Hugo Chavez is my Hero! (hosted.ap.org)

The gist!: Today, US whipping boy and Left-Wing poster boy, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez was greeted with 'giggles' during his speech and also received some applause when he called President Bush the Devil.

You gotta give the guy his 'moxie' for standing up and saying what he believes yet doesnt allow his own people free speech. His balls must be at least as big as Vince McMahons' grapefruits.

Damn, You wanna see the biggest PPV ever, let's have a Hell In The Cell match between Bush and Chavez! That shit would be the biggest money making PPV ever!

No, you call him a freedom-hating Marxist dictator. You don't give him kudos.

Shame on the UN delegates that applauded this a**hole.

Look at the composition of the UN and it shouldn't shock you in the least. I actually thought yesterday afternoon when the leaders of Iran and Sudan were speaking and today when Hugo came to town would have been perfect opportunities for a Mike Dukakis 'furloughesque' idea and let all the prisoners from Rikers Island celebrate 'Take a Field Trip to the United Nations Day'. Or, at the very least, perhaps a few of the Marines that had the opportunity to meet the President of Iran back in '79 could have had a few minutes alone with him to renew acquaintances.

I don't know why it would shock youor anyone that Chavez would say this. He believes he holds the cards because a few Dinos died in his country back in the day. Not much different than some middle eastern folks I could name.

So Chavez can say what he wants. The UN can applaud him. That's fine. Because the UN is passe. Irrelevant. Ineffective in every way. And would be gone in seconds if we stopped paying so much of the freight.

I wish we would. And I think the John Birchers are nuts. But on this one, I agree with them. Not an isolationist, just not willing to support our enemies anymore.

Any American who complains about Chavez and then drives an SUV should be beaten with a T. Rex bone. Without oil money Chavez is just another TPD who no one notices.

As currently constituted yes, the UN is a waste. Mostly because it exists solely as a forum to rubber stamp US interests, or to allow the pretense that we give a shit what anyone else in the world thinks.

That said, one has to wonder for how long a country can stand with the enmity of an ever-growing chunk of the world population against it, and what sort of crops will be reaped in the future. It appears to me sometimes that American policy is based upon the idea that we will live eternally in a unipolar world with our nation as a dominant force. But with every day we are stuck unable to pacify such comprably tiny nations as Iraq or Afghanistan, I fear the rest of the world fears us less and less. How much must Iran be emboldened by the fact that we have basically made it clear we have no choice but to try and negotiate or (irony) use the UN to impose economic sanctions on them?

Sure, disband the UN. Take the Bolton suggestion and blow up the top 10 floors. Pull every dime we spend on it out and let faith-based groups teach abstinence in Africa. That's all very minor in the grand scheme of it all. But unless our plan is to become a fully self-sustaining country, we best start trying to figure out a different language for communicating with the world. Maybe the 50-60 year olds will live in a world essentially unchanged until their deaths, but the children of Americans being born now are unlikely to find the Pax Americana and The American Century to be their inheritance from our leaders.

Or be like me and just hope every day that the zombies are coming to simplify matters.

Bah... they're both the devil, just in a different form. Chavez, obviously, is a bigger devil than Bush, but I wouldn't vote for Chavez if he were running for office, and I didn't and wouldn't vote for Bush, either.

The U.S. keeps it around because the U.S. needs it. It is your only vehicle for seeming even remotely concerned with how the world views your agendas. Now, most of the world is intelligent enough to know you're not, but it's still a really cute way of seeming less unilateral and megalomaniacal.

You've still got your fucking veto, what more do you want? The United Nations of America? You have those already, they're called States.

The reason they applaud is because what this lunatic says appears true to anyone who isn't American or dependent upon seeing America as innocuous. America is far from innocuous, and not everything it does is okay. It is only when the clinically insane point this out (Chavez and Ahmadinejad, for example), that it even makes headlines. Perhaps this is because sane people are too scared to say anything.

Even these crazies aren't all bad. Mahmoud has made big strides in women's rights in Iran, while it took two wars and ninety thousand civilian casualties to get women into school in Afghanistan.

I'm not sure why any leader of another country is obligated to like the United States and/or the President, and why I should be shocked and appalled if it turns out not to be the case. If Chavez doesn't like Bush, he has every right not to.

I agree with that. And I wonder why we let the bastard into our country. Oh yeah. We ALLOW free speech.

I'm sorry if I'm missing something, but what exactly has Hugo Chavez done that's so bad that even people agreeing with him in this thread are distancing themselves from him. He's democratically elected (twice, a recall rejected by the voters), he's reducing poverty in Venezuela, and he donated heating fuel to the American poor this past winter. What am I missing?

I believe the debate is on if he made a UN "party foul" and if so how badly. As is the case with spilling your beer on the host, all attendees will undoubtedly talk about if the host should invite you to the next party even though they aren't making the decision, never host parties at their house, and aren't going to stick around to help pick up the discarded Solo cups.

He's a politician, and the whole anti-Bush thing is not only keeping him, but his country in the news. Hey if saying inflammatory things about a certain subject got me invited to all the good parties and let me hug washed up celebrities, I'd probably take it to the next level too.

Have you heard, or read any speeches from this guy?
http://www.iranfocus.com/modules/news/article.php?storyid=4164

Today, the Palestinian nation is fighting the Oppressor World on behalf of the Islamic umma (nation). Thank God, from the day the Palestinian nation moved towards an Islamic struggle with Islamic objectives and an Islamic environment, and made Islam the dominating force in its behavior and orientation, we have been witnessing the progress and successes of the Palestinian nation every day.

I must say that you have chosen a very valuable title for your gathering [World Without Zionism]. Many are sowing the seeds of defeat and despair in this all-out war between the Islamic world and the Infidel Front, hoping to dishearten the Islamic world.

Such people are using words like “it’s not possible”. They say how could we have a world without America and Zionism? But you know well that this slogan and goal can be achieved and can definitely be realised”.

From his UN speech:

When that day comes, the ultimate promise of all Divine religions will be fulfilled with the emergence of a perfect human being who is heir to all prophets and pious men. He will lead the world to justice and absolute peace.

"O mighty Lord, I pray to you to hasten the emergence of your last repository, the promised one, that perfect and pure human being, the one that will fill this world with justice and peace."

Google TWELFTH IMAM and see what he's talking about. Hint: it has to do with the Apocalypse.

Following is an excerpt from a speech delivered by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, which aired on Iranian News Channel (IRINN) on August 15, 2006:

If you want to have good relations with the Iranian people in the future, you should acknowledge the right and the might of the Iranian people, and you should bow and surrender to the might of the Iranian people. If you do not accept this, the Iranian people will force you to bow and surrender.

This guy wants a total Apocalypse to bring about the 12th Imam. He is hell bent on making this happen. He has stated that Israel will be wiped from the planet, he has stated he is willing to sacrifice his country for this.

This guy wants EVERYBODY killed. Enemies and friends alike to fulfill a religious prophecy.

Whether you are American, Canadian, Iranian, Pakistani, British, Australian, or live in Tongo, he wants you DEAD.
If that doesn't scare the shit out of you, you are being far to naive.
