of the island and discover the second island? Who knows. I half expected him to look up into the sky right then and there and discover something, but I guess we'll have to wait THREE FREAKIN' MONTHS to find out.
4) Kate is bad. Bad bad bad news bears. I've started to come to like her (or at least tolerate her) over the past several dozen episodes, but this episode reminds me of why I hated her way back in season 1.
5) To paraphrase: "Shepherd isn't on Jacob's list anyway." Jacob?! Does Ben have a boss himself? Or perhaps, DID Ben have a boss? My, my, my.
6) Almost forgot! I just KNEW they couldn't kill Sawyer right now (mostly because the producers said the next two big bombs of the season were coming after the hiatus), but my heart was racing and my jaw was on the ground when they took Sawyer out of the cage and held a gun to his head. And when that Other (can't remember his name for the life of me) said, "This one is for Colleen," I jumped out of my seat. That's one of the benefits (the ONLY benefit?) of LOST having the willingness to kill off main characters: you just never know who might go next!
Ah, nuts. That's all I can remember for now. I know they've got me hooked and I'm already itching for the next episode. I just hope that they were able to do a little of the same for some of the more casual/cynical viewers out there in TV land.

I thought the same thing because at this point only Sawyer and Kate know that there are two islands, not Jack. So when Ben promised to get him off the island I thought he would just send him back to the first island.
However, I think the Others live on that island too. I do believe there are two seperate islands but that the island Kate/Jack/Sawyer are on is there just to hold them and build whatever it is they're building. But I think their little village is back on the original island. After all in the fist episode this season Ben tells Ethan if he runs he can catch up to the crashed airplane in one hour but how could he get there in one hour if it's a seperate island? Also in tonight's episode Danny tells Ben that he took that girl home. That to me sounded like their home was somewhere other than the island they were currently on.
Tonight was supposed to solve Kate/Jack/Sawyer but I'm not sure it did. I mean I know Sawyer and Kate hooked up and everything but after Jack heroics at the end is Kate just concerned as a friend or more than that? Too bad Nathan Fillion was a one time deal, he'd kick Jack and Sawyer's ass.
Ah, Sawyer. Now he has another girl he can say "I screwed her!" about. The one he really wanted.
I always liked Kate, always a fan since the pilot but I realized last night if they shot her in the head and left her for dead, I wouldn't be upset. Nobody does what she did to Nathan Fillion, damn it.
Need more Juliet. Want Ben to die very, very badly. February seems so far away.
No Nathan Fillion cameo is complete without a pratfall! (Its a shame that they didn't have Kate name herself Saffron, though...)
I have to admit, during the last five minutes, when Pickett went out to get Sawyer during the surgery, I could not sit down. In the back of my head, I'm thinking "They can't kill Sawyer... they can't kill Sawyer", but I know they wanted to go out on a big cliffhanger, and I fully expected the show to end with a shot of Kate's face while you heard a gunshot and they would leave it unclear as to whether or not Sawyer was shot. I know Sawyer's a popular character, but they've still got too many people on this show to follow. I especially thought that him sleeping with Kate would be a major sign that someone was about to die. (Remember, Ana Lucia died after sleeping with Sawyer, and Shannon died after sleeping with Sayid.)
I liked how Jack made the decision to perform the surgery after seeing Sawyer and Kate is their post-coital cuddle. Ben's statement about how Jack will be taken off this island and returned home was awesome. I'm with StingArmy and Quezzy: Ben was going to send him back to his precious beach camp.
Part of me still wants to think that everything that has happened in front of Jack, Kate, and Sawyer has been done for their viewing enjoyment, including Juliet's flashcards and the whole Alex-Carl soap opera, even if it seems to make no sense as far as what the Other's real intentions might be.
What was Ben saying about Alex just before the operation? That she was taken home, and he'll see her on the other side? I think those were two independent statements, but part of me got the feeling that he was implying they had her killed, which, if so, would suck, as one of the moments this show has been (slowly) building to is the reunion of Alex and Rousseau.
I hope Ben doesn't die, as I love his character's creepy nature, but I think that the story would probably be more interesting. It'd be hysterical if after Jack pulls this "cut your kidney-sack" stunt, that when he goes to sew it up he screws up and Ben dies anyway.
I wish I didn't have to wait until February. If only I could freeze myself, and then wake up in 13 weeks...
You believe me, don't you? Please believe what I just said...
All I kept thinking in the last 5 minutes was, I can't believe that I have to wait 3 months....3 MONTHS!!
For a second there, I thought that they might actually shoot Sawyer. Really glad that they didn't because the 3 of them will eventually get out of there and I'm dying to see that dynamic.I'm pretty sure Sawyer will love rubbing his relationship with Kate in Jack's face.
Ok, so is Jack just telling Kate to run, or is Sawyer allowed to go too? Can she quit yelling and just explain to Jack what's up with regards to Sawyer's situation?

