Triple H just seems far to *square* to be doing this type of DX stuff. Just seeing him hold a beer seemed like something he's not used to doing.

This Raw just illustrates even further the divide between the IWC if you will and the more markish fans. It may not have come across as well on TV, but the live crowd LOVED all the DX skits. I know this because I was there. Even though I found some of the skits dumb, the crowd enjoying the hell out of the DX antics made me enjoy it more. It made the night more fun, although I agree that the wrestling quotient was lacking big time.

I was interested in the main event, and I was just pleased that Cena did not win the title back. So there was a big pop when Edge won, just for the fact that he was not Cena.

Shawn Michaels was the MVP last night, with his good timing on the Coach hit with the door bit and the line of night about Mr. Fuji.

And of course, the sign of the night was a tie between, "Carlito, I swallow" and "Let Paul E book ECW."

Really? I've been down on JR for the better part of the decade, but I could've sworn he completely blew the rules of the main event, a standard Triple Threat match of the variety WWE has been doing for years. As I recall, it went something like this:

JR: Cena and Van Dam are really whaling on Edge! Of course, if Edge gets eliminated, it'll be down to just Cena and RVD one on one!
LAWLER: Uh, are you sure? If Edge gets eliminated, isn't the match over?
[brief pause]
JR: Uh, what I meant was, uh, Cena and RVD might take Edge out the equation by beating him so badly he, uh, can't get back in the ring!

When friggin' Lawler is setting you straight, you probably have problems.

On another note, I thought those DX skits got so tedious. I started fast forwarding them eventually.

I have nothing witty to put here.

Horrible show. I'd say they've never put on a good show under duress. The second there's some out of ring drama, the show goes even more to hell.

I do wonder what it would have been like if Vince Russo had been writing Raw. He totally would have played up the arrest. Also, Jim Ross reminiscing all night was nice. He seemed bored most of the night, as well.

Anyway, I watched most of it on fast forward. The DX stuff wasn't THAT bad; it's juvenile humor (but so was the initial DX.) I think the issue is that we're all 7 and 8 years older and don't find it as amusing. Also, people forget...Shawn and Hunter's DX were always annoying heels. The audience wasn't laughing with 'em back in '97-'98, especially after Montreal. DX didn't get 'funny' until the Outlaws and Waltman joined. Those guys and Chyna had weird chemistry that just worked. That's also when DX started drawing some serious money. Hunter was never THAT funny...all he did was a Michael Buffer impression. I think we're using revisionist history in our criticisms of the angle.

Some of the stuff Monday was funny; the crowd certainly enjoyed it. Of course, once again it went wayyyy to long. Every week they're running the skits into the ground. If they cut 10 minutes of DX time Monday, the angle plays better and doesn't exasperate everyone. Shawn is brilliant, btw. The fact that he seems bemused and slightly embarassed by some of the stuff is great. Also, how they manage to obviously send him out of frame when anything terribly risque is going on is a neat nod to his Christian beliefs.

The story of the show is Edge. Much like Attitude-Era shows were horrible, but Austin drove a truck to the ring and it redeemed the entire show, Edge winning the title made the show memorable. I was bemused that for months, online recappers and reporters blasted every show for not having Edge as champion, for burying him, for not giving him a run. Well, he's put over strong and wins the title and all I read was "I didn't like the DX stuff." We get a World title change for the first time on Raw since Austin beat Angle in 2001 after Regal's heel turn to the Alliance. I'm not going to pan the show...circumstances aside, Edge finally, definitely becomes a main event player. It happened probably a week or two earlier than planned, but none-the-less.

I'm happy for Edge and I actually don't see them putting it back on Cena anytime soon. He doesn't really NEED the belt, and there's hot money in a HHH/Edge match.

Oh, Orton wanting to bang Hogan's daughter is going to turn him into such a babyface. If Orton goes full a-hole snarky with this, it can be the best angle ever. I presume then, he'll be making a cameo on that fake reality show of Hogan's?

To those who say people wouldn't look; they wouldn't be interested; they're too complacent, indifferent and insulated, I can only reply: There is, in one reporter's opinion, considerable evidence against that contention. But even if they are right, what have they got to lose? Because if they are right, and this instrument is good for nothing but to entertain, amuse and insulate, then the tube is flickering now and we will soon see that the whole struggle is lost. This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. I at least thought the dx stuff was better this week. And Edge winning the belt was a total shock to me, let's hope they give him a run with it though. Even if he just got the belt becasue of RVD's legal trouble, it's cool with me.

Gotta disagree. Shocking show, sure. But in hindsight one of the worst booked shows ever. They panic after the Tacoma fiasco, blow up any plans for WCW, revive ECW, blow through an entire 18 months of storyline in 2 hours and reset back to the played out feuding McMahon storyline.

Bad show.

Look at other examples over the past few years of when something unexpected happens ( main event wrestler dying, leaving, being suspended etc.)

-Austin walks out and they have McMahon go over Flair to regain control of the company, completely blowing up that storyline.
-Nash gets injured and they drop the nWo storyline.
-Eddy Guerrero dies and they decide that their main angle will be exploiting his death.

I mean, it seems when they get stressed out or confused they just put the belt on Big Show...

WWE, like most companies, takes a few weeks to right its ship after something unexpected happens.

AH. Ah. Rock beat Jericho for the WCW/World Heavyweight Title a month after that. I only correct you because I made the same fatal mistake.

HHH's line about feces was solid, it was a nice throwback to the original DX, off the cuff, shoot style comments. Plus, it said what we were all thinking.

Man, even 6 years after its inglorious demise, WCW makes someone look foolish.

However, I'd like to point out that according to the E, the WCW title and the World title do not share lineage.

The World title was, in fact, created out of thin air by Bischoff...sayeth the storyline.

This actually will make for a neat factoid if Angle ever wins the ECW title. He'll then have won all 4 McMahon booked Heavyweight titles.

I'm sorry this is off topic, but I totally got your Clue: The Movie reference. Just thought you should know...unless this isn't a Clue reference...in which case never mind.

I have to disagree. Shawn, Hunter, and Chyna playing strip poker in the ring while a match is going on was funny. The welding helmets with the wipers on them while they are being griped at by Commissioner Slaughter is priceless.

Don't get me wrong though. I was a HUGE New Age Outlaws mark. I even have an NAO shirt. That being said, The James Gang in TNA is OK but they aren't NAO.

Enough of the sidetrack. The current DX is different sophomoric humor because HBK won't go that far. I still find it very entertaining. Sure beats watching Snitsky wrestle, or Val Venis job, or Viscera in his silk pjs.

DX Classic was the cutting-edge stuff. The four-man/one-woman DX of 1998 onwards was the crowdpleasing t-shirt selling incarnation, but was far less interesting.

Wonder what they'll credit the spike to. Because it followed a Pay Per View? Steiner? The correct answer - because they announced early that "The Game will not be on RAW tonight." Brilliant move and an enjoyable show.
