I saw this last Wednesday. And I have good news. It rocks. The movie is everything a great sequel should be. Everything we want a great sequel to be. It's everything X-men 3 was supposed to be but wasn't. It joins the class of sequels like Aliens, T2, Spider-man 2, Empire Strikes Back, X-men 2, Wrath of Khan, the movie is fucking awesome.
It's even longer than the first one, a truly epic length at 155 minutes. So screw Fox and X-men 3 who thinks a BIGGER movie means it's shorter than the last 2.
There's a big time surprise ending. And stay all the way after the credits. You have to stay after the credits.
Bill Nighy rocks the camel's ass as Davey Jones, and the FX work, whatever it was CG, mechanical, or both; it looked ridiculously realistic and beautiful.
Depp brings it twice as hard as Cap'n Jack. I didn't find Bloom as annoying as he was in the first one. He's more tolerable. He's still a "square".
A lot of the face pirate crew are back. The midget, Mr. Gibbs, and the mute Cotton and his parrot. The ambiguously gay duo of Pintel and Ragetti are also back, but we saw them in the trailers. I missed Zoe Saldana who didn't come back from the first one though.
Awesome movie, and it will probably be the best sequel released all summer.
The Davy Jones work was all CGI, which makes it even more impressive. And yes, the movie is awesome.
To those who say people wouldn't look; they wouldn't be interested; they're too complacent, indifferent and insulated, I can only reply: There is, in one reporter's opinion, considerable evidence against that contention. But even if they are right, what have they got to lose? Because if they are right, and this instrument is good for nothing but to entertain, amuse and insulate, then the tube is flickering now and we will soon see that the whole struggle is lost. This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise it is merely wires, and lights, in a box.-Edward R. Murrow

Shhhhhhhhhhh.
(We don't really need to read posts like this - especially so many of them - but do feel free to add a post later telling us what you thought of the movie if you DO go see it, because that's something we WOULD like to read!)
The whole AWA family went trooping out to see this moving this evening - it's playing at like 4 theaters at the local multiplex - nothing. Kids by the trillions wearing pirate hats (I am talking teens), but no tickets - sold out til SUNDAY. This movie is going to do serious money.
We'll be back right after order has been restored here in the Omni Center.

According to wikipedia: After the credits there is a brief sequence showing the cannibals have now adopted the stowaway key-taunting dog from the first movie as their new king.

I really have to start staying through these credits I'm missing the after funnies or story.
Any ways I went to the late showing of the movie. It started at 12:15 and I was out at 2:45am. Man I really love our theater weekend late movies.
Well, I saw the first movie and well line that's always stuck with me is "I'm Captain Jack Sparrow."
I guess the thing I really love about the first movie that they also kept alive in this movie was the simple underlying theme of action, adventure, and comedy. Simple things like the, which they did in the first film, stop action of...did I really just see that parts toward the end. Some of the character twist and turns. Jack Sparrow, Jack Sparrow, JACK F'N SPARROW! Depp creation of Jack Saprrow makes me love those pirates even more.
I noticed a mention of "shades of gray that evolve..." true in more ways than one.
"Awesome movie, and it will probably be the best sequel released all summer."
That brings me to this...sequels in general usually don't perform as well as the orginial film but I think this is one of those films that will be perfectly fine. Even if you didn't see the first on it could be perfectly fine stand alone movie. Some sequels follow that plan as books do but not always. This one has that Matrix 2 type of cut ending but I think it will leave that juicy taste in your mouth for next May. I really have to wait 11 months now? What can I do to pass the time?
OVERALL: GO SEE IT! If you live under a rock get out from under it and go see a MUST SEE movie. In baseball terms this puppy is a HOMERUN! In exspensive diamonds it's worth five of them. Ok, I'll stop. Just go see it...please? :)

