    Angle released
    Aug. 25, 2006

Due to personal issues, Kurt Angle has been granted an early release from his contract. WWE looks forward to establishing a new relationship with Kurt in the near future.

The only Olympic gold medalist in WWE history, Kurt Angle arrived in 1999 and quickly became one of the most decorated champions in sports-entertainment history. "The Wrestling Machine" is not only a six-time World Champion, but also held the Intercontinental Championship and WWE Tag Team Championship; he also won the 2000 King of the Ring tournament. Recently joining ECW, Angles unmatched intensity was rivaled only by his technical and athletic in-ring prowess.

Everyone be brave.

The wording of WWE's announcement is a lot more polite and optimistic than Meltzer's reporting:

8/25/2006 6:31:00 PM

Angle fired today

Dave@wrestlingobserver.com

WWE fired Kurt Angle today. It is known Angle and his agent met with WWE officials this afternoon. More details should be forthcoming soon.

HO! LEE! SHIT!!!

This is one of those things that, looking at the signs, you could see it coming. But you never thought that it would ACTUALLY happen.

Thanks for everything, Kurt. Now stay the fuck out of the ring and try to heal up.

Good for Kurt's long term health. Bad for the fans short term enjoyment. Thanks Kurt, now retire and go on with your life.

The first thing I thought was, "No f'ing way!" But, like others here, it will be best for Kurt's health. The last thing I wanted to see was for him to pass on way too early like so many before him.

"early release" - that may mean a no-compete clause, get straight a la Regal and come back when you can

"fired" - if there is not the no-compete clause (or even if there is, but no rehab, a la Jeffy Hardy) it's probably going to be blood on TNA's hands

This is great news if now is the time that WWE starts working on the Kurt Angle Anthology DVD. He's had more than enough matches to fill those 3 discs up. Call it quits and rake in the profits, Angle.

Ken Kennedy debuted a new finisher: Jeff Hardy fans will insist on calling it the Swanton Bomb, but it looks WAY more devastating when not performed by a 180-pound fruitcake.

I apologize if this comes off as overly morbid, but ever since WM19 or so, I've been concerned that this man was just going to get paralyzed or even die while working in he ring. I truly feared for his life anytime he took some crazy bump.

That said, this is definitely good for him if he can clean himself up, straighten himself out physically and mentally, and return. Angle just seems so obsessed with wrestling that he doesn't seem to take any injury he has seriously, and I think he admitted that once before in an interview.

I'm gonna miss the guy. Hope everything works out for him whether he returns or not.

This is pretty much what I was thinking. Just because WWE is sending this message doesn't mean Angle will get it, and now they can't make him do anything because he's not under contract. He's just crazy enough to jump to Orlando, and they'd be just starstruck enough to not know when to say no to him. Hell, it's taken WWE this long to know when to say no to him.

Under better circumstances, I'd be jazzed at the idea he might show up unexpectedly at Bound For Glory, but none of this would even be happening under better circumstances.

I'm gonna show my ignorance here but what all injuries does he have that need rehabing and healing? It's not that I don't believe that I just can't remember hearing about any. I personally think those guys need to look at long term health more as alot of times they push and push and really mess themselves up.

I know thye love what they do and the money is good but it's not worth your life. Took me a while ot figure out things like that but I fianlly did.

The general tone of the WWE.com article looked really optimistic about a future. I have a feeling Angle might come back and do a Wrestlemania or two, but nothing more beyond that. He's already a lock for the Hall of Fame. Why risk coming back full-time?

TEN YEARS AGO IN WRESTLING HISTORY: AUGUST 1996
WWF: Shawn Michaels d. Vader at Summerslam '96. It would prove to be one of Vader's last main events and he sure made a go of it. Also, Mankind and Undertaker faced off in one of the modern-day classics: The Boiler-Room Brawl!

WCW: Hulk Hogan wins the WCW title from The Giant, beginning a YEAR-LONG title reign that would be briefly interrupted by Lex Luger for six days before holding onto the title for ANOTHER four months. THIS was WCW!

I hope the time away will help him, but hope it's not the end of the line neither. I don't feel I've been able to enjoy enough of his work, thanks to the lack of UPN where I live. I was excited when he was drafted to RAW, and then disappointed when he jumped back to SD, and then re-excited (if that's a word) when he was drafted to ECW, just because I'd be able to see him on a weekly basis. I've been waiting for so long for word of a Kurt Angle DVD, and wondered when we might be seeing it, especially with Benoit, Guerrero, and RVD all getting one while they were still midcareer.

Until then, I'll sit here patiently, and look forward to the comeback.

Damn you! Even in jest you just made me ponder giving up my Sox tickets to head out to Chicago Ridge tomorrow night.

I do wonder if we won't see Kurt pop up in ROH at some point in the future. It seems like Vince is on decent terms with them, and might not mind Kurt doing a shot or two with them as long as he doesn't lose to TNA talent.

You've gotta believe that it was extremely serious if they'd release him. Even if he was "hard to work with", this is a company that lets Orton poo in people's
bags, so I don't think attitude has much to do with it. I haven't seen any ECW so I'm not really missing Angle any more than I already was, but it will be surreal not to have him in the company. In the last twelve months, we've seen Eddie dead, Benoit seemingly retired or at least taking a break, Jericho likewise, and now Angle fired. It's a crippling blow to the E when literally its four best performers all disappear within a year of each other. The product is quickly approaching "hopeless" territory.

They need to sign Brock, like, yesterday, and stop the bleeding.

As far as Angle goes, I hope to God he gets his life in order. I'm happily assuming there's a no compete involved here as some in this thread have speculated; notice they didn't say "WWE wishes him well in his future endeavours" and instead used much more diplomatic wording. And with all due respect to the TNA faithful here, Angle's too good for that place. This ain't Christian we're talking about, this is Kurt muhfuckin' Angle. If TNA were to employ him knowing his issues, just because they're starstruck (like Jim Smith intimated), they really are as sick as Vince.

So yeah, get better Kurt and come back.

It hurts to be a wrestling fan.

The point isn't that he's too good for TNA. The point is that the whole problem with Angle is that he breaks his neck and still wants to wrestle, he pulls his groin and he still wants to wrestle, and if WWE shuts him down he's probably still gonna want to wrestle. I for one hope he takes WWE's hint and heals up. But given his history I could absolutely see him going somewhere like TNA, not for the pay or the high-caliber opponents but because it's simply there.

From 411ManiaPWInsider - - WWE has recently trademarked these names: Eugene, Mordecai, Hirohito, and Luther Rains. So the first three have been thoroughly analysed already, but 'Luther Rains'?
