Once people get used to the new music, they'll realize Sandman is still awesome. He's the most interesting character on the ECW roster, even if he comes out to "Sunshine on My Shoulder."

Sure WWE could use the Motorhead cover, but WWE would still have to pay Metallica. Because they wrote the song.
THANK YOU Mr. Tuesday for saying what needs to be said ... I work for a Music Publishing company and it drives me crazy to hear people say "just get some band to cover it".
WWE would have to obtain a synchronization license in order to use "Enter Sandman" for their programming & I'm sure it comes with a hefty price tag (I heard at one site that the band wanted between $10 to $13 million for WWE's use).

Really...sort of makes you wonder how "tribute", like Battery a Metallica tribute band that I've actually seen, bands make in in the music business. Wow, I agree they should figure out something with Metallica to use Enter Sandman because I've heard it here and other places it isn't going to cut it with that generic theme. That is one thing that REALLY has to change...seriously.

The Duke of Dorchester Pete Doherty is more talented than the guy Angle made look bad. Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing the Duke get wheeled in for an ECW run. Can't move any slower than Terry Funk. Still think Vince should find out how much it would cost to get the rights for the Andrews Sisters singing Mr. Sandman. I'm confused on something: Vengeance is a RAW PPV and John Cena is a RAW wrestler. In what bizarro universe does ECW's Paul Heyman have the ability to name John Cena's opponent at Vengeance? Does Coachman have the ability to name Kurt Angle's next opponent in a quid pro quo arrangement?
Here's all you need to know about why the show was a disaster.
As evident by the ECW debut last night, Vince McMahon is clearly in charge of the creative for the new ECW. Paul Heyman did write the show but it was changed WWE creative. The word backstage was that Heyman had to write the show to meet McMahon's expectations.
- Everyone within the company, including Paul Heyman, thought the ECW show was a total disaster and failure.

It's Stephanie all over. I go from marking out to throwing up.

You mean Diamond Dave Scherer is blaming someone, anyone, everyone OTHER than Paul Heyman for the show sucking? Gee, I sure didn't see THAT coming.
Underwhelming is a good word for it. I didn't expect it to rock my socks off, not yet at least. They're still using the Raw guys and Show and Angle a LOT in liew of some of their other talent, putting Sabu over aside.
It's a shame that the triple threat won't be around.
And was that the Giant Silva that was a part of the FBI???
Hold nothing sacred and you'll never be dissapointed. Especially not this statement.

Eh, it's the first episode, the Edge/Cena thing was one of the "selling points" that they'd set up the night before and they have a PPV to sell that still uses some of those former Raw/SD guys. Heck, they managed to introduce about 20 or so members of their "cast" during a one-hour show.
Give it at least two weeks for the jostling of the "invasion" to resolve and ECW to start doing their own stuff.
Originally posted by CRZThere's a lot of denial in this thread. Can you really not see that as soon as Vengeance is over, you'll start seeing Smackdown superstars come out of the woodwork to appear on the show, along with the requisite hype for WWE Great American Bash 2006? I mean, seriously.
I haven't watched the new ECW yet. We don't get it in Canada, so I downloaded the show, but I've read your recap (and several others) and I'm dreading it. I loved most of the old ECW and I don't want them to ruin it, and it sounds like they're trying.
So I'm not setting out to defend a show that I haven't seen (a show that sucks, by most accounts), but if ECW TV doesn't build to WWE PPVs, what is the reason for it to exist? You can try to build an audience for the new show, but there's no guarantee it will survive past 13 weeks. There are no scheduled ECW PPVs coming until the rumoured one in December. You can base ECW TV around building to ECW house shows, but those are only going to hit a few markets.
Really, without building to WWE PPVs, the show's sole purpose is to build up the ECW brand itself, and that's risky. ECW had (and has) a cult following and a counter-culture attitude; by trying to adapt this for the mainstream, WWE risks alienating the hardcore fanbase that made ECW special in the first place.

You make some good points, but there's an inherent problem in this. ECW and Raw/Smackdown are different brands under the WWE umbrella. There's not supposed to be any crossover. So if ECW TV is always building to WWE PPVs, it follows that there has to be an ongoing, never-ending WWE vs. ECW feud. Such a feud would be, by definition, the dominant angle on both WWE and ECW TV forever. And nobody wants to see that. That's part of what ruined the InVasion, and it did a lot more than contribute to the death of WCW, which never recovered from the boring drudgery of the endless NWO storyline. I expect there to be occasional WWE-ECW crossover matches, but you really have to make the brand a stand-alone thing, or else people are going to get awfully sick of it.

No, you're wrong. There is one brand and only one brand: World Wrestling Entertainment. This expiriment isn't to make Paul Heyman money. It's not to make Ted Turner rich. It's to further line the pockets of Vince McMahon. RAW and SmackDown! are different "brands" in storylines, but when it comes to making WWE money, they're just two different trademarks. This isn't an adventure in creativity for Vince and the rest of WWE, they're just going to do whatever makes WWE more money.
Don't let the name "ECW" fool you. This is not "ECW," it is still "WWE." "ECW" basically means the same thing as "RAW" now.

You misunderstand what I mean by "brand." "Brand" isn't the same thing as "company." Pepsi and Mountain Dew and Sierra Mist and Tropicana are all part of the same company, but they're all different brands -- and they all make PepsiCo a lot of money despite not really being associated with one another.
I completely agree that the only reason for the revival of ECW is to make Vince more money, which is exactly why they eventually have to let the brand stand alone. I said "nobody wants to see" an unending ECW vs. WWE feud. By "nobody," I didn't mean everybody except arrogant Internet fans. I meant nobody. Nobody watching equals no money.

That's exactly right, and that's my biggest concern about this one. Despite being a different brand and having the "After 10" time-slot which would allow them more flexibility for content, they're still taped alongside Smackdown and have to deal with the family-friendly SD audience. That's going to hinder the way they're able to present themselves.

Yeah you're right, this sounds nothing like Vince. Besides, if Vince were in charge your recaps would lose some of their venom and we wouldn't want that.

Does this mean Vince and his daughter were responsible for the final six months of ECW on TNN that were pretty much craptacular?
No doubt Paul Heyman can book a bad show, but ECW on Sci-Fi really didn't seem like it had his fingerprints on it. The whole show, as others have already mentioned, just felt like another WWE show, which is not what anyone here was really looking forward to.

Yeah, it was 1999 WWF Attitude (get it?) without any of the charm, novelty, or overness. And I'm sure that's exactly what Vince's conception of ECW is.
