And Soriano is evidently going nowhere. The Pirates, however, will look like an entirely different team tomorrow night.

(Source: ESPN.com)

- Dodgers pull Greg Maddux from the Cubs for Cesar Izturis and Julio Lugo from Tampa for minor leaguers Sergio Pedroza and Joel Guzman.
- Padres get Todd Walker from the Cubs for RHP Jose Ceda.
- Yankees trade Shawn Chacon to Pittsburgh for Craig Wilson.
- Pirates also get minor league pitcher Jesse Chavez from the Rangers for Kip Wells.
- Pirates send Sean casey to Detroit for minor leaguer Brian Rogers.
- Mets trade Xavier Nady to the Pirates for Oliver Perez and Roberto Hernandez.
- Rangers trade minor league pitcher Joselo Diaz to Kansas City for Matt Stairs.
- Justin Germano goes to the Phillies, Rheal Cormier to the Reds.
- Reds also trade minor league RHP Zach Ward to Minnesota for Kyle Lohse.

More could be announced, but that's what we have right now.

I am, of course, glad to see Chacon gone. I'm surprised the Yanks were able to get an infielder for him. I'd have settled for a used catcher's mask and a couple of those brushes that umpires use to clean off home plate.

It was Roberto Hernandez that the Mets got from the Pirates; Duaner Sanchez is out for the season with a separated shoulder. The Mets also flipped Perez to the Padres for Scott Linebrink. The Red Sox, meanwhile, got the immortal Brian Corey.

I love the Mets trade. Nady was surprisingly good at times, but the injury to Duaner Sanchez was devastating, he was probably our most reliable closer, including Wagner. So we bring back Roberto Hernandez who was our most reliable reliever last year. Then we also get Oliver Perez. Is he the fifth starter we needed? Maybe not. But he's a really talented pitcher who could eventually be really good. Plus with Soler only being 27, Bannister, Maine and Perez only being 25, Pelfrey only being 22, and Humber 23, we have a lot of young pitchers when Pedro, Glavine, and Trachsel are gone. Plus there's always Heilman waiting to be a starter too.

Perez is left-handed and 25, and has been traded twice. This makes me wonder... is he a highly regarded prospect by everyone or is he smoke and mirrors?

Well, Colleti was at least trying. Not sure what acquiring Maddux will do but the Dodgers have so many holes right now that hopefully one of these patch up jobs will work.

Luckily, the NL west is horrible so the Dodgers still have a shot at climbing back up into first place or making a run for the Wild Card. At which point, they'll be dismantled by St. Louis or NYM.

As a lifelong Pirates fan (and not coincidentally, a lifelong masochist) I feel inclined to shed some light on the mystery that is Oliver Perez. From having interviewed him after games this year, I'd say that his attitude is fairly good, but he's definitely got some mechanical flaws to work on. The thing about him is that he needs competent coaching and a full year in the minors to really hone his stuff, figure out what he's doing, and then come back and see how things shake out. Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if he stayed in the minors this year, then won 16 or 17 games next year.

Of course, I wouldn't bat an eyelash if he went 3-12 with an ERA that looked like the runtime for Stairway to Heaven.

Quick sidenote: All Pirates fans should be deeply saddened by the fact that the club was not able to trade one of its many young lefty relievers for Rockies 1B Ryan Shealy, who looked like he had the potential to address a huge need position for the Bucs.

Love, love, LOVE that the Yanks dumped Chacon. Too bad they didn't make a move that would have really secured their long-term future (as well as piss off a few teams) by trading for Colorado's Ryan Shealy. It's almost too bad the Pirates didn't get Shealy, as you know they'd be selling him in 2 or 3 years after giving him a platform to learn the ropes and realize his potential.

The Yankees keep getting better. Losing Chacon doesn't hurt.

The strange thing is that the only reason Craig Wilson demanded a trade is that Casey was eating up his playing time. I agree that Wilson is better. Now they lose both of them to make room for big country Eldred.

Now Shelton's 10 April HRs used up his 15 minutes; he gets sent down so that Casey can provide Detroit a veteran at first. I'm not sure Casey adds much else to Detroit.

Wilson can replace A. Phillips and should be insurance in the outfield if Matsui/Sheffield don't return.

Shealy is the overlooked addition of the day go KC, especially since Helton is fading fast.

Linebrink stays put even though Mets tried.

Best of all, Boston went to the Christmas party and came home with coal in their stockings. No A. Jones, no Linebrink, no Lugo, no Delucci, no Lidle...all they got is a David Wells to lean on.

Colletti had to save SOME face after some of the HORRIFIC moves he made last week.

1. He traded away Odalis Perez (one of the best pitchers the Dodgers have had in a while), some minor leaguers, and cash for Elmer Dessens! The same Elmer Dessens the Dodgers just had LAST YEAR! And he wasn't exactly lighting the world on fire then either. I know Perez was disgruntled, but was that really the best move the Dodgers could make?

