My local paper, The Star Ledger, decided to play off of the World Cup by having their own World Beer Cup (nj.com). They took respresentative beers from the 16 countries - a link to photos of each beer are available through the paper's main site (nj.com) - and had them face off in a head to head competition. The bracket results can be found here (nj.com).

Now I haven't been a drinker for a long time and I have to admit that a lot of these beers - especially the beer from Ghana - I have never heard of or tried but I do know there are a great deal of beer afficianados on this site that probably have. I am interested to see if they agree with the paper's outcome.

I only know about half of thsoe beers, but the final battle of Mexico's Negra Modelo vs England's Samuel Smith Nut Brown Ale is well chosen. Both are excellent. I always get odd looks when I'm at a Mexican restaurant where 9 people order Coronas and I'm the only one at the table getting the far more delicious, yet relatively unknown, Negra Modelo.

Sucks that Grolsch was chosen to represent the Netherlands, as it's not very good and there are tons of better choices. But at least it was knocked out in the first round.

Ken Kennedy debuted a new finisher: Jeff Hardy fans will insist on calling it the Swanton Bomb, but it looks WAY more devastating when not performed by a 180-pound fruitcake.

I drank quite a bit of the Spanish representative, Estrella Galicia, during my two months in La Coruna ten years ago.

I loved it...too bad France's beer stomped it 5-0 in this competiton!

I'm not going to pretend to be well educated in a wide variety of beers, but part of the reason behind this is because i love Grolsch more than any other. Therefore if it's available i tend to not try anything different.

I suppose it is the best known, but if Fosters is the best beer from Australia, I'd eat my hat and wash it down with a Fosters. And there is NO WAY I'm drinking a Fosters.

Well I suppose it does depend a lot on what beers you pick to represent each country, especially if a country has a large number of decent candidates.

And to prove that point, a similar beer tournament was held in the UK recently and it was the Australian entry that won. See here for more details - http://uk.news.yahoo.com/07072006/323/australia-wins-world-cup-beer.html

Unfortunately, the article doesn't have much detail on what beers were picked or who knocked who out, but I'll see if I can find another link with more info.

At a guess, I'd say Coopers Pale Ale.

When a chocolate-pretzel combo isn't salty enough, you're wasting my time. The M&Ms are not salty enough.
