I dont think Vince "lost" anything. If they really wanted to keep the WWF name they could have. I mean they lost a case in British court. They could have fought it if they really wanted to. Im sure Vince and Linda have a team of attorneys that wouldve devoured the panda people alive, in a court in the US. But Im guessing that theyve wanted to change the name for a while and now theyve done it. Slowly Vince is changing his company into what he really wants. Its silly for us to really try to tell a billionaire businessman how he should run his company. I look at the WWE now and I dont see the shambles everybody else does. i see a comapny in transition. A few years from now well look back on these last two years as the time WWE changed. And why does everyone cry for the "attitude" era? We didnt like it when it was here. We hated Crash TV and all the stupid gimmicks. So why do we want it back? Was it must see TV? What was so great about it? Anyway my point is, Vince Mcmahon is changing the WWE right now. Hes changed the Roster to what he likes, he has two shows, with no competetion, he has the deepest roster in the history of the sport, and yes he even changed the name of the company. Yes the ratings will slip and they not be the cash generating machine that they were in 1999 but Vince didnt get where he is being stupid. Well not totally stupid... Ok im done

What the press release does is pretend like the event (the lawsuit) DIDN'T EVEN HAPPEN.

That's not true ... Linda McMahon clearly mentions the World Wildlife Fund lawsuit in the press release; she just tries to put a positive spin (see?) on the situation by suggesting that the lawsuit merely influenced the WWF's decision to change the company's name, rather than outright forcing them to change.

Very subtle, but the spin is there.

Does anyone remember when the name "WCW" was first brought in to replace NWA? Did everyone gripe this much?

Ask yourself how the WWFE stock would have been affected if Linda had marched out and said, ``This is a travesty of justice, but the World Wildlife Fund is forcing us to legally change our name; we don't want to do it, but we've got no choice. Please bear with us while we pull our collective thumb out of our collective ass and try to figure out what the fuck we're going to do.''

I see a full dollar drop almost instantly; the WWFE would immediately be seen as incompetent. They wouldn't have a chance.

I agree with most of your post, but this part is waaaaay off base. Trademark law is the way it is for a reason. The company who owns the trademark, the World Wildlife Fund, got to pick the location of the litigation. But don't fool yourself into thinking the ``superior American justice system'' would have seen it any other way. The WWF is rolling over on this one mostly because it would be irresponsible to continue to spend large sums of money on a case it very probably has no chance of winning.

Face it, the World Wildlife Fund copyrighted the WWF trademark more than 40 years ago. Further, the WWFE signed a limited use contract close to 10 years ago. The only possible argument the WWFE has is that ``nobody is going to confuse the two.'' But all the WWF has to do is bring in recordings/emails/letters/etc. from people who have confused the two. Case closed, WWFE loses.

This way, the WWF gets to make a strong move on their own. Yes, they're going to hide it behind spin, but read the wwe.com website and count the articles that don't have spin of some sort. I didn't even have to take off my shoes and socks; neither should you.

Anyone else find it amusing about the possibility of some hippie getting the two confused and found out all this time that he's been donating money to the World Wrestling Federation?

you're right, Alessandro; I should have been more clear in making my point. The Wildlife Fund was discussed at length in the fourth paragraph of the press release. I was referring to the tenor of the lead paragraphs.

Hmmmmmmmm, well I wont argue legalese with you, because it aint my cup of tea, but I still think in this age of endless litigation, Vince and his legal team could have put up a nasty court fight to keep the use of the WWF initials. It couldve been done and I dont think Vince and his ego would just roll over to the Panda people without a fight to the death. Thats why I think he probably wanted to change the name of the company, anyway. So with all the press from WWE about all the changes their making to their programming and such, its obvious that changes have been long planned, which is probably why the creative side has been in a funk, because they have so much else on their plate at WWE. Yeahhhh, thats the ticket, they got a lot on their plate...LOL.

I'm sorry that you can't see my point in all of this.

Ah, I think I see your point now. Or at least, I see a part that makes sense to me anyway. Yes, I can understand that a lot of bitching about the name change on this message board doesn't really do any good, and should probably be kept to a minimum after you first let it be known. So I'll say this once, and then let it drop:

I do not like the name World Wrestling Entertainment, and I do not like the 'scratch' WW logo. I would much prefer a brand new logo (even if it was still only two W's). I think the World Wildlife Fund is stupid for caring about this, and I think the World Wrestling Federation is even more stupid for having made that agreement in 1994. I hope the WWE decides to at least change the logo, and hopefully change the brand name. I will also say that I really like the Kurt Angle "You Suck" T-Shirt, and even if the WWE sucks, I'll probably still buy it.

    That is all.

The change from NWA to WCW didn't just happen in one sudden hit, from memory.

A little bit of history here, the NWA wasn't originally one coherent national promotion as we think of promotions today; it was a series of smaller regional federations, each with their own territory. They used one banner and recognized one champion.

The change came when Vince McMahon Jr., the owner of the biggest territory (NY), decided to take his promotion nationally. To compete, the promoter from the Carolinas, Jimmy Crockett, began buying out the other NWA territories in the hope of building a 2nd league to compete with the WWF nationally.

In fact, at one point he even began co-holding PPV's with the AWA in a deal that fell apart quickly.

Anyways, after his promotion, NWA Mid Atlantic, bought Georgia Championship Wrestling, World Championship Wrestling was born.

The problem is, he didn't have the money to pay for all this expansion. Meanwhile, a young(er) Ted Turner saw the potential of nationally televised wrestling on cable and attempted to buy the WWF off Vince McMahon. When that didn't work, he went to the #2 federation, the Crockett owned NWA - World Championship Wrestling.

That was in about 1988 - 1990 sometime.

Anyways, after his 1990 aquisition until 1993, Turner pushed "World Championship Wrestling" as the federation's name harder than the NWA brandname he didn't own. WCW continued as the main federation under the NWA sanctioning body.

Of course, the relationship between the NWA and WCW pulled out over a dispute over who to recognise as champion, and WCW dropped the NWA name and the NWA as a sanctioning body alltogether.

(A little epilogue, the NWA was reborn with an upstart federation known as NWA Eastern Championship Wrestling as its key promotion, but that deal ended when their champion, one Shane Douglas, threw the NWA title in the trash and declared that ECW would now be Extreme Championship Wrestling).

So to answer your question, WCW didn't change its name from NWA overnight.

My memory on what actually happend is a bit sketchy, if anyone here remembers better please correct where I'm wrong here...
