Hey guys I'm new here so I thought I'd post a thought,
whats up with wrestling lately?
Why is it so bad?
They have the ability and the roster to put on 5-star matches and great TV every night, why do they feel the need to give us some bastardized version of wrestling circa early nighties?
I don't get it

Mostly because they can. If you knew you could half ass it at your job and STILL get paid, wouldn't you take that option for awhile until you actually had to put forth some effort?

With no competition they have no need or desire to try new/cutting edge things. They don't have to try and "win" wrestling fans by putting on the better show.

Man... if I had to write a post detailing everything that's wrong with wrestling right now, it'd take me about half an hour. But I agree that the lack of competition is an important factor. Doesn't matter how bad RAW is, because there's no Nitro for wrestling fans to turn to. But eventually, if they keep putting out crap, wrestling itself will end up losing a lot of fans, and people will watch other things instead of RAW.

Another reason that hasn't been mentioned yet in this thread is that WWE is trying to milk the old guys for all they're worth while they're still worth something. As has been mentioned elsewhere on Wienerville, this is exactly what WCW tried to get away with for years. While guys like Hogan, Flair, Undertaker, Triple H and Steve Austin are all boring us to death, they're not giving enough time to the exciting young wrestlers like Kurt Angle, Chris Jericho, Booker T and Rob Van Dam. As a result, we do tend to see more two-star snooze-fests than five-star spectacles. And the most boring matches also tend to be the longest matches-- witness the Austin/Undertaker match from Backlash, which has been universally ridiculed.

Another reason is bad writing. Do you remember the promo Triple H cut on Chris Jericho the night after the Royal Rumble? “I'm coming after you, and I'm coming after your belt.” Classic, to the point, and effective. But by the time WrestleMania came along, Triple H was saying things like, “I'm warning you... don't screw with my dog.” The focus was taken away from the wrestlers in the match and shifted to something incredibly stupid. And the big spot everyone was waiting for in the WrestleMania main event was Stephanie getting Pedigreed.

The same thing happened with the Booker T/Edge match. They fought over a shampoo commercial, for the love of God. I believe if the stories focused more on the wrestlers, and less on stupid-ass gimmicky storylines, they'd be more effective at selling the product to people.

All of these things are contributing to the current state of wrestling. But they aren't, by any means, the only things that are making the product suck.

The main problem I always wrestle (no pun intended there) with is the fact that they have to think this is good. I mean there's no way they're putting this on and thinking it sucks. Why would you do that? Someone there thinks this is good and that's scary. But, I STILL don't think this is the worst the WWF/E has been in the last 2 years. I'll take the 2 Man Power Trip month (even though it did lead to Jericho-Benoit tag reign, one of my favorite months), but man, I came real close to not watching then and I'm not there yet.

The short answer is that Wrestling is bad, because Vince McMahon owns the whole thing, and Vince McMahon is an ego fueled idiot, who only works hard at putting on a good product when someone is trying to knock him off his perch. WCW dies, all of (North American) wrestling falls into a blackhole, WCW was the glue that held the wrestling universe together.

But isn't it a bruise to Vince McMahon's ego if his ratings/revenue/perceived power go down?

HEY if WCW was the glue, you may have been sniffing it! AH HA HA

"Wrestling" isn't THAT bad, gang. As is usually the case, it's all a matter of perspective.

Ah, so we've got at least one optimist here. And I suppose you're right, Z-- things could be worse.

We could have Mark Henry as the WWF Champion. (shudders)...

Although, whether or not that'd be better than having Hogan is up for debate.

It's indeed just a matter of opinion.

Personally, I enjoy alot of things.
Although I must say I have no idea where certain angles are leading, and some characters I would handle differently, but overall I like what I see.

Example:
Jericho as an obnoxious asshole with illusions of grandeur is great to watch. In fact, more fun than if he had the title.
Taker as a bad mofo is great to watch. I do hope he beats Hogan though as I don't think Hogan is that interesting.

HHH after his return has become semi-boring, but WWE seemed to realise this and his nasty side is showing again, I like it.

Anyways, I think the shows are fun, but they could be better..

I totally agree with you on this. With most of us following more than just WWE (be it Indy's, Japan, or Lucha) we see much better in-ring product than the average WWE fan is watching. The problem, though, is those average fans are losing interest.

A perfect example of this is the perception of wrestling by people over the past 7, or so, years. Before the Austin boom hit, wrestling was watched by the core audience of fans and not much more. When WWE (the WWF Attitude era) came about with Austin, then people who just follow with what is cool at the moment (the same people who were wearing Rams jerseys a year ago are now wearing Patriots jerseys) started watching the TV, PPVs, and attending shows. None of them knew, or cared about wrestling, they just wanted the T&A and Austin flipping the bird to everybody and drinking beer.

The problem is (and I don't understand why anybody in the entertainment business realizes this) that people grow tired of a certain concept quickly. Wrestling is no different. After a while people will expect more out of something, or somebody, and when they don't get it they move on. That is what all of these casual fans have done. All the people watching Raw 3 years ago are now watching Fear Factor and Survivor. Now, the WWE could do try and honestly build new stars (what they did with Austin and Rock) to get those casual fans back, but they are instead doing what other entertainment comapnies are doing, and that is obviously not working.

The reality show only works when it's people put into an environment that they have trouble adapting to (Survivor compared to Real World), and if the WWE took a real world approach to Tough Enough (what I mean is show how an everyday wrestling school would go, not some MTV-esque T&A show with people who don't want "it") it might have not died in the second season as bad as it did. For the most part, "Reality Shows" are not reality... How many times a week do you worry about getting voted off the Island? The original concept shows (Osbornes) are what gets people's attention, and the media coverage is a big plus.

The other big thing now is the renunion shows. WWE is doing it with Hogan, and like nearly everybody has been saying since day one, he is a one trick (or one pop) pony and once that initial burst in ratings is gone and those viewers see that their boy-hood hero is just a gimpy old man, they'll turn away and probably never turn back.

I think I got too far off topic, but I think it has some relevance with CRZ's statement of being a matter of perspective. Because while we as die-hard fans see the faults of wrestling and keep coming back, the more casual fan will just change the channel because they can see the same (if not better) action and drama some place else, which is what they are currently doing.

Yeah, but WCW was the place where all the Suck went. Without WCW the suck has no place left to go, and ends up in the WWF(E), now it's taking over.

Well, apart from that, WCW did bring in some fans. People who tuned in to WCW just to see Sting, or Goldberg, or the Cruisers, or whatever, then flipped over to RAW while whatever they wanted to see on Nitro wasn't on. Then they'd get interested and tuned into Smackdown.
