Our wonderful front row, top deck seats (presale password: BOOKER) were smack dab in the middle of TARPLAND, so we were "exchanged" for some lower deck seats which guaranteed we'd spend a lot of time behind idiots standing up with signs that had no chance in hell (tm) of making it on television. But at least we complained our way into seats on the aisle.

6:30 Pretty much right on time, the WWE Standard Disclaimer Tape plays as ring announcer for the evening JUSTIN JASON JOSIAH ROBERTS walks out. No Chimel tonight, alas.

The long, long ad for WrestleMania 22 (aka "end of PPV montage") plays.

6:35 Roberts asks us to welcome barely famous radio "personality" NICK from 93X's Half-Assed Morning Show. By the way, click on http://93x.com/Article.asp?spid=&id=242611 to see Kennedy and Batista on the HAMS from Tuesday morning. Nick cracks lame jokes which don't go over.

OPENING CONTEST OF THE EVENING: KASEY JAMES & IDOL STEVENS defeated BRANDON? GIBSON? SOMEBODY? & SCOTT? D'AMATO? SOMEBODY? in 4:16 with a double DDT and Stevens pinning...um, one of the other guys. James & Stevens (James was the one with the "K" on his tights, while Stevens helpfully had an "I" on HIS tights) were announced as hailing from Green Bay, WI so as to let we Minnesotans know that they were the heels - this was amplified by the other team (matching neon green tights) hailing from Eden Prairie, MN. I have a feeling all five guys were OVW folks (ref included). Standard, competent tag work marked by general "I have no idea who ANY of those folks are" crowd reactions punctuated by occasional rallying cries for the face team.

6:43 "MOOOOOOO" brings out JBL with MICHAEL COLE a few steps behind.

6:46 Ad for the Dusty Rhodes DVD

WILLIAM REGAL comes out to share a few words with the crowd - you can probably guess which four will soon be repeated over and over as we spy the throne and pyro tarp being set up in the ring

"Accompanied by the vivacious QUEEN SHARMELL, His Royal Majesty, KING BOOKER!" extended intro won't appear on the televised version

6:51 The standard WWE Opener will, however

LAST WEEK: Batista had it out for Mark Henry, boy - examine these clips

Opening Credits

WE GOT PYRO!

TONIGHT: A contract signing!Lashley vs. Finlay for the US title!Sgt. Slaughter's Diva Search Boot Camp!

Back to Booker's theme music and NOW we can light the sparklers behind the throne. Regal has a royal proclamation - something about Booker taking the championship at Great American Bash - oh, and Regal will take on Rey Mysterio later tonight. Booker has a few clips for us as well - turns out that after Rey went backstage after feeding Henry to Batista, Booker and Sharmell were waiting for him, and there was much play-by-play by King Booker over his accomplishments. Rey's theme plays, the pyro goes off, but there's nobody springing out of the Gangrelevator - instead Rey jumps him from behind and there are shots for Regal AND Booker. And then he's off.

COMING UP: Matt Hardy vs. Mr. Kennedy!

DURING THE BREAK: Booker's groin hurts! Booker is helped out of the ring by Sharmell and Regal while referee Jimmy Korderas applies tag ropes to the corners (can't remember if they were there for the opening match or not - will assume not)

Ad for "Wreckless Intent" CD, which they actually had vendors attempt to sell as if they were popcorn or beers - didn't see any takers

By the way, $15 for a program seems just a tad excessive

7:05 MATT HARDY became the first superstar to pin MR. KENNEDY on Smackdown! with a rollup in 7:24 after Kennedy spent too much time arguing counts with Korderas. Maybe Kennedy was lost without having Chimel to berate, as Roberts got in an entire intro without any protest. Kennedy's mic dropped from the Target Center Timberwolves/Lynx scoreboard, but as soon as Kennedy got to the heel bit about "Green Bay, Wisconsiiiiiiii--" is when Hardy struck first. Good back and forth match, and Hardy winning was very satisfying to me, as I got the chance to stick it to all the idiots thinking that saying "KENNEDY." over and over was hilarious. Boy, that Matt Hardy is really in the doghouse, ending Kennedy's undefeated streak and all that, isn't he? Too bad we still love 'im!

