Kind of a nothing show this week.

Jay Lethal & Chris Sabin vs. Team Canada (Eric Young & Petey Williams): The joke here is that Young -- who is scared of being fired by Cornette -- does everything he can to keep the rest of Team Canada from cheating.

Young is fun to watch and has gained himself a cult following in Orlando, but at the expense of his credibility -- the guy almost never gets in any offense at all any more. Maybe with the break up of Team Canada (as announced by Cornette at the end of the show) Young can reinvent himself somewhat.

Monty Brown vs. Norman Smiley: Smiley actually gets in some offense -- two uppercuts! And then he's killed.

Team 3-D w/Runt vs. AMW w/Gail Kim: You know, the "garbage can with kendo sticks and other plunder" schtick seems especially tired now that ECW is back. I'm not against the hardcore-style, no-DQ match in principle, but they really need to find a different set of objects to use. As it is, it's pretty tired. Oh, also, I could really do without the part where Runt hit a supine Gail Kim with a golf club.

And that's it, except for an opening promo from Cage & Sting and a closing promo from Cornette. (Actually, Cornette's promo was the most action-packed part of the show -- he disbanded Team Canada, booked Zbyszko in a hair vs. hair match against Raven, told LAX they had to return to the ring, fired Hebner, and gave Jarrett the title belt).

Hey, why can't we have commercial breaks during promos instead of during matches? "During the break, Jeff Jarrett said some stuff about how great he is!"

Anyway. ECW was the better show this week. :|

I liked the opening match--to me Eric Young is really clicking with the comedy these days. I had no problems with the Dudleys/AMW match, as well.

Cornette's promo was pretty good, but they didn't really do anything with the Jarrett situation. "Well, Jeff, your win was totally unjust, and I really don't think you deserve the belt. But here it is. BUT...I'm going to make you defend it at the next pay per view. And...against the number one contender. And to make it really difficult for you...your opponent will just have been through a grueling match with three of the top stars in the company." What was that? They would have been better off just leaving the belt on JJ, rather than teasing a special solution and not delivering.

Yeah, they should have just left the belt on Jarrett, but I think this was there attempt to say "we're only giving Jarrett the title so he'll get his butt kicked by the challenger *cough*Samoa Joe*cough*". I thought Cornette did as good as he could trying to make it work but of course the fans didn't want to see the belt on Jarrett regardless.

Not only are the garbage can lid/kendo stick matches overused but they weren't even that good to begin with. If you're going to do hardcore then do real hardcore, not WWE hardcore division crap.

Horrible show.

Liked the opening promo with Christian. He's gone more tweener in the last few weeks. Sting was good, too.

Fun tag match, highlighted by Eric Young's stuff. I don't get the booking, though. Basically, Young is trying to tank the match but Team Canada still beats the Vanilla Midgets. Way to book your babyfaces, TNA! Also, after the giggle fest between Sabin and Lethal about what Corny had in store for Big Sexy, we got nary a word about it.

I liked that they fit in the Brown squash in one segment. Smart pacing.

I'm tired of the Dudleys. I'm tired of them doing the same tired act for 10 years and acting is if they're the hottest tag team in the sport. The team is the definition of stale.

And of course, as befitting TNA's role as the alternative in wrestling, we had the ground-breaking, 'New authority figure addresses roster in main event slot and makes groundbreaking announcements and changes in regards to the next week's show and the PPV.'

There were so many things wrong with this.

One, it came across as a deus ex machina. To wit, LAX isn't wrestling and have been furthering their political cause on commentary and attacking any wrestler that crosses into their side of the arena. You would think a wrestler would challenge their manhood and get them back in the ring or maybe they were waiting for the right moment to swoop in and attack someone (perhaps the tag champs.) Maybe The Truth and others would stage a huge attack on them. Instead, Cornette tells them they're wrestling and the angle is blown off.

Even worse is Team Canada. TC cheats and schemes their way to countless titles over the years and we don't even get the benefit of a break-up, of a Eric Young finally hitting Scott D'amore, or a Petey Williams coming to blows with Bobby Roode. Instead, Cornette says it's over and the angle is blown off.

The Hebner firing was a nice touch, but to any fan whom expected something groundbreaking to happen it came across as lame. He may as well have fired the towel boy backstage. It doesn't really get me jacked for what he'll do next.

The only thing worse than having a heel commissioner on a show is to have a babyface commissioner. Either the authority figure looks weak when the heels outsmart him (which they have to do to be heels.) Or, the heels have the odds stacked against them week after week and it turns them into the de-facto babyfaces.

I will say that Larry Z is growing on me again, though. I've never been exactly pumped up for Larry segments; he's been around forever and he'll probably always be around. The guys had a good career and made his money, had a few nice runs and all. The last few weeks though he's shown more fire and been a bit more on in his promos. Good for him.

