i hate to correct you but you must have overlooked the survivor series 1990 egg, and thus the gobbledy gooker.

Comments like the one a couple posts ago run the thin line of becoming speculation. So to silence some of that:

1. Brock Lesnar can't wrestle in North America as direct competition to WWE, not to mention that he's training for a career in ultimate fighting for K1 Heroes.
2. Angle is likely not the announcement.
3. It's only five days until we find out, so speculation is pointless right now.

Let's discuss whether there's a TRUE benefit in press releases like this. That's worth discussing, IMO. I can't recall WWE ever doing this in recent years. It seems like an attempt by TNA to just boost buyrates.

The bottom line: are you more likely to buy the PPV now, to find out immediately what the announcement is?

No, but I am more likely to log on to some website to find out what it is, but I doubt that is what Dixie is looking for here.

If it is Kurt Angle, then let the countdown begin for the release of WWE's "The Self Destruction of Kurt Angle" dvd.

I'm not sure that even if TNA announced that they have bought NBC and are going to change it to a 24-hour wrestling channel that it would live up to the kind of hyperbole that Ms. Carter used in that statement. What possible long-term benefit could there be to setting the bar that high for an announcement?

Long-term benefit? Likely none. Short term, maybe they get a few curiousity buys from folks who otherwise would never buy them anyhow, and if they get lucky some of those folks enjoy Samoa Joe or AJ Styles enough to stick around. Things like this always seem desperate, but less dangerous when you're in a position of very little to lose.

It's pretty clear that the big announcement is going to be Bobby Roode's new manager.

Im really worried its gonna be Kurt Angle now, thanks a lot guys

didnt tna once say that they had something earth shattering, and then it was just that jericho joined? (i.e. not earth shattering) maybe im getting two stories mixed up here. I dont watch TNA but if its earth shattering i must know dammit!

---

If brock or goldberg joined the company and it went into direct competition with raw, it would change tna for the better (not in quality, in ratings)

That's difficult to do without speculating as to the payoff of the hype. If it's a better/longer timeslot, then there's merit in doing this because a prime-time two-hour Impact would indeed do most of the stuff Dixie promises--it'll change TNA and could potentially the entire industry. (Note that she covers her butt by saying that events like the one she's hyping occasionally re-write the history of the industry--she's not guaranteeing this particular one will, only that it's the sort that sometimes does.) If it's a debuting wrestler, a match booked for Bound for Glory, or a twist in a storyline, then they're overplaying their hand, because none of those things are of earth-shattering importance. Brock, Angle, and Goldberg could all show up Sunday and it'd just be "major news," not "defining moments that change the fabric of a company forever".

The main reason Bischoff's hype for Bash 2000 didn't work is that there wasn't much of a way for WCW to "change the face of wrestling" in some way WCW hadn't already done. They'd already started the Monday Night Wars, they'd already done the best angles involving talent jumping ship, and they'd already expanded into a second two-hour show. Short of standing pat there was nowhere to go but down, and indeed WCW didn't change the face of wrestling again until it went out of business. WWE similarly can't make these sorts of announcements today because the only move they could make that would truly be historical would be a misstep.

TNA is so small for a national promotion, though, that they can legitmately get away with calling almost any manuever a huge deal for TNA. Getting on FSN, getting on Spike, getting on Thursday--these were all big moves for a small company.

I was already going to buy the PPV, so no. But if this is something like a timeslot change, it really doesn't matter when and where TNA announces it (other than making sure fans know when the next episode will be on). But they aren't going to lose any PPV buys over this either, so they may as well try.

Jericho never joined TNA. It was a joke Jericho put on his website. The day after he was "fired" on Raw, Jericho put a pic up himself in his arms-out "Y2J" pose with the TNA logo in the background.

The last announcement was the signing of Sting.

You should really watch TNA, so you can know what you're talking about.

The last time TNA, specifically Dixie Carter, made a promise like this, all we got was a dumb scorpion logo. So I'm not expecting anything truly earth-shattering.

This reminds me of those old WCW "We're not gonna suck anymore" announcements. Whenever WCW went through a management shift or whatever, they'd always hype that it was a new day in the company and more or less imply that things were back on track after a period of suckitude. This always seemed highly insulting to both the performers and the remaining fanbase. This was taken to an absurd level in the week before the Russo/Bischoff Era, when they ran that clip show and had wrestlers give testimonials. Don't announce something, just do it and if it's cool the fanbase will follow. It's like a football coach on his first day on the job promising to take his team to the Super Bowl or that it was a new dawn of glory for the franchise. Setting the bar to. high inevitably leads to disappointment.
It's like when the E releases press releases hyping one of their "controversial" angles, it never gets any play.

What gets me is why isn't this announcement hyped for Impact? If they hyped up this announcement for a few weeks, maybe it ticks the ratings up a few notches. TNA has a bad habit of making fans pay to hear people talk (Christian, Cornette etc.) It's bad form, I say.

I tell ya though if it is the announcement of of Bobby Roode's manager he will officially have the most hyperbolic push I've ever witnesssed.

I think you guys are WAY over-thinking this.

TNA's goal is to get people talking -- to create a buzz -- and activate wrestling fans who've heard of their product -- or even viewed it a few times and didn't stick with it -- to give it another look. Nothin' more, nothin' less. 'Cause it ain't like people are gonna buy a PPV just to hear an ANNOUNCEMENT. It's used as a buzz-generator, not a buy-rate generator.

And it seems like it's working.

If the PPV announcement doesn't match the hyperbole... so what? It's not like wrestling fans are known for being unforgiving. If the PPV has good action, good story development, and the announcement was AT LEAST interesting and somewhat exciting, I don't think the wrestling fans who buy PPVs will swear 'em off.

Bait-and-switch, over-the-top hyperbole has long been the industry norm. And wrestling fans put up with it in the past, and probably will in the future...

I can recall that Goldberg signed a 90 day holding deal with Spike TV. He hinted that in an interview, he would like to "break Samoa Joe's neck".

I can't help but think that in 2000, he once confronted Triple H in character at a licensing convention, but ultimately, he humiliated himself.

The thing about TNA is that they can't really afford to keep doing this. Unless it's a really huge deal (which there's nothing to suggest it is), that's just another time they've tried to pull the wool over people's eyes.

Now I get that wrestling fans have a kind of short memory when it comes to these things, but for a company that's really still trying to build any sort of real momentum or audience (and has really lost a lot since last year), coming out with big announcements and not delivering is just another of the littany of things working against them. Why shoot yourself in the foot?

Have they stopped hyping Joe's undefeated streak or did I miss a loss? Goldberg should no be the wrestler to end Joe's streak, I know that much.