Batista shills the new WWE Magazine by talking about his cover shoot, along with the photographer who sounded a lot like Rey Mysterio but was much taller and less Mexican

Backstage, Krystal & Michelle talk smack about the Diva Search contestants as well as Ashley - Ashley and Gillian show up and things start flying

DURING THE BREAK: an awful lot of people show up around the ring...then leave. We speculate that maybe they stashed the midget during this time or something

7:18 DAIVARI fails to mention his hometown OR the Leaning Tower of Pizza while leading out GREAT KHALI only to the beginning of the aisle. They dare Undertaker to show his face. BONG - lights out - lights up - UNDERATKER in the ring. Hmm, maybe HE was stashed during the break! Taker will probably set off a "lightning bolt" on Friday but all WE saw was an explosion where one *might* have landed. Khali still wants to go, even shoving aside Daivari at one point, but finally Daivari gets him to wait on the Punjabi Prison whatever at the Great American Bash

JAMIE NOBLE pinned PAUL LONDON in 4:51 after referee Chris Kay was distracted one time too many by Brian Kendrick and/or Kid Kash. The chain's use as a weapon was prevented but Kash caught London's throat on the top rope and Noble used a fireman's carry into a...hmm, Noble ended up on his back with his knees up and London fell into a gutbuster. For all I know, Noble has used this move a zillion times on Velocity to win matches and it has a fancy name, but I am ignorant.

MIZ + 8 backstage - oh boy

Elsewhere, SYLVA(I)N disapproves - then launches into a spiel about a different kind of beauty - the beauty of Quebec - an island of tranquility in a truculent world

DURING THE BREAK: TEDDY LONG, a table, two chairs and a contract fill the ring

Auto Zone presents the WWE Smack of the Night - from last week, Batista demolishes Mark Henry - the Animal has been unleashed!

7:35 Long tells us that Batista and Mark Henry will have a match at the Bash and the winner will be named #1 Contender for the World Championship at SummerSlam, but if either man gets physical, they'll forfeit their shot right then and there. BATISTA is out first, and you must see his white suit to believe it - the wifebeater underneath, not so much (Kim compared it to a "Shawn Michaels special"). Batista has a few words about how great it is to be back, how much he missed Smackdown! (ha) and how what he did to Henry last week is nothing compared to what he'd felt the past six months, and what he WILL do to Henry at the Bash. And now MARK HENRY is out - unfortunately, he can't even say "SummerSlam" correctly, and foregoes trying altogether in his second take, but the gist is as much as he wants to get some payback - and the only reason he was taken out last week is because Rey jumped him from behind - he doesn't want to give up a chance at the championship to get it. So they sign. Of course, furniture is upended (and perhaps the table was supposed to break, as we see A LOT of sawdust in the ring when it's all said and done) but no physicality is exchanged. Play Batista's music again 'cause he's the face!

NEXT: Split-screen shows Lashley and Finlay

DURING THE BREAK: Garbage can of weapons is placed under the ring - I guess they forgot them (or a midget's in there)

GUYS SWEEPING UP THE SAWDUST get pop of the night (practically)

7:53 His name is FINLAY and he loves to be the new United States Champion, pinning BOBBY LASHLEY in 8:09 after THE LITTLE BASTARD passed Finlay a second shillelagh which Finlay used to KO Lashley while ref Didn't Write Down His Name's (will guess Charles Robinson since I don't have his name elsewhere and he WAS there tonight) back was turned.

