Thus ends the fifth day of 24.

And you know what. I'm happy. I thought the writers weren't going to acknowledge that Jack is still on China's most wanted list.

And guess what? Jack Bauer being dead was the worst kept secret this season. Not to mention Germany probably wanting Jack's head after he betrayed their agent. German/British guy might've sold Jack out.

So Audrey is still alive which is a surprise. I just hope she doesn't think that Jack left her again. He couldn't help it this time.

So what else? The conspirators are still at large. Jack is in the clutches of China.

A lot of loose ends this season. How will they resolve the conspirator issue? They've yet to resolve German Max from season 2.

Awesome? YES. Yes. Yesssssssssss.

I thought for a second we were getting Milo rather than Chloe's Previously Unreferenced Ex-Husband, but there was so much good here, I can forgive.

They've yet to resolve German Max from season 2.

That thread got resolved in the video game of all things.

I'm not counting that :p . If it didn't happen in the series, than it didn't happen at all.

But for the sake of argument, how did they resolve it in the video game?

I'm glad the writers did what they did. After all the discussion last season of how awesome a season of Jack escaping from a Chinese prison or fighting terrorists in China could be, its good to see the writers are going to explore that. Or is it possible that the writers will leave Jack hanging in China for a year while they let everyone else run around Los Angeles for a season?

Chloe's ex-husband seemed like a silly plot point to bring up so suddenly, but whatever. At least she had someone to talk to at the end. I liked how Buchanan gave her the picture from Edgar (although when did Bill have time to go through his things?)

The Bill-Karen relationship is nice. Is Bill the first CTU head to survive a full day, despite being deposed for a few brief hours?

Count me among the list of those surprised that Audrey survived the day. That's gotta be heartwrenching to have your dead lover show back up, and then less than 24 hours later he's disappeared again. She's sure to be messed up next season (or whenever we see her next.)

My only gripe is that I couldn't believe that Jack would hesitate to kill Logan, but then knowing that he planted the recording device on him, that made sense. I wonder how much of that was an act for Logan, and how much was him legit debating to pull the trigger.

I also loved the irony of Jack sneaking onto the President's copter by pretending to be the copilot, which was reminiscent of Henderson sneaking his man onto the plane as a copilot a few episodes ago.

Also love Jean Smart's look of shame at the beginning of the second episode. Though that 'activity' did go rather quickly...

Overall, an awesome end to a crazy season.

They've got such a grand opportunity with this ending. I'd love for them to take next season entirely overseas, focusing on a rescue mission undertaken by Bill & Co. to get Jack out of Shanghai alive. It'd be interesting to see CTU in an offensive rather than defensive role for a change, and we'd get Curtis "Right Hand of God" Manning to lead the whole she-bang while the new President deals with the diplomatic fallout.

Count me among those surprised that Audrey made it through the season alive. I wonder if they'll bump her off in a guest role early next year or just have her do a disappearing act like Kim.

It's good to see that the WWE isn't backing away from Batista or Cena. There's still some questions lingering over a few of the draft moves they either made or didn't make (Jericho being a prime example), but the stage is set for a solid run to Summerslam that may send the indicator down. The longer Triple H stays away is also a plus...

I dunno. We thought this season was going to be different. Jack evading the government and running for his life along with his friends. Instead that was pretty much dropped after a few episodes going back into the same old, same old.

So I wonder if they have the balls to give us something truly different next season.

And when would the movie happen if they actually do it?

As for this season, I dunno, it was a mixed bag. I really liked the ending and they didn't drop the Chinese plot. I'm disappointed they didn't resolve the issue with Logan's conspirators at all. I'm like people should be concerned about these puppet masters who were pulling the strings and orchestrated all of this. So that I'm disappointed with.

I dislike how they wrote out Chase making him turn out to be a deadbeat. Which is unfair since he showed a lot of integrity in season 3. I felt like he earned our respect.

