Just three days away, and I'm excited that my beloved Ukrainian* team has a definite shot at moving to at least through the club round. Forget what Newman says....THE UKRAINE IS STRONG!

Who's your sentimental favourite or actual pick to win? And if you say Brazil, you're no fun.

* = beloved because my dad's background is Ukrainian and, well, because Canada ain't in it

Um...

Not trying to be a smart ass, but is *this* then the correct forum to which the previous (opening) post was moved, or is there another forum that I'm just not seeing?

No seriously. I'm just not sure!

Anyway, assuming this is where I should post, my sentimental favourite would also be Ukraine based upon the fact my girlfriend is from Kiev.

Granted, she couldn't possibly care less about futball, but I'll give them a bit of support anyway.

Oh, and it's just "Ukraine", not "The Ukraine". It stopped being "The Ukraine" upon emerging from the yoke of Soviet Russia.

... I just wish Ireland had qualified! Bah!

I moved it from "Football" to here. The Goon reminded me that four years ago we didn't have a "Sports that Aren't..." forum so we renamed it "Futbol" and put them there, and were we doing that this year? I said, nope, because now we have this forum, so let's use it instead. And now you know.

I am not a huge soccer fan, but I will cheer for the country from whence my grandparents came - Italy.

Here is their newest training video, too:

I shall be wearing with pride my England shirts. I'm going to be at a festival for their first game, and as such I'm sacrificing the chance to watch Alice In Chains and Henry Rollins doing a spoken word set to watch England-Paraguay.

C'mon Spank E why put yourself through the pain? You know Becks is going to do something stupid again.......

As for me, I'm over the World Cup already. It's saturating TV over here, just because its the first time we qualified in 30 years. I'll be interested if we actually win a game and look like progressing. But until then it's still just soccer.

Seeing as I spent two months in Spain ten years ago, I'll be rooting for them.

Getting out of the group stage shouldn't be a problem...

Nah, Becks has matured perfectly as a player, I'm more worried about Rooney or Owen having a setback with their injuries. I'm still not convinced by the 15 minutes or so I've seen of Walcott and don't even get me started on Peter Crouch. Hopefully, Sven will see sense and put Jermain Defoe in the full squad.

Mrs. Dunk is 100% italian so June 17 will not be a pretty day in the dunk household. I will claim the new little dunker for my side but the 2 dunkettes will clearly embrace their italian side and side with mommy against me.

Would love to see the US do well but the group of death is going to be a real test. I fully expect to see Brazil in the final against Germany but would love to see one of the African nations sneak into the final.

That Italian training video is fantastic.

I suppose I will have to lean on my heritage as well. Being half-Dutch and half-English, I've got two decent teams to support. I will also be pulling for the USA, especially in their game against Italy.

I guess to be different, and in the name of my grandma's grandma's grandma's grandma's grandma's grandma's grandma's grandma (that would be sixteen generations before me, right?), I'm rooting for the U-S-of-A.

(Also, I like the Netherlands' orange kits.)

I haven't seen any French supporters so far, but they won't be happy.

So, neither you nor your parents are from Italy, but you'll be rooting for Italy against the United States? That's obviously your call, but I don't get it. I can see someone who was born in Italy (and even someone whose parents spent much of their life in Italy) rooting for Italy, but this puzzles me. Do you speak Italian and/or go to a lot of Italian heritage celebrations? I guess I could see it for someone who is extremely active in the Italian community and really works hard to maintain their familial heritage.

Really bad luck for them. To add insult to injury, their head coach didn't even add Giuly or Pires, both of whom should have been on the team in the first place. Their coach is a nut; it seems the main reason he didn't choose Pires is because of Pires' birthdate. The coach is really into astronomy and he thinks Pires was born under a bad sign.

As for me, I'll root for the U.S. and Mexico (celebrating my heritage) most heartily, but I will also root for S. Korea because my wife is Korean. Other than that, I will probably cheer for underdogs.

<--French supporter

The Pires thing was actually a falling out from 2004. Giuly just wasn't like by Domenech for some reason. Both him and Pires were pretty angry about being left out the first time and said they wouldn't play in case of injury, so even if Domenech had wanted to bring them in now, he couldn't have.

This isn't the worst injury that could happen to us, but this really has been a close knit team, and I hope the team can band together more from this and not fall apart.

Exactly. My father died 13 years ago, but he had eight brothers and sisters. All nine of them were and still are very active in the Italian-American community in Portland, Maine. Two of my uncles have been President of the Italian Heritage Club of Portland. We have had many wedding receptions at the club. There is also the Saint Peter's Bazaar held each year to celebrate Italian heritage with door prizes including vats of olive oil. So, yeah, my family is pretty active in the Italian-American community. Certainly our allegiances will be split during the Italy-US match, but I will still be rooting for Italy first and the US as 1a.

Cool! That certainly explains that!

I love to hear about people keeping their cultural heritage alive. It's one of the things that makes my family gatherings so fun--in addition to the aforementioned ethnic/cultural groups, my mom's parents came from Italy and my dad's grandparents came from France. So, at big gatherings (such as July 4, Labor Day, Memorial Day, etc.), we have quite the eclectic food spread. Unfortunately, no one is still living that speaks either Italian or French primarily, so there are only three languages present anymore. We're working hard to keep that going, but it's really difficult, especially because my wife and I speak English in the home. Other than language, the rest of the cultural stuff is much easier to keep going.