Diva Search Contestants - Are - Won't Say It

Great American Bash ad features Batista

DURING THE BREAK: The obstacle course is set up

EARIER TODAY: Vito roamed the skyways and got a soul handshake in front of Marshall's

8:10 MIZ SUX is out to MC the Diva Search Contest Segment of the show. SERGEANT SLAUGHTER announces that the contestant what completes the Boot Camp in the shortest time will get immunity. Before the contestants try it, they have a demo of the course from the overweight stripper, now named BIG DICK JOHNSON, who completes his trifecta of show appearances. This will either be heavily pixelated, or (hopefully) edited out altogether as after he completes the course (1:20, I think) Miz goes ahead and describes the entire course one more time. Ten jumping jacks, a wall, some tires, a cargo net, a potato sack, a jump rope, back through the tires, wall, and finish. Contestants take about 0:40-0:49 with LEYLA EL winning in 0:37 (and possibly taking a few shortcuts, which I'm sure won't show up on television) - Slaughter kinda just counted to ten instead of counting jumping jacks and I think she missed a tire or two. Anyway, this segment took something like forever. Highlight was Jen's giant sash with what looked like JEM on it, which probably wasn't what she was trying to get across. Nobody fell out of their top. Also a miracle: not one "HOO RAH," but unfortunately that *also* means zero chance of a marine beating up Miz later tonight

Black Stone Cherry's "Lonely Train" is the official theme of the Great American Bash! Let's check out that lineup:
o Rey Mysterio vs. King Booker for the World Championship
o Batista vs. Mark Henry in a #1 Contender's Match for the World Championship
o Brian Kendrick & Paul London vs. The Pit Bulls for the WWE tag team Championship
o Triple Threat Match: Finlay vs. William Regal vs. Bobby Lashley for the US Championship
o Punjabi Prison Match: Great Khali vs. Undertaker

World champ REY MYSTERIO defeated WILLIAM REGAL in 6:37 with a springboard splash. KING BOOKER & QUEEN SHARMELL graced the commentary team with their presence, which I'm sure ruled. Nick Patrick counted the three. After the match, Rey did a 619 around the ringpost on the floor on the King, and there were a few more shots after that.

8:43 Show's over, time to begin the quick change!

Roberts gives us a "less than two minutes" cue for the 8:45 SciFi cut-in

At this point, THE LITTLE BASTARD rather conspicuously pops out from underneath the ring and runs backstage - I was disappointed they didn't try to smuggle him out or anything

8:45:30 TONIGHT: Kelly's Expose with Kelly Candice Kelly Michelle Kelly!
TONIGHT: Ric Flair vs. The Big Show - Extreme Rules - ECW World Championship on the line!

Interestingly, they don't move the commentary table - they just switch locations for the hard cam from the side to a riser in front of the Smackdown! set. It's mostly a curtain doing all the work to make it look NOT like the Smackdown! set. Maybe other people have told you this already; I don't read spoiler reports, myself, so it's NEW TO ME

T-SHIRT GUN GUY comes out to shoot T-shirts at us. I touched one as it zinged by (and got elbowed in the groin, and also the shirt was going by FAST and it HURT) - lawsuit in the making

8:54 Special Video Look at last year's "Tribute to the Troops" when all the superstars we won't see tonight went to Afghanistan. Always fun to make the obvious joke whenever Chris Masters is on the screen

8:57 JOE & TAZZ come out while Tazz' old intro video plays (yet his ECW audio doesn't quite match his WWE video).

Roberts gives us another "less than two minutes" cue as I notice the kid next to me has a handmade "RBD is ECW" sign. I enjoy a laugh a this expense, because the children are our future.

-=There'll be an ECW show report elsewhere, later=-

Funny moment: during Heyman's promo, the in-ring cameraman kept making thumb motions to try to get Paul to face the hard camera - even HE was used to it being in a certain place. Heyman got the "look that way" cue like three separate times during his messiah speech.

AD BREAK: Here's the Jet song and the Special Video Look at the Divas. Looks like all the occurrences of Christy Hemme have been replaced with Mickie James. "Divas Do New York" DVD is AVAILABLE NOW!!!

During the TOMMY DREAMER vs. TEST match, one of the bottom turnbuckle covers comes off - guess they forgot to tie it. This gets fixed soon enough.

AD BREAK: "Greatest Managers" DVD - man, they sure shill a lot of stuff - I mean, they used to do that in the past, but it used to be the ring announcer trying to get us to buy crappy T-shirts TODAY instead of DVDs at Wal-Mart, fye and wherever DVDs are sold...maybe the margins are better for DVDs...