No, the two statements were independent. Alex was taken home, presumably to the other island. The "See you on the other side." was referring to seeing Jack and Juliette when he wakes up from the surgery. Or in the next life, whichever.
I figured there'd be a cliffhanger, but I guess I thought there'd be a nugget of *something* explained as a reward of sorts. The lack of any sort of explanation of anything kinda killed this episode for me.

This intrigued me, and made me wonder, "Hmm, maybe there was something to John Locke being who Ben originally came to get." To me, Ben is the most riveting character on the show, because it always feels that something will either happen or be revealed when he opens up his pie-hole. Now, I do wonder if Jack was set up to hear the voice over the intercom telling him to "check the door", which leads him to the monitors and a glimpse of "yes, Kate and Sawyer just did the nasty." I had a thought that Ben would record them and wheel the tv into Jack's space for him to watch. I liked hearing Jack tell them that he wouldn't operate on Ben, didn't like him deciding to do it, but liked him doing what he did during the surgery - Stone Cold Shepard rawks!
I was also wondering why Jack would trust them at all to "send him home". The only possible reason is that he remembers seeing Michael and Walt putter away from the dock, and he hasn't seen or heard from them since....although I guess its only been six days since.
Lord loves a workin' man. Don't trust whitey. See a doctor and get rid of it.
I can't believe we haven't heard anything about those guys from the last scene of the season two finale, where they answered the phone (the guy that kinda looked like Jack). I know there are so many mysteries that haven't been adressed yet, but I would've thought this would've been mentioned by now.
I started watching the episode here at work (thank you ABC.com) at 7:45am and thanks to meetings, phone calls & actual work - I just finished.
What made the final scene even more riveting for me was that I had the countodown clock in the corner telling me how much time was left in the episode. I forgot they counted the time for the credits so i actually expected more. I was damn sure that Sawyer was going to get popped and I don't think that he is out of the woods yet anyway. No way Danny lets Sawyer go - now or in February - one character will die at the hands of the other.
I love Kate - her character can really cause 180 degree reactions in people - is she bad news ? Hell yeah. Is she the type of woman I dated in the late 80's ? Hell yeah. I guess this leaves us with one more potential flashback for Kate to fill in her whole story line.
Interesting that Desmond hasn't foreseen the future in the last 2 episodes - maybe he needs some heroin, paints & an easel.
I am still pissed that Mr. Eko is dead. There was more for him to do, more for us to know, more of the church to be built. He did however point the way for Locke and once the story starts up again it should be interesting to follow Locke's trek north.
Once again they were wearing scrubs from the Hydra but which hatch was that one and have we actually been in it ?
The village is definitely on the Big Island based on Ben's opening episode comments about the plane crash just like Quezzy pointed out earlier in the thread. But what are they doing there ? Are the other people cracking and hauling rocks also prisoners or are they actually "others" and it is all just another ruse ?
Ben won't die. At least not now. His character is way to compelling and way to important to the current main storyline. Everyone who has died so far was in a sub-plot that while adding to the storyline, never drove it. I love Ben's deadpan stares - they say so much with so little. I still get a vibe that Ben & Juliet are brother & sister and I still can't point out a specific reason why.
I knew I recognized Nathan Fillion but I couldn't place where until I started to see the Nathan-Love here and then put it together. LOST does seem to get some great ancillary characters for the flashback roles.
If you are Emilie de Ravin - are you just cashing checks now and reading scripts for the a sequel to the Hills Have Eyes ? What a waste of a character.
Where are the children ? Did that storyline get dropped when Walt sailed away ? I am not letting this one go.
Just like geemoney said - where are the guys in the arctic (or antarctic) who were tracking the magnetic anomaly ? Not even a 10 second scene in any of the first 6 episodes ?
and what about Eye Patch ?
At least the first group of LOST action figures is now for sale so fans can play LOST during the 13 week hiatus.....

According to interviews, all these three plots will be advanced in the second half, as well as what actually happened when the hatch went boom. (Wonder if there was any significance to Locke saying it exploded last night, since they've been saying implode for some reason.)
I think they should've treated it like 24 and just gone from January to May. I think the better thing to do is just to watch 'em all back to back on DVD, because the little danging plots don't bug you as much when it's just been a couple discs since they got around to following them up, rather than months. I don't know how you do that and stay free of spoilers - it didn't work for me with this show last year, I know.
Does "new episodes every Wednesday" mean they won't start the next string with a recap episode? Because I really doubt that. (Maybe it'll be on Saturday instead!)
I don't get why Sawyer is being such a defeatist. Yeah, they're apparently on another island. But there must be a way to get from one island to the other. Like, say, a boat. So why does Sawyer find it preferable to sit in a cage all day rather than heading down to the beach and seeing what's up? What has he got to lose?