Kim's appearance well, it didn't work. They bring her in and she's gone as soon as she came in. I think they could've gotten the issue across without bringing her in.

Killing Tony and Michelle was bullshit. I'm sorry but I'm not going to abide it. I thought it was crap that they had Tony out of commission for ten episodes then basically kill him as soon as they came out of it. Basically it was pointless to even keep Tony alive for that amount of time.

Don't tell me it was "too much" if he died in the first episode of the season. I thought it was even more ridiculous he was kept alive just to die half-way through the season. Plus I think you would've needed a character like Tony for the movie so again, I think its crap that he's gone.

It could always be a prequel.

Way to break a table CDAWG!

They kinda explain the plot of the video game on it's wikipedia page, though it's far from straightforward.

With it now officially in the books, I feel good about saying that Season 5 > Seasons 3 & 4. Bierko was a perfectly fine C-villain, Henderson as Evil 24 ended up being awesome and Logan's gradual descent into being more and more evil in the final hours was great.

The finale was carried by facial expressions, from the Mike Novick Smirk when Logan finally got busted to Logan's face when he thought he finally had Jack beaten and then his face when he realized he was screwed after the Secret Service agent hit him with "Not any more!" But the best look of all and an all-timer for me was the wink and smirk by Henderson when he realized Jack had him beat.

I mean, holy shit, that was an awesome moment. 24 and his evil mentor standing a few feet away from each other on top of a friggin' nuclear submarine, Henderson knowing that the student had indeed become the master and deep down, being OK with it and kind of proud of Jack for doing exactly what he would have done in that spot. And then getting shot twice. The whole sub infiltration was interesting from the perspective that the same thing could have and has happened with Jack in Henderson's spot, being forced into that kind of situation and planning his way out the whole time, like Henderson was.

The only disappointment on the Henderson front was that, in the second hour, there was a brief four-way split screen shot and Henderson's corpse was in the bottom left corner as they loaded him on a gurney or whatever, giving me the slightest hope that the season could end with a tight shot of Henderson's body on a slab somewhere, only to have him open up his eyes and have THRILLER EYES.

Some day...some day.

Anyway, Chloe's sleazy ex-husband debuting (I thought they were talking about Milo for a second, too), the final farewell to Palmer (and Jack calling Palmer his FRIEND!), Logan getting slapped, Logan becoming Presidential Wifebeater Charles Logan, Bill Buchanan and his magic tie putting the moves on Karen and them seeming like he was almost going to put the moves on Chloe, Zombie Aaron Pierce, the return of the Jack Bauer File Photo, Jack closing the day stealing a helicopter just like he opened the day stealing one, Aaron Pierce almost certainly going off to live with Derek and his mother, Ray Wise as the next TV President, Mike Novick's final redemption, everybody getting tasered, Jack telling a kid how to kill somebody with detailed instructions down to specifics for whether he was left or right handed...Yep, they still got it.

I'm probably a pretty terrible person, though, for laughing as hard as I did when Buchanan gave Chloe the Edgar photo. She should have been giving him the horns.

The real MVP of the season is Walt Cummings. He dies 7 hours in, and gets his name mentioned in practically every hour afterwards. And now, John Allen Nelson gets his own show on FOX. Good for him!

As mentioned by the good Doctor, this finale was all about the facial expressions, in particular, Henderson's. Enough can't be said about that final standoff between Henderson and Jack. That will go down as one of the most memorable scenes in the show's history. Henderson finally conceding defeat with the smirk and "Good for you, Jack" was the golden icing on the golden cake.

As if he wasn't putting in the greatest performances all season long, Itzin outdoes himself in the finale. He communicates so much and so well with his face. The most memorable Logan scene for me happened during his interrogation. Watch Logan's face drop as soon as Jack mentions that his relationship with Kim was destroyed forever because of Logan. Logan became so heavy with guilt because of this one particular life that he has ruined...the life of one of the most loyal, patriotic and heroic men to ever live. As Jack continues to talk, Logan's guilt is overtaking him. But once it gets back to the point at hand - who are your co-conspirators? - Logan snaps back into reality with such force, it's as if Jack just slugged him in the jaw. What a fantastic actor.

