Just a reminder that American V: A Hundred Highways, the penultimate American Recordings CD from the late Johnny Cash is in stores today, July 4, 2006. His voice was almost gone and it's hard to listen to, but it's another incredibly powerful masterpiece. If "I'm Free From The Chain Gang Now" doesn't put tears in your eyes, there's something horribly wrong with you.
"That's my problem - I'm too frank. That's why my mother shoved me down the stairs. But then she is fat."
"God's Gonna Cut You Down" is one of the most bad-ass songs ever recorded. Cash bringing the fire and brimstone with a very Old Testament whoop-ass bringing deity. As he got closer to death it seems like every album got somehow more pure and more elemental.
Just picked this up tonite. It is an awesome collection of tunes, beautiful production and Johnny Cash, who's voice was basically hit or miss for most of the recordings, brings so much life to these songs. If you liked any of the other American series, I would highly suggest picking this up. Be forwarned though, there is only one song most people might know, the rest are obscure country or gospel tunes. But, well worth the money.
Just picked this up today, and it's amazing. "If You Could Read My Mind" made me forget Gordon Lightfoot ever wrote/recorded the song. Jesus, it almost brought tears to my eyes...

Absolutely. That Waits-esque arrangement is just freaking perfect for that song.
I could go on and on about this CD, but I'm cutting myself off.

Samoa Joe needs to use this song as entrance music.
The album is terrific. Nothing beats listening to Cash while driving around the countryside. "God's Gonna Cut You Down" is even being featured on my local rock station.
Scene: Mark DeRosa's brain. The year is 2005. Part of Mark DeRosa's brain: Come on, another position change? One day it's second base, the next day right field, now it's third? Why, I oughta go into Buck's office and throw his talking fish on the floor! Other part of Mark DeRosa's brain: Hold on, other part of the brain. We're making $500,000 this year. Last year we made $725,000. All for playing a damn kids' game. This is, as they say in Brainland, a no-"us"-er. We're not going to complain. Part of Mark DeRosa's brain: You're right, dude. Let's go back to looking at this crazy porn Teixeira gave us!
