Despite all the controversy surrounding head office moves a few months ago, I wasn't ready to write off the Islanders. Now, I think I might be: Click Here (sports.espn.go.com).

I can appreciate that the guy wants to spend his whole career with the Islanders. Well, I can understand wanting to spend a career with a single team; the Islanders, not so much...

A 15-year deal is ludicrous in any professional sport; there are just too many unknowns. And while he was the first goalie to ever be selected number one overall in the NHL draft, he hasn't exactly lit the world on fire. You can argue that it would be hard to light the world on fire with that Islanders team in front of him, but at the same time great goalies make ordinary teams excel.

The only thing about this whole situation that makes any sense to me is that Garth Snow was a goalie.

A 15-year deal for a goaltender that has never shown the promise that he was supposed to have when he was drafted.

Perhaps the 15 years will also include DiPietro's time as general manager, as is the wont with Islanders' goalies.

I love how Wang is trying to run the Isles like a real business, with comical results. In a company, it makes logical sense to sign your employees to long-term deals. In sports, it's insane.

Scene: Mark DeRosa's brain. The year is 2005.
Part of Mark DeRosa's brain: Come on, another position change? One day it's second base, the next day right field, now it's third? Why, I oughta go into Buck's office and throw his talking fish on the floor!
Other part of Mark DeRosa's brain: Hold on, other part of the brain. We're making $500,000 this year. Last year we made $725,000. All for playing a damn kids' game. This is, as they say in Brainland, a no-"us"-er. We're not going to complain.
Part of Mark DeRosa's brain: You're right, dude. Let's go back to looking at this crazy porn Teixeira gave us!

It's not even the worst contract by a hockey player in the last 5 years. Or the worst contract signed/acquired by a team in the New York Metro Area in the last 12 months.

Mike Hampton says hello. Especially since it's killing two teams - the Rockies originally, the Braves now.

So...which ones were?

Question:
If the Islanders wanna trade him hrm..2 years down the line, would the new team have to honor that 13 year remaining deal?
In a sport like hockey you never know how things are going to work out. So many outside factors (including crazy ones like with Bertuzzi) that can make a trade necesarry.

Answer:
Been reading some more on it. The answer is yes. They would have to take the entire contract. There is no way anybody wants to touch DiPietro now. Not unlike fellow Islander Yashin.

The Braves are paying Hampton mere cents on the dollar ... The Rockies and Marlins have absorbed the rest of the contract. He's not killing them, just poor payroll management all the way around is.

I seriously thought my co-worker was full of shit when he was telling me about the 15 year contract. I went over to ESPN just to confirm he was a moron, only to find out he wasn't. 15 years is the single most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. I don't believe in signing ANYONE for more than 3-4 years at a time, just because of all the unknown variables that come with being an athlete. There's no guarantee they won't go mental and forget how to stop a puck, or rip their hammy straight off the bone, or get arrested for trying to kill their wives with a broken beer bottle .... The Islanders are STUCK with this man, through thick and thin, EVEN if a more talented goalie comes up. This is the same team that let go of Roberto Luongo in order to play him, and I guess they're attempting to justify his presence by continuing on in their stupidity?

HE'S NEVER EVEN WON A PLAYOFF GAME. And I'd be JUST as annoyed if my Hurricanes signed Cam Ward to an 8 year deal, because there's no guarantee he continues to play as he did over a 2 month stretch last season.

Off the top of my head, the money the Rangers gave Bobby Holik comes to mind. Martin Brodeur and his recent "respect" contract probably will bite the Devils in the ass in a couple of years. Some of the money the Rangers and Maple Leafs have been throwing around in the name of veteran presence~ over the last few years (a blind-squirrel practice that finally found an acorn with Jagr having a big season last year). And that's just hockey...anyone can feel free to open the NBA (read: Knicks) floodgates at any time. You could argue that Yashin's deal is just as bad for being just as untradable, since they have never gotten superstar production for the superstar $$ they pay him.

I'm not saying it's a good contract, and it won't be unless he plays up to his potential finally at which point his salary would be under what the highest-paid goalies in the league make now. But OMG WORST EVER would be pushing it.

Agreed. Mo Clarett and Ricky Williams come to mind from the NFL - those were *terrible* contracts (from the athelete's perspective, anyway).

Madison Square Garden used to be the "Elephant's Graveyard" for former NHL all-stars and 50 goal scorers. Sign your name, get your fat check, forget to play hockey and spend all your time clubbing until the Rangers trade you and then you remember how to play hockey again. I could go on & on about the bad contracts......

Garth Snow is giving Isiah a run for his money as worst GM in sports and it only took one signing......

Clarett was a bad draft pick but his contract never kicked in since he was cut in Training Camp. He also got no bonus $$$ from the Broncos. They only paid his training camp wages.

Here's my question: would there have been ANY other team that would make even a similar offer? Of course, not. The Islanders were obviously the ones pushing for the contract to be that long. Charles Wang, meet Tom Hicks.

I thought the max-deal in the "new" NHL was 5 years/39 million.

The maximum a player can earn per year is around 8 million, but there is no maximum on the years of a contract. DiPietro's contract is 4.5 million a year, well under the maximum yearly amount, it's just a ridiculously long contract. And yes, much like Yashin, this is going to turn around and bite them in the future.

They can't trade him now, no one will want him. How motivated will he be to play at his best? The money is guaranteed, even if he tanks it. Maybe he'll prove everyone wrong and become the league's elite goaltender, but I somehow doubt that will happen.

Even given that he'll be paid 4.5 mil a year regrdless of preformance, and the fact that NO team will trade for him ever (Bill Daly said that any team would have to pick up the entire contract and that it would count against their salary cap for the duration), the WORST part of this is that for a 15 year contract he'll probably only be playing for 10 years or so at most.

So for five years after he "retires" and is sitting at home still on roster, whoever is in charge of the team will have to deal with this added hit to the salary cap.

There's also the thought that this owner could very well get bored with the team in a few years and decide to sell it. I doubt many owners would want to pick up an NHL team that could at that point be damaged beyond repair. What happens to the team then?

Actually, if DiPietro retires (filing the appropriate papers with the league), the contract is voided, and there is no more cap hit (This is in the ESPN article linked in the first post of this thread)

The worst-case scenario in this is DiPietro suffering a career-ending injury in game 1 of the 2006 season, as the contract is guaranteed, he would be due the full contract amount.

He's not going to be viable trade bait until the last year or 2 of the contract, and even then it means that you're trading for a 39-year old backup making 4 and a half million per.

I've seen articles that say that all this came about because DiPietro expressed an interest in playing his whole career for the Isles. That's fine, but there's got to be a better way to do it. Start with a 5 or 6 year deal and see if he's still wanted at the end of this. Now he's around the Isles necks even if he flames out as a goaltender, because they're on the hook to pay him unless he files retirement papers.
