This past weekend, Husband and I went to a friend's party and had some wonderful bread that was baked in a bread-maker. I took note of what model they used, determined to get one of my own. Well, West Bend does not make that particular model of bread-maker anymore. I still want a bread-maker, but I don't want to pay 200 dollars for a worthless mechanical door-stop. Do any of you W's have any helpful opinions about this subject? Thanks in advance!
My parents are really into this right now. They don't like regular bread now, they so prefer what they are making.
They've moved away from the bread maker and now they are making it from scratch and baking it.
I dunno... seems a bit extreme to me. I like our bread maker but I got it for free from a guy I worked with who was throwing out all of his unopened wedding gifts when his wife left him. I helped him throw out about $1000 worth of stuff before I said "You know, I'm just going to take this.". Got a juicer too.
It works OK. Some older bread makers make really stupid cylanders of bread. They are OK for bread with dinner but not for sandwiches. Make sure you get one that makes squareish loaves.
I have one that my parents just brought me that I have never plugged in. I guess since CRZ moved from CA I am now the recipient of all bargain appliance finds.
We have one and used it like crazy for a couple years - loved it, but I guess we got tired of it. Worked awesome though. It's a Toastmaster We'll be back right after order has been restored here in the Omni Center.
They are bulky appliances, and unlike the rice maker, don't do double duty. We own a Regal which we've used... maybe 3 times. There is as Aaron mentioned, a brand new from a garage sale (couldn't pass it up) Goldstar breadmaker sitting in the middle of our livingroom at the moment, which will probably go to my brother or parents.
A breadmaker is something purchased with the best of intentions and then too bulky to keep on the counter all the time so it gets stored and falls into disuse, so chances are someone you know has one they can easily part with, or easily found at a thrift store or garage sale often in pristine condition or even unused.
My parents have one and they went through a phase when all they did was bake one French loaf after another. It seemed like a bit of work and time when there was a nice bakery around the corner.
But then again, walking into a house where bread is baking...my God, the smell is amazing.

OMG I NEVER thought about using a breadmaker for that, but it's so logical.
We don't own one, as far as I know. (I STILL don't know how I managed to not get one from my parents, unless I said "no" a bunch of times and have since forgotten)
Our experience is very much like haz's. My wife bakes bread relatively frequently, but it's the pizza dough it makes the best. The regular bread the machine makes is either best eaten very soon after cooking or it makes the most excellent toast ever, too.
When we were using ours a lot, we used to make small loaves (if you have used these puppies, you know you can have a big or small batch), take, maybe a slice out of the middle for fun and leave two "bread bowls" for beef stew. Scoop the majority of the bread out, - and we put it in a larger regular bowl and eat the Stew - tons o Carbs, but very yummy, with the scooped out bread along for the dipping.
We tried the Pizza dough thing a couple of times, but we always preferred Papa Johns or a local favorite, Wick's.
I think it's time to ask Mrs AWA if we couldn't have a loaf or two - I miss the smell.

No doesn't work. I told them no, and they brought it with them 600 miles to makes sure I had it.
Who knew that 600 miles wasn't far enough to escape second-hand appliances?
I've had my bread machine for six years. It's been three years since I made any bread, it's a pizza dough mixer.
I hated having my hands all gunky mixing the dough, so like the rest of the Ws, I have the machine do it.

In my defense, Christopher (her brother, not mine) was playing Escape from Monkey Island and when it got to the part with the pretzels, we also sent him to Safeway to buy us soft pretzels.
They're bringing Andrew to Angel? Yes! Spike, Angel, Lorne, Lindsey and Andrew. If they just had Faith it'd be like my Buffy/Angel dream team. (Anya too, but she's dead.)