The title situation is a joke. Okay, so...do we count this as two separate reigns for Jeff Jarrett? Technically, he won the match at the PPV; Cornette then stripped him (he said last week 'there is no champion'), and last night, awarded him the belt. I think that has to count as two championship reigns. By the way, I hope Cornette is smart enough to have known how glib he was being when he chastised companies for giving the belt to their neighbor or son-in-law when he was about to award the belt to the guy who helped found the company. The whole segment was dispiriting.

Joe shouldn't win the belt from Jarrett, by the way. Everyone thinks that, but it'll come across flat. JJ has lost the belt to everyone; it's not special if Joe beats him. Also, it leads to the chance that they'll go fifty-fifty booking with them. As Vince Russo correctly pointed out, wrestling bookers live in a bubble. They do things the same way because that's all they know. TNA bookers are already thinking of how much heel heat someone will get when they beat Joe (of course, they know that it won't do if Joe loses clean, there'll have to be something epic happen for him to lose, like a cattle prod.) They think about how much support an undefeated Joe gets and they dream about how much money can be made when a chicken-shit heels ends the undefeated street. The money is in the chase, right? Next thing y'know we have the 'Screwjob in [insert city] and Jeff Jarrett has robbed the Samoan Submission Machine with help from the 8,000 members of Planet Jarrett.

Now, we know that Joe winning the title only to lose it to some weak heel would be the worse thing ever.

Anyway, Sting should beat Jarrett. Jarrett should get out of the upcoming PPV with the belt (I’m sick of title changes hands in TNA in huge clusterfucks.) Can’t they book a decent one on one match for a month? They then build up the Sting/Jarrett clash for the belt. Sting does the Hogan '97 deal to him (only without horrible booking, hopefully.) And wins back the NWA title in a feel good moment.

They then build Joe v. Sting. Say it's Sting's final test. If he can beat Joe, his legacy will not be in dispute; he'll know he can be mentioned in the same breath as the Hogans and Flairs and Rhodes of the world.

Joe can say that Sting is holding the title that belongs to him and that it's time for the old guard to step down. Remember, Joe is professional wrestling,

Then Joe mauls him and wins the belt and goes on a lengthy run (ala his ROH deal.)

I know that fantasy booking is lamers, but to me that seems like the most logical path to take.

Anyway, the whole Cornette thing reminded me of the reset Vince McMahon hit when he disbanded the NWO, or when Russo and Bischoff would ret-con the entire company every few weeks.

Finally, TNA needs to do episodic TV. They do it for their main angle, but there should have been a promo with Low-Ki (he did win the belt last week.) Maybe Joe could talk for a bit. Week in and week out, the shows are too standalone. Ultimately, it's better to focus on fewer guys and make a tighter show than to try to get everybody on the roster on the taping. But I get there's payment issues and yadda yadda.

I like the idea of Cornette as the commish ex machina. It allows the entire company to reboot their angles, either immediately (LAX) or gradually (the title belt). He provides the audience avatar to clean up the old and tired. Yeah, it's like Vince chucking the NWO, which was the best thing to do since Nash tore his quad the week before.

Team Canada = gone. Thankfully.

Raven gets Zybysko. Finally. I mean that as in "and this angle can die" not "woohoo, Raven is gonan bust him up, yeehaw!"

This upheaval in the title picture allows Christian a true reason to go heel again.

They need this to compete with ECW. Now I know the first argument against this is that TNA has a stability that ECW is trying to build. But that stability is getting stale. That's why I replaced TNA with ECW in my viewing time. What TNA is doing makes me mighty curious to watch them regularly again.

I don't watch TNA that much, but I wanted to see this show. The one thing that I really liked was when Cornette was addressing all of the wrestlers, they were hanging out all over the building and not all packed together. When they do stuff like this in WWE, I always wondered why wrestlers that were feuding wouldn't just start attacking each other, especially since they are all stuffed close together. It's a little thing that TNA did that made it seem more authentic.

It's helpful that they have to two ramps, one for heels and one for faces which I really dig. TNA might not get everything right (but who does?) but it does have a different look and feel from the WWE like the ramps, the ring, the X Division, etc. Which I think is what they SHOULD be doing with ECW rather than making it just another hour of Raw.

Flairforthegold makes some good points. Instead of just ordering LAX to wrestle and Team Canada to disband, Cornette could have ordered LAX into a match (with Killings/Monty?) and made a match for Team Canada against several of the guys with a beef with them (led by Rhino), with the stipulation that if they lose, then they break up. Give the angles a real, in-ring blow-off.

Meltz sayeth that Jarrett won't face the winner of the Victory Road 4-way until the August PPV. So they've basically guaranteed Jarrett a 2 month minimum reign. That'll show him! B^)

I like the idea of Sting beating JJ and then dropping the title to Joe.

I don't know, Jarrett losing the title to Sting and then Joe beating Sting sounds like a good idea, but then what do they do with Christian? I think they're better off going with Jarrett/Joe and Christian/Sting since those pairings already have some history going for them. If they do go with Joe vs Sting I'm not sure what they do with Christian, if he's turning heel he can't wrestle Jarrett and the other top faces are probably Daniels and AJ who are busy with the tag titles.