I thought it was very very good. I liked the plot of the first movie a lot better, I just think that this one was way too scattershot for the first hour or so until they get all the principals together in one place. A lot of what made the first movie was the interplay between Jack and Will and Jack and Elizabeth, and there wasn't much of that until this movie was half over, and hardly any of it was as light hearted. As a result, I don't think Depp gets to be nearly as charming as he was in the first one.
That said, the plot was kind of an entertaining mess until they started approaching the end, and then it got really, really good, but by that time the movie was over. I don't know. I really liked it, but part of me thinks that I'll get even more from it next year after the third one comes out. I loved all the cameos and throwbacks from the last movie though, and when Jack is allowed to be charming its great, and the reveal at the end was excellent. Just...it's hard for me to judge the middle chapter of the story. It was really good, but so intentionally disjointed....
Tonight I wanna ruin my life, I wanna throw it all away, In a spectacular way
Well, it broke the single day record, making $55.5 million on Friday alone.
I echo most of Excalibur's criticisms, only I'm leaning a bit more toward the "didn't like it column". There were a few awesome bits (i.e. the escape from the natives and the three-way swordfight), but they couldn't bring eveything together into a narrative that worked for me. The PotC franchise works best when it's letting the audience know it's having a good time (as in the above mentioned sequences). This one overdid the serious bits to the point of boredom. Davy Jones and the Fish Police just didn't come across as a threat.
And it was way, way, way too long. It wasn't epic. Epic movies make you feel like there wasn't a moment wasted. Sadly, that wasn't the case here. The story took so long to figure out where it was going, and it hurt the overall narrative.
This review (askaninja.com) voices a lot of my problems with the film pretty well, but I think I liked it a little more than he did.
But holy crap, that's a lot of money. I guess I'm in the minority.

Got around to seeing it tonight. Place me among the ignorant, because I didn't see the cliffhanger ending coming at all. This was a great movie, but it sets up a HUGE third movie more. To hell with the critics, because this easily beat out Black Pearl in terms of quality. Depp knocked it out of the park again and the plot really came together by the end. Sure, it sputtered in the beginning, but there should be no doubting the direction of the next film. Bring it on!
Barbossa strolling down the steps and delivering that killer line got whoops in our theatre. I loved DMC, but I love me some Geoffrey Rush even more. Can't wait to see him back full-time in part three.

I guess the voodoo lady brought him back to life? At any rate, I marked big time for Barbossa. How cool will the third one be: you have the evil apple-munching freak captaining the ship sailing to god-knows-where. Plus, Chow Yun Fat is in the third one, along with Keith Richards, so this will rock. I guess the "end of the world" will be China, perhaps? There are also several "Turkish" characters, according to IMDB. The movie was outstanding. I loved every moment.

What? I thought Jack Sparrow WAS Keith Richards?! How will we tell them apart? Wait, I know! Jack Sparrow is a YOUNG Keith Richards.... What? Keith Richards was never young?! Geez, now I'm confused.

What we need in the third installment is a nice, big Pirates Vs British Army or naval force of some kind sea battle.
I enjoyed the movie and thought it was a good setup for the next film, obviously, but my overall liking or disliking of the film will be determined by what happens in the next movie.
Which is certainly NOT the feeling I had after seeing "The Curse of the Black Pearl".
This movie kinda reminded me of "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly". Will Turner was the good, Sparrow the Ugly, and Norrington as the Bad. The triple sword standoff really hammered that home for me.
The whole crowd made an "OHHHH" when Rush appeared. I love being in movie theatres when stuff like that happens. It reminds me why I love cinema.

And for me, this happened on a Sunday evening show, when crowds are typically quiet throughout the whole thing. This was a legit shocker and major mark-out moment. And for me, it shot this film from "pretty good" to "DAMN good" in one shot.
I have to preface this by saying that I'm in no way a hardcore Pirates fan. I slept through 25 to 30 percent of the first movie (not at the theater, we rented it).
This movie was incredible. I didn't catch a lot of the throwbacks to the first movie (my friend I went with clued me in to those), but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
The last minute of the movie literally made my jaw drop. It's one of the top scenes I've seen in a movie. I was completely shocked.
And, more importantly to the studio, I absolutely can't wait until Pirates: At World's End comes out.
FOX Press Release (via Futon Critic). A shame, because despite having crap ratings the show managed to become great again this year. Scuttlebutt says that the show MAY get picked up by The CW next season.
