I've been using Netflix for sometime and I'm pretty happy with the selection of movies and with how quickly I receive movies. However, I can't afford to buy video games, so I've also been using GameFly to rent video games. The thing is I don't rent games often enough anymore to justify paying for GameFly monthly anymore but I also don't want to stop renting games completely.

So I was thinking about getting Blockbuster Online instead of paying for Netflix and Gamefly, that way I can rent both movies and games from Blockbuster, but I'm curious as to how Blockbuster's selection stacks up to Netflix. I'm not worried about Blockbuster's video game choices because most of the things I would choose are going to be the big releases, but I've had Netflix for a while and seen all the big movies I want to see. I mostly now watch lesser known, older movies. So does anybody who has tried both know if Blockbuster's selection is as good as Netflix? Is the delivery time for Blockbuster faster or slower than Netflix?

I'm a Blockbuster employee, and though I don't always toe the company line on many things, I honestly do believe our program's better than Netflix-- because of the (up to) four free coupons we send our customers a month. At $17.99 a month for the online program, if you use the coupons, the coupon value alone equals the price of the program, and everything you get online is just icing on the cake.

However, I should let you know that for the time being, Blockbuster Online does not ship out video games, and the coupons you receive via e-mail are for movies only. This isn't to say it won't happen at some point, but I wanted to give you the heads-up before you tried the program and were disappointed.

The average turn-around time for our customers in the Virginia Beach area seems to be around 2-3 days, since we opened a new distribution center in Richmond. Your results may vary, of course, depending upon your location. Some 500 Blockbuster stores are now fulfilling online orders themselves, out of their own inventory, Monday through Saturday (up to 10 at a time).

After reading through the website, I'd suggest that if you'd like to try the program, I'd pick up a free online trial through a Blockbuster store, if possible. The website gives you only the first two weeks free; the in-store trial offer gives you the first month for free.

and the coupons you receive via e-mail are for movies only.

That's not what my e-coupons say. I get Games in store with my e-coupons all the time. The fine print says:

"Get one free movie (DVD or VHS) or game rental at any participating BLOCKBUSTER(R) store in the US with this BLOCKBUSTEROnline(R) e-coupon during the period stated on the front. Excludes equipment rentals."

I have been a Blockbuster Online member for about a year and half and I really like it. So it is possible they changed their policy on games, but for long time customers allowed us to keep the perk of renting games with the e-coupons.

As for how long it takes; I usually get movies in about 2 days from the time i get the e-mail stating they have shipped and 2 days from the time iI mail it back for them to get it and it to clear my queue. Since I can rent games with my e-coupons and I live a mile from my Blockbuster I essentially get all the movies I can watch in one month plus 2 free XBox games for $17.99 per month. So, for me, it is much better than Netflix. I highly recommend the service.

I used to be a Blockbuster Online customer. I got 2 free in-store coupons a month, which could be used to rent either games or movies. Occasionally I would get another coupon that would get me something else (e.g., free used DVD). The online selection was excellent, although you could only rent movies online. No video games.

As for turn around time, it would usually take 2-3 days for them to send me a movie, although every once in awhile there would be some glitch in the system and I would have to remind them (through a simple to use online form) that the movie had not shown up yet.

Whenever I sent the movies back, they seemed to receive them even faster than when they sent them to me. It was not unusual for me to mail the movie one day and receive an email confirmation that they had received it the next day (this is from St. Louis).

All in all, I was happy with my service. The only reason I canceled was because I found myself watching less than 2 movies a month, so it wasn't really worth it to me.
