In spite of Zidane's attempted Fatality, he's still been given the Golden Ball (soccernet.espn.go.com). Fatality? Well, look below.

The worst part of this whole debacle is that one of the big stories of the Cup was that this was going to be Zidane's last, and he goes out by committing one of the most childlish acts in sports history. Way to go, Zizou!

My friends and I were discussing this yesterday.....is Zidane's Cocobonk the single most inexplicable move by a star athlete in a major sporting event? Not a 'choke,' since there are lots of those, but rather just an apparent emotional meltdown? The only thing we could come up with was Clemens being a baby and being ejected in the 1990 ALCS

Scene: Mark DeRosa's brain. The year is 2005.
Part of Mark DeRosa's brain: Come on, another position change? One day it's second base, the next day right field, now it's third? Why, I oughta go into Buck's office and throw his talking fish on the floor!
Other part of Mark DeRosa's brain: Hold on, other part of the brain. We're making $500,000 this year. Last year we made $725,000. All for playing a damn kids' game. This is, as they say in Brainland, a no-"us"-er. We're not going to complain.
Part of Mark DeRosa's brain: You're right, dude. Let's go back to looking at this crazy porn Teixeira gave us!

No kidding. I still can't believe what I saw. Apparently Materrazi called him a dirty terrorist (which Materrazi denied). I mean, if you're going to get kicked out of your last game, at least hit him. A head butt to the chest?

As far as the most inexplicable move in a major sporting event, the only thing that compares is Tyson biting Holyfield's ear.

The other bizarre occurences that come to mind include the guy who parachuted in the boxing match (except that didn't involve a participant meltdown), and the Pacers-Pistons meltdown (except that was only a regular season game).

We were discussing this at lunch today. The only other thing we could come up with was Tyson biting Holyfield's ear.

Well Italy deserved to win the world cup.

This was one the most boring tournaments i ever seen. The teams that played a crowd pleasing football were eliminated early like Ukraine.

So the final four were "result" teams. Score a goal and defend it till the end, thats how they played.

I'm biased since I'm Portuguese but i think there was to much vitriol in the comments about the portuguese diving skills.
In fact we were robbed against France when the referee didn't awarded a penalty for a fault against C.Ronaldo. Since the British press started bitching about the diving, and especially after that game against Holland were a record number of red card were showed, Portugal got the fame and no gain.

Still it was a good world cup for Portugal and congrats to the Germans for pulling of a well organized and almost incident free world cup.

Jericho: You got it.
Stephanie: If you need some time to prepare….
Jericho: No, I think I’ve pretty much got this one down.

Having Scottish blood in my family, I have little desire to support England and personally I think Ronaldo was blameless in the Rooney 'incident' and that the red card was deserved.

However, even I cannot believe anyone who could say that they honestly thought Ronaldo deserved a penalty against France.

Every camera angle I have seen that from showed no contact and that he threw himself to the ground - he was even looking straight at the referee all the way to the turf with his special 'pleading' face on. Sorry, but that was a blatant dive.

Your point about the final four all being result teams though is very true. Just 26 goals were scored in the 15 knockout stage games - six of which went to extra time too. That's one goal per 59 minutes of football, compared to the normal average of about 37 minutes.

I tend to think that a professional soccer player head butting me would hurt a lot more than a punch from them. More than any one else, a soccer player knows how to get the maximum amount of force from his head and since the skull is the hardest bone in the body, that head butt had to of hurt like a son of a bitch. I had seen soccer players flop all World Cup and this is the first time that I think someone hit the ground legit. It looked like the guy had been shot. I am sure he has to have some bruise on his chest.