2. He traded off Danys Baez to Atlanta. Call me crazy, but I thought the whole point of getting Baez during the offseason in the first place was to cover for Eric Gagne in case of injury. The fact that Baez lasted all of four months with the Dodgers when they're in major need of relief pitching is absolutely pathetic.

I like the Maddux move (even though he'll probably be gone after this season), as it helped get rid of the surplus of infielders that included four 2B/SS. So then why trade for Julio Lugo, ANOTHER INFIELDER?! That trade just staggered me in its insanity.

Sigh...just another day at the office for the Dodgers' front office. But I agree that the NL West is so weak that the Dodgers making the playoffs doesn't seem so farfetched.

I agree on the rationale for getting Baez in the first place, but fact is this year he has been HORRIBLE. Both Saito and Broxton are better than him, so getting rid of him makes sense. Getting Lugo so soon after Betemit seems a bit strange on the surface. It'll be interesting to see if Lugo or Furcal goes to 2nd.

The pissed off Red Sox fan's view of things: Okay, so Nixon isn't with the team, Wily Mo's in right and Kyle Snyder's the long guy. That's good. There's just one thing...WE DIDN'T TRADE FOR A STARTER!!!

Yes, it looks like Lugo will play second, Furcal stays at short, Betemit plays third. I actually thought getting Betemit was a good move. Like Merc said, Baez has been horrible this season and he's going to be a free agent so who knows if they would still have him next year to redeem this bad season. Betemit on the other hand is a good young player who has hit close to .300 in his two seasons backing up Chipper. And by backing up Chipper I don't mean he's only played 20 games or so, he's played over 200 games because of how often Chipper has been injured. Which is why I think the trade is also awful for Atlanta. They get a reliever who wasn't doing that well and certainly he's not going to fix the Braves pitching problem. In addition to that they give up their backup for Chipper one day before they put Chipper on the DL. So I say it's good for the Dodgers and bad for the Braves, unless Aybar is some awesome prospect I'm not aware of.

Oh good.

I saw It's False's reply to my post and wasn't sure if we were talking about the same Dany Baez that everyone else was seeing. The guy was HORRENDOUS! The Dodgers need to stop dealing with Tampa Bay, for one, and then stop making so many meaningless moves.

The Maddux deal might help, at some point, but again...it's giving up a guy who would be under contract to the Dodgers for about 3 or 4 years in Izturis (not to mention that it's a guy who has become a TRUE Dodger in the fans eyes) for a guy who not only might walk at the end of the season but who should have been a Dodger years and years ago when he was good.

The Betemit trade was the complete opposite. You give up dead weight in Baez and a kid who *might* make it some day in return for a guy who is already proving himself in the bigs and has TONS of potential. Re-sign him and bring him along at a steady pace. Quezzy and Merc are right...Baez would have been gone sooner had it not been for having no one else in the bullpen but at this point, so many games have been blown that it might as well be a bullpen by commitee.

Lugo and Betemit should be in the lineup tonight.

He's already had a season where he struck out 240 batters and had an ERA under 3.00 so there's clearly something there. I really like that trade for the Pads. No guarantees, but Perez has a huge upside.

Why would the Pirates trade a good hitter with good trade value in Craig Wilson for a horrible pitcher like Chacon? Are they trying to lose or something? That's another steal for the Yankees.

I'm surprised the Dodgers fans here didn't like their trades. Maddux hasn't been great this year, but he's still had some godd starts and could thrive in Dodgers Stadium. Lugo is worlds better than Izturis. Lugo is legitimately a top shortstop in the majors and is a vast upgrade in the middle infield.

No trade returning Ollie to San Diego. Would've been on the wires yesterday or today, and no such news was up.

As for Chacon... ahunno. I'm GUESSING he might be decent for a half-season and then resume sucking ass, as he's done in Colorado and New York. Or maybe they'll make him the closer and hope Mike Gonzalez doesn't take it too hard?

I'm not sure where Gugs got the info on the Linebrink for Perez trade but I saw the same thing. Yahoo reported that according to ESPNEWS the trade had gone down. But i checked ESPN.com and MLB.com for several hours after that and it was never reported so I guess either ESPNEWS or Yahoo got some bad information.

Speaking of Oliver, I heard someone (I don't remember who) suggest that when he gets brought back up to the majors that his team should try him as a reliever. I wonder if the Mets have any plans to try that since I'm not sure Hernandez will make up for Duaner by himself.

Except for a higher BA, his 0 errors at 1st(as opposed to the 3 in one night Dmitri Young had on Tuesday) and a HR in his first game with the Tigers....there probably IS nothing he adds. I suppose the Tigers will just have to grin and bear it.
