YOUR HOST: Ricki Lake
YOUR CONTESTANTS: Tim Meadows, Leslie Nielsen, Kathy Najimy, Lance Bass, Paige Davis, Brande Roderick ("Baywatch")
YOUR LINEUP: TONIGHT: The Price is Right

Wed 6/7: Beat the Clock
Thu 6/8: Press Your Luck
Thu 6/15: Card Sharks
Thu 6/22: Match Game

Sounds like...one elimination after every Thursday?

I dunno, The Price is Right is on EVERY day. I might tune in to see how they do "Press Your Luck" - actually, those last four look pretty good.

I'm in for the Card Sharks episode. It's the one game show to date that I've ever tried out for. (The Teen Week version, at that.)

No, I didn't get on.

I watched tonight (and I'll probably watch every night, cause I like all of these shows and there's nothing else on), but I was very disappointed with how they treated TPiR. No inspiration putt from Rikki? No Hole in One...or Two?

Also, I was disappointed that Paige lost...until I realized that this means she'll be on again. I hope she loses every time (except the last one)!

This will get added at the end of each post you make, below an horizontal line. This should preferably be kept to a small enough size.

On one hand, Hole in One used to be a one-putt game...

...on the other hand, an audience member at the Game Show Forum reported that there was a second putt.

There was a LOT of blatant cutting in segments. Lake didn't seem to be terribly well prepared. The celebs didn't seem to always know what was going on either.

This probably would have been better with another host...say, Tom Bergeron, for example.

I noticed Betty White in the crowd last night. She was on the original Match Game & I hope that she's on this new one, along with Leslie Nielsen ...

Betty White was married to Allen Ludden until he died in '81. If there was a game show he was hosting, Betty would be on the panel.

I choose Brande Roderick as the most annoying untalented and not really a celebrity for the block.

I mean Baywatch? She was almost as annoying as the Blonde from last years Big Brother who made it to the end. ANyoen else remember? I'm all for hot women on TV but annoying as all hell I'd rather see Bea Arthur.

My thoughts:

For lowered expectations, Ricki did ok. She's no Bill Cullen, but there could have been much worse (see the latest UK Price is Right) out there.

Regarding Hole in One, I'm not too fazed since it was originally Hole in One -- not Hole in One or Two as it was later reworked.

Myself? I was happy with Fremantle pulling out GIRLS JUMPING ON TRAMPOLINES~! irony with Carolla in the audience.

Tonight will be fun, and the PYL/Card Sharks games will be cool to watch as well. I'll probably be a bit more critical of Ricki on the Card Sharks hosting bit, but it is what it is.

As much as I don't want to say it, they should have gone with Todd Newton.

No Joker's Wild? For Shame. And, Bill Cullen and Gordon Solie had to be long lost brothers.
Nice to see Card Sharks getting respect, especially since that was an NBC game show.
They couldn't get Bob Eubanks to host? I'd settle for Gary Burghoff over Ricki Lake. And, not to be sexist, if she's not dead, I'll settle for Fannie Flagg.
Press Your Luck and Card Sharks would be tough for them to screw up. Match Game is going to be tough to live up to the 70's standards, unless the FCC takes the evening off and the booze and other 'recreational material' is flowing heavily.

I reckon Fremantle doesn't have the rights to The Joker's Wild.

Card Sharks DID air on CBS. Lots of shows switched networks during their runs in the 70s/80s.

Card Sharks was revived in 2001, actually. Press Your Luck was on its second (third if you want to nitpick) life as Whammy in 2003. CS was loooooooooong gone by then (Clip Chips, shudder).

AFAIK, The rights to Wild is owned by Sony and probably didn't grant them and/or get enough money for its use. Sadly, both Cullen and original host Jack Barry have passed on. While remembering the show, I actually prefer Barry over Cullen because Cullen's casual hosting style almost conflicted with the fast-paced, light quiz show. Age was probably taking its toll by then.

Card Sharks 2001 was a screwy affair. Fremantle successfully bastardized the maingame to the point where one contestant could win while doing almost nothing.

Going back on-topic, I was going "Ricki, stop mugging for the camera" a few times tonight. Deal was better executed than Price, I think. The special guest Zonk guy was amusing. You fool!?!

One more thing: here's a listing of the original UK Marathon. Note that Bullseye is not the same show as the one aired here in the 80s, but actually involved darts. Another interesting thing is the inclusion of Sale of the Century; I liked the show watching reruns on USA, but three things could've caused Sale not being included in the US version:

  • Sale lacks the pure nostalgia factor the other shows had for the "Joe Sixpack" crowd.

  • The possibility of watching our low-letter-list celebs engage in a battle of general-knowledge could be grueling to watch.

  • Sale likely doesn't work as a one-off since part of the drama of the show was watching a superchamp go for all the big prizes.

When Gilbert Godfried is the best thing on the show something is wrong. No offense to Gilbert.

If they could ham up to the camera anymore I think I'll get some brown sugar sauce to go with it. Geez, talk about lame. LMADeal was done horribly. Nice to see "regular" people win something and not celebrities who could care less about prizes and money. The whole concept I liked, but after tonight is wearing pretty thin. Here's to better nights next week.

FWIW, the caps I've seen and the stuff I've read points that at least from a set design perspective (look to the last two nights) it is close to original as possible.

LMaD now has the distinction of being the only show/format that I can recall to be on all four networks (ABC, NBC, Fox (as "Big Deal") and CBS).

With Beat the Clock, I'm curious how they will pace it -- but with the other three shows it will be head-to-head. Three will play for the last spot on finalist's row on PYL, then one semi is Card Sharks while the other is Match Game.

As for fremantling, Chris -- Sony owns Joker's Wild, I recall NBCU owning Tic Tac Dough's rights... the Goodson/Todman library is Fremantle's.

Another note -- just give Tim Meadows his paycheck and boot his ass off of the show. He is sapping so much energy it's not funny.

Was it 2001? I mostly remember it sucking. The format was completely idiotic, the aforementioned (but unquoted) Clip Chips, etc. If it's true to the original, then it's just fine by me.

I love this, in theory, but the celebs are hamming it up so much it's hard to watch some times. The most natural one in there is Lance Bass, Tim Meadows and Kathy Najimi look like they'd rather be on a different planet.

But it's probably about a billion times better than summer reruns, so viva old game shows!

They should really dig to the bottom of the barrel and pull out Monopoly. And please tell me I'm not the only one who remembers it. It aired the same summer as Super Jeopardy!

I spent the evening watching middle schoolers spell words on ABC. The Bee was oddly compelling in a way these game show remakes have not been.

Now I can't resist chiming in that I thought No Country was a snoozefest too. Pile on! plus There Will Be Blood was fantastic and I'm someone who rarely watches dramas and even more rarely likes them.
