I can't say that I'm terribly surprised this happened. This doesn't bode well for Blu-Ray. I can see people hesitating to get on board with that format for exactly this kind of reason.
I don't know that'll be the same situation, though. UMD's were only playable on one device, the PSP. Presumably, there will be other BRD players besides the Playstation 3, although what I've been reading about the first Samsung BRD player hasn't been all that spectacular, really.

I get so much use out of my Hi-MD player, it's ridiculous. Why Sony didn't use MDs for their proprietary medium for the PSP...I don't know. I mean, they're pretty much the same thing, right?
I used to love playing movies on my PSP, but I got tired of it. I'd rather play them on my laptop instead.

Since the PSP is so expensive that I dare not risk letting it leave the house, I really never saw a point to buying a UMD movie for it. (For that matter, I haven't even bought a game for it, yet-- just because it's expensive, see, doesn't mean I actually paid for it. My dad won it in a contest at work and sent it to me. I was gonna buy GTA:LCS, but when I realized it was coming out on PS2 cheaper, I said, "Eh, screw it.")
In any event, my Game Boy Advance SP gets a helluva lotta playtime, even compared to my PS2 and GameCube, let alone my seldom-used PSP.

Does this mean that when the PSP eventually retires from the marketplace, there will be more than just old sports games left over? That could be a first.
Crap...girlfriend is going to crap a brick on this one considering she actually invested in the PSP and UMD movies for travel purposes. Facepalm...jeez what a bummer.

I saw this coming... I didnt wanna say it, cause too many people I care about wasted their money on this (lol) but yeah, Why would the mass of consumers spend money on movies that can only be used on one device when there are better alternatives out there with more support? Bad planning overall by Sony.
As for Blu-Ray, even if the first Non-PS3 BR Players are sub-standard; just the fact that there is a movement towards that format beyond just Sony and/or a videogame device can (not saying it definitely will) make the difference between VHS or Betamax.
EDIT: Maybe Sony can release future iterations of the PSP in formats that have more support?

Nah, I still think HD DVD's(or Blu Ray) will fail on the whole. Consumers took their time moving to DVD's and only did so because there was a very easy to see, huge difference in video and audio quality as well as being able to skip around and not rewind. Now they've all invested tons of money in replacing their VHS collection with DVD's, and here comes a new format that doesn't offer enough of a difference in my view. Sure the picture quality is better, but not as big a difference as VHS vs DVD. That's the only advantage here really, because normal people don't understand or care about how much data it can hold. I just think the whole idea will tank pretty badly. Maybe in five years people might care, but I'm not even sure about that.
But back on subject, yeah I think most everyone could see the UMD movies were a bad idea, and that the PSP as a whole was priced too high. Which is why we're now seeing rumors that there might be another big price drop for the holidays.