Enough also cannot be said about the gigantic increase in production quality this season. The improved quality and variety of the score has been mentioned several times before. Perhaps overlooked though, is the video editing. The last example from this season that we can look to is, of course, the cuts between Logan's arrest and David Palmer's casket. With the accompanying score, that scene was so bittersweet, giving such feelings of sadness mixed with a sense of satisfaction that justice was finally served. The final shot of that scene - the closeup of Logan's face in the limo - was bone-chilling.

The photo of Edgar and Chloe would have brought a tear to my eye, except that neither of the two actually smiles, and I seriously doubt Chloe would let anyone take her picture.

Very good finale, especially the first 30 minutes.

I stayed tuned for the end for "scenes from next season" and there weren't any. I just saw the same guy from the boat. And not to split hairs, but that Chinese guy was shot by his own countryman, not by Jack.

It was be a good change of scenary if they ran the whole next season in China, but I don't think they would.

And a movie prequel of 24 would really suck, you would already know who would live and who would die.

I know Logan and the wife had a busy day, but if it's that quick they just aren't doing it right. That was over by the commercial brake.

And the tech support guy I would've had return was the coffee guy from season 3 who had most of his scenes deleted.

IIRC, that was Michael Bolton from Office Space. That would've been cool.

So much can be said about this episode, and much of it has already been said. I'm just glad that the creators had the foresight to leave Tzi Ma's name out of the opening credits. I figured that the Chinese would come back into the picture, but seeing his character again was a great surprise.

Oh, and after five seasons, Aaron Pierce finally got his FIRST FREEZIE THINGY! Awesome.

Yessss!

So before the first commercial, Jack stabs a dude to death in the throat, kills another man via hot steam to the face, breaks Bierko's neck with his LEGS and blows away Henderson. That or the rescuing of Secretary Heller and Audrey from Season 4... which was the more awesome "Pre-First Commercial Break" killing spree?

I love Bill Buchanan.

And man... I felt uncomfortable seeing Jack's face so worked over.

I think it'd be cool if next season you had a covert coalition of badasses to save Jack Bauer. A coalition made up of Buchanan, Curtis Manning, Heller, Chloe, and Aaron Pierce. A mission impossible type op where they have to rescue Jack from captivity without causing an international incident.

But they need help. So they recruit--MANDY. Mandy fights for the side of the good guys for the first time in the history of 24. She gets them on the inside and seduces all the top ranking Chinese official who can't resist her American feminine charms.

I was thinking that Chloe's tear was over how truely pathetic Edgar was to have that picture of them, knowing he'd never get any of her. Who know what nastiness he did to himself while looking at it?

This finale really saved the season for me, story wise. Everything fell into place. Shit I was almost expecting Jack to give a nod and a wink to the camera and say "I love it when a plan comes together." I just wish he was able to rough up Logan more. That bastard needed to get a bullet in the brain. Hey, Jack's legally dead, he could have gotten away with it, right?

Now what I'm hoping for with next season, is something along the lines of the scene from SPY GAME where the go in and save Brad Pitt. You really only 'see Brad Pitt' during flashback the whole movie because he's in a jail cell. Let's see the CTU team sneaking into the country and rescuing Jack, but we only see Jack for like the last couple of hours. Let the CTU team do all the work for once (Apologies to Chloe, we all know she's the hardest working government employee EVER!).

TV Tattle is reporting that TV Week is reporting that they WON'T be setting any of next season in China, citing the 16 hour delay in getting him back to LA.

As if any of the season has to take place there.

I haven't listened to the linked interview; TV Tattle assures us of its content.
