Being a mark for "Anchorman" and "40-Year Old Virgin," I had to check this out on opening night. Much like "Anchorman," some of the scenes in the commercials weren't in the movie. I thought it was good and funny in spots, but I'd rank it behind "Anchorman" and "Virgin." Most of the funny spots came in the parts of the movie that were improvised.
Here are some more thoughts from a demented mind in Central Florida: CAUTION: MINOR SPOILER in this post
Caught this Friday night with the posse from work. It had a few spots that kind of bummed me out (I was expecting more of a slow-climb-to-greatness story rather than a greatness-out-of-nowhere-then-falls-to-the-bottom-then-gets-right- back-up story), but, for the most part, I laughed my ass off. It's a great ensemble comedy - everybody in the film has (at least) some small good part to do with his or her role. Oh, and it's good to see Andy Richter working again.
And Amy Adams is my new actress crush. Hot, hot, HOT!!
Though I'd rank this one slightly behind "40 Year Old Virgin," it probably surpasses "Anchorman."
Why yes, I am both a musician and a lawyer. Thanks for asking. :)
Watching Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen play off each other was classic, especially the scene in the bar! I thought the "gay Frenchman" thing was overdone, but I got an initial chuckle out of Cohen and Gay Lover Andy Richter.
I didn't realize that was Amy Adams until the credits rolled. It seemed more like she was channeling Amy Acker with her shyness and her mannerisms. She did a good job.
John C. Reilly brought the goodness, but if I hear the words "Shake & Bake" one more time...
I won't rank this over Anchorman, only because TD seemed to beat certain jokes into the ground. But it's still work a look and worth buying when it comes out on DVD.
Easily one of the funniest movies (to me) in quite awhile. John C. Reilly was fantastic, especially the scene where Ricky Bobby's in the "coma" and the one where they're having the family dinner. And how awesome was Gary Cole? And who knew Michael Clarke Duncan would be that good in a comedic role?
Gotta also give props to the cougar. She totally put this movie over the top.
Not as transcendentally hilarious as Anchorman, but the nearest to approach it of all the those guys-related comedies of the last three or four years. I was worried that this one would be a little more straightforward and watered-down, but it's in essentially the same spirit of cutting loose and saying absurd things with funny vocal inflections. The jokerate ratio is probably closer to .7 than 1.0, and it does meander at times, but they connect with some major league jokes and there are numerous great laughs to be had. If I had to pick one for posterity, it'd probably be the dinner table scene where modifications in the references to the baby Jesus keep building.
Will is, of course, fabulous. But it was also very exciting to get some new people involved in expanded roles. John C. Reilly, here is your chance to cut loose, and cut loose he did. Sacha Baron Cohen only exhibited a portion of his powers, but it was still thrilling to see him and Ferr improvising. And Amy Adams, who is all but as good as it gets in the biz nowadays, makes highly, highly good on the couple opportunities she's given. To mention more than demon cobras and skeleton horses would be to say too much. I would more than welcome back all three for future projects of this nature and place them alongside a Paul Rudd.
You would think that two kids spouting of wiseacre remarks would fall flat no matter what movie it's in. But because their lines presumably originate from the absurd Will Ferrell rapidfire improv, it actually works and is at times great. However, it was disappointing to see the extremely funny Ian Roberts from UCB and Arrested only get a single line -- I can say without seeing it that whatever of his that they cut should immediately replace all the Molly Shannon material. Yes, she's here, sadly. Oh well. If you don't chew Big Red, then fuck you.

I saw this Friday and thought it was a typical Will Ferrell leading man movie. Funny in parts, but ultimately disappointing. I love Ferrell and have him in my top 5 all time SNL cast members, but I really feel he is better served as the #2 or #2 guy in a comedy and not the lead. He was awesome in Old School nd I loved his bit part in Wedding Crashers. But everything else has always left me thinking that better parts MUST have been cut from these movies.
Now, I still think this was funny and there were some real laugh out loud scenes (especially the knife) but ultimately, the scenese that fell flat were more than the scenese that killed.
I loved the hell out of this movie, and will need to see at least once more to fully appreciate it (the question is, will I be able to wait until it comes out at the cheap theatres?).
I want to buy the DVD now, since the extras will be insane.
I would think I was going crazy and my mind filled the line in, but I trust in me. For now. Normally I wouldn't link to a waste of time like an IMDB page's board but there are a bunch of people who swear it is. http://imdb.com/title/tt0415306/board/nest/49798314

Bull. It was in there. Cause I never heard it in a commercial - and that was the first time I heard it in the movie.
My apoligies, I should have checked with my fiancee first. She says that the theatre was laughing to hard to hear it too clearly (hence why I didn't hear it), but she definitely heard it.
Holy jeez, I thought that article was a joke until I perused the rest of the site. Now I find it even more entertaining (though half of the site is articles denouncing Da Vinci Code). Good find!
Stannis Baratheon, father of the year. I feel like Littlefinger's admission that he doesn't know much about Ramsay Bolton is going to bite him (and Sansa) in the ass in a major, major way.