They also played entrance videos for CANDICE MICHELLE, then KELLY KELLY despite neither of them coming out until we were back on TV LIVE

AD BREAK: WWE 24/7 Special Video Look at ... lots of clips of "great moments from the past," I assume. Set to "Right Now" by Van Halen, so you KNOW it's a loooooooong ad break

AD BREAK: They play the ECW theme one more time for the heck of it. This may have actually been background audio for some other part of the show, I'll have to check later

One more WWE Magazine ad

Ric Flair promo in here, may have aired out of order in the arena vs. on TV

AD BREAK: During the Flair/Show match, NOTHING happened. Flair was outside, Show dared him to come back in, Show offered him a chance to leave the match ("thirty seconds to walk away, to walk out on your own two feet or otherwise, someone else is carrying you out"), then HE left the match, Flair got to take the mic and promise us that "you paid to see this match and it's gonna happen - now get your ECW World Champion ass back in this ring 'cause this is Minnesota blah blah!") and by the time Show's back in the ring we're FINALLY back "LIVE"

As soon as the pin is counted, people start leaving. Notice they don't do a lot of long shots to the crowd after 10:00. It almost seemed like the match went home early, since they had to spend a lot of time lingering on Flair and the post-match treatment he was getting

10:04 ...and we're out

BUT

TEDDY LONG comes back out to tell us that "the party's just started!" and there's a special triple threat match for the World Championship coming right up! This doesn't keep people from continuing to leave

Mat and tacks are removed, revealing...another ECW mat? Huh? Oh well. During this process,

REY MYSTERIO somehow managed to escape with his World Championship in a match where EVERYBODY felt the title would change hands RIGHT THERE. ON A NON-TELEVISED DARK MATCH. Okay, nobody thought that. Still entertaining enough, albeit only 4:21, but I guess why SHOULD you bother when 2/3 of the people have left or are leaving. This was a triple thread with Mysterio vs. KING BOOKER vs. FINLAY - Finlay made Roberts say "THE NEW United States Champion, FINLAY!" three times, which was pretty funny. Heels team up, heels squabble over who gets the pin, Mysterio makes remarkable comeback, knocks one guy out, knocks other guy out, frog splash on Booker, 1, 2, 3. Send 'em home happy!

Rey's gone, Finlay's gone, Booker makes Roberts say "All hail King Booker" a zillion times - actually the other tech guys at ringside make him do it, then start adding echo effects to his voice - Roberts is getting ribbed but there are smiles all around

10:18 Roberts gives us the "thank you, good night" speech

THE END.

Look for the ECW #5 report in a few hours, probably

Big Show did the same thing here in Philly last week, too! He left the ring and went backstage during the commercial, and RVD just went around the ring, doing the pose. There was a big "Inn-o-cent!" chant, and he laughed and shrugged his shoulders. Then Big Show came back out into the ring, and the match resumed.
Weird. Maybe he needed a drink or something.

It hasn't been named yet. In fact, although he's used it in matches since his return, this is the 1st time he's used it as a finisher.

Hmm, we were promised Gregory Helms, too. I personally did not miss the opportunity for unpixelated Vito ass, but perhaps I'm just afraid when I should be curious. Wait. What I mean to say is I plan on taking a VERY manly nap during the six hours of "Project Runway" tonight

Just out of curiosity, did you get upperdeck seats by choice?

I didn't buy my ticket until the Monday after they went on sale, and I was one row off the floor facing the entrance.

Yup. I'm cheap and that's my seat of choice - upper deck, dead center, row A - well... when I don't miraculously score floor seats in the third row the day of the taping, that is.

We had row B of the upper deck for the Eddie show, too, and it was pretty great (except for the big fat hillbilly sitting next to me encroaching my "personal space"). Our trade-in seats were like Row N, lower deck, close to dead center but we got the aisle seat. You still won't see us on TV. ;-) Kim and I came to the conclusion that even with the "upgrade" the show probably wasn't worth face value + tax + inconvenience fee, but what the hell.
