Well, damn.

St. Louis: 5
San Diego: 1

I want to say the Cards made a statement, but when your Game 2 starter is JEFF WEAVER, your team has problems.

And speaking of problems, it looks like Orlando Hernandez may possibly be out for tomorrow's Game 1 against the Dodgers.

EDIT: Oops! Looks like I can't trust the buggy ESPN Gametracker.

WWF: Shawn Michaels d. Mankind at Mind Games, one of the 90's best matches. Also, some guy named Steve Austin made it his personal mission to bring Bret Hart back to the ring.

WCW: The nWo prevailed in War Games with the help of a Fake Sting. The real Sting walked out on WCW, kicking off one of the biggest angles in the company's history.

In his six September starts, he has an ERA of 4.21 and three quality starts. San Diego's Game 2 starter, David Wells, has a 10.51 ERA in his last six starts.

I, ah... not that it changes the complete sucktitude of today's game (Mark Bellhorn with the bases loaded? Really, Boch?) but the final score was only 5-1.

Tony Gwynn brought this up on a local radio show this afternoon. Since the Cards won game 1, they could come back with Carpenter for game 3, since he would have three days rest. I don't much like that at all. Hopefully the Padres can regroup.

I don't know how in the hell Bellhorn made the post-season roster. I would much rather see Ben Johnson or Termell Sledge. It must be that he can hit from both sides.

Boch can't afford to have Sledge or Johnson thinking "What-if" about that at bat if it goes badly. Would they be able to deal with "blowing it"?

Not so much of a mental risk, the way it went. Sure, they lose, but no one is a head case.

I wouldn't be worried about John Maine in Game 1. His ERA is best out of the Mets starters and lower than Lowe's too. He also has the second lowest WHIP (and also lower than Lowe's). His main weakness is homeruns which isn't a strength of the Dodgers. Yeah he's a rookie, but for every Rick Ankiel there's a Livan Hernandez or Jaret Wright. Oliver Perez in Game 4 would be awful though.

Maine went 4 and a third today, and only gave up 1 run, I'll take it. He was helped big time though LoDuca tagging two guys out at home in the span of about 15 seconds in the 2nd. Maine should also get some credit for alerting LoDuca to the fact that the 2nd guy was trying to score too.

I'm happy with today, and if Glavine can nail down game 2 tomorrow, I'll be thrilled.

It's this kind of ineptitude that reminds me why I absolutely can't stand the Dodgers sometimes. I can't believe they even got in that situation in the first place.

I'm hoping they rebound in Game 2. Kuo's a rookie, but he had a great game at Shea last time he pitched there.

The third base coach is taking the blame, but it's still one of the biggest brainfarts in baseball history.

And then Penny had to go and blow it. So frustrating.

As a Mets fan, I've been thrilled with this season, but it's just hard to see how a starting rotation of Glavine, Trachsel, Maine, and Oliver Perez can win a world championship.

Why not? They won 97 games with them and they didn't even have Glavine for parts of the season too. They were throwing Dave Williams and Jose Lima out there at times. I still don't see any reason for them to not win the NL, the World Series might be a little different but hope the A's somehow beat the Yankees and I think they have a chance.

The Padres lost today, and a guy on the radio here said they've lost nine straight playoff games. Is that true?

I don't know about that but the Yahoo recap has this little gem (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/recap?gid=261005125):
"Overall, the Padres haven't led in a postseason game since being up 3-2 against the Yankees after seven innings of Game 3 of the '98 Series."

If they haven't led, I guess they haven't won many.

By my count its actually 15 in a row, he must not be going back as far as the 84 Series.
0 - 2 This year
0 - 3 vs Cardinals in the 2005 ALDS
0 - 4 vs Yankees in 1998 WS
0 - 3 vs Cardinals in the 1996 ALDS
Games 3 - 5 vs Tigers in the 1984 WS
Even worse they have a 8 game losing streak in the playoffs against just the Cardinals.

Meanwhile the Mets go up 2-0. And we see just how good the Mets offense is. This isn't just a homerun slugging team, they score all four runs on singles, walks and sacrifices.

You should stop counting after the 1998 World Series, as they won some playoff matches to get there.

But yeah, not so good. But take heart - they aren't the Cubs.

Well, goodbye Dodgers. Thanks for getting my hopes up just to crush them yet again, just like every single year since 1988.

San Diego staved off elimination, so they might still have a chance to come back. But the winner will get a fresh Mets team.