Not only did Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse say those three plots would be in the second half but they were very clear that we would get a REALLY good idea what happened to the children, the eye patch guy would be VERY prominent in the second half, and the people outside the island would be the main plot for the second half. So it's not like we're just going to get little brief glimpses of them but more likely entire episodes about them. Also they confirm that we will find out how Locke got in a wheel chair and they say Michael will most likely not be back this season, but will be back in the future.
Ok, I've just completed marathon viewings of Seasons 1 and 2 and got myself caught up with Season 3.....just in time to wait 3 months for a new episode. My timing sucks.
But I have some question. 1) Is it safe to assume that Ben is the husband of the french woman? If so, then that makes the second half of season 2 real interesting. I know there was talk that the Others clearly wanted the button to not be pushed, and it seems the french woman helped them with that goal. Also fitting this theory is that Claire was attacked by her and the Others, and that's too big of a coincidence for me (and Locke)
2) Way back in Season 1, I think it was the 4th episode, we saw Locke get confronted by something. We've been led to believe it was the black smoke that Mr. Eko saw (same camera angle, etc). Did we ever see this light that Locke spoke of last episode?
3) Anyone else think this was the desired end game between Juliet and Ben all along? If the tumor was that advanced, then Juliet didn't need to tip her hand to Jack, she just needed to stick to the original plan, which wouldn't have caused the surgery to happen in time. Only problem with this theory is that we say Ben ask if he was out of the book club at the beginning of the season, hinting at some actual tension between these two.
4) I know the purgatory theory seems to be the most common one regarding what this island is. Any ideas how to incorporate the men we saw at the end of the second season into this theory? Or does their existence mean that theory is not scrapped, and a new one is needed?
Sorry for all the questions, or if any or all of this has been covered elsewhere.
edit: Sorry for any spelling errors, can't get spell check to work right now.
(edited by chazworthington on 10.11.06 1108) Actuaries do it continuously and discreetly
1) Ben is most likely not the husband of the French woman. He's previously said to Jack "I've lived on this island my whole life." (which can be nitpicked as a lie, since he spent a week living in the hatch on the main island, and he made that statement on the 'alcatraz' island, but I think the intended point was that if Ben wasn't born on the island(s), he's at least been there since he was very young). Rousseau said that she shot and killed her husband when he became sick, and they had traveled there together as part of the expedition. I don't think there's much evidence to this point that Rousseau is a fraud and really in line with the Others (although there's always the possibility), as everything that's happened with her can be taken at face value (for example, her coincidental role in Claire's escape in season 1). The real question is what is the nature of Alex's relationship with Ben, as they both asked about each other in the last episode.
2. We did not see the light that John spoke of. However, John does seem to realize that it is the smoke monster, since he seemed willing to let it drag him underground in the season one finale. (I wonder if Eko's "you're next", means that we'll find out where the smoke monster wanted to take him later this season.)
3. Part of me wants to think that the Other's have some VERY complicated plan that involved them knowing that Colleen would be shot (and Pickett's subsequent role) and everything that has unfolded thus far has gone as planned. But the more I think about it, the less that makes sense. Ben approached Jack and told him explicitly they had a plan and that it was shot to hell once Jack saw the x-rays. Then, when Juliet went to get Kate to bring her to convince Jack, as she's talking to Pickett, you can (barely) hear her say to him that the timetables been moved up, and he complains that he thought he had two weeks. (which is the same about of time that you'll recall Ben told Kate would be tough for her.) Its entirely possible that a) there's some other event or reason that is causing the time table to be moved up and it just happens to coincide with Jack seeing the x-rays, or b) the Others are staging all of this as part of the ongoing mindfuck for their captives. But that wouldn't make sense, as a) one would think that after monitoring the castaways for two months, they'd realize that no one ever tells anyone about anything, and b) their dialogue was so faint that it was hard for listener, let alone Kate or Sawyer to possibly hear them. Its the same line of thinking that relates to whether Juliet and Ben's dialogue at Colleen's funeral was intended for Jack to hear or not. (given that the surgery happened, probably not.) My theory is that these snippets are intentionally injected by the writers for us to put everything together, at least until we can get to an episode where probably Juliet sits down and tells the tale of the Others. Anyway, given that there was talk about needing Sawyer (and the names on Jacob's list), and the fact that Ben felt compelled to earn Sawyer's respect (the only way to earn the respect of a con man is to con him...), there's more going on here than just Ben's tumor. I don't see how this stalemate, and the probable escape of Kate and Sawyer could have been desired.
4) I think the writers have explicitly said the island is not purgatory (at least not literally, anyway), and the fact that we left the island at the end of season two means that it is in fact a real location in the real world, and everyone there is alive (and presumably can be rescued).
You believe me, don't you? Please believe what I just said...
I'd like to see as little as the Antarctic guys and Penelope as possible, frankly. What I loved about the show is that it was entirely contained within this little world of the island(s), aside from the flashbacks. It fueled all sorts of speculation like "Are they the last people on earth? Is the island a Garden of Eden type of place? Does time move at the same rate on the island as it does in the real world? Are they in space?" and whatnot. Actually getting confirmation that there is still some sort of real world was something of a letdown.
Frankly, given the pace at which storylines move on this show, we might not see Penelope again until the last 2-3 episodes of the whole series, when she and Desmond can (hopefully) tearfully reunite.
