I received my first PDA (Palm TX) today and before I can use it, I have to charge it. As per Step 1 of 'Read This First':

a. Connect the sync cable to your handheld and to the USB port on your computer.

b. Plug the AC charger into an outlet and connect it to the handheld.

c. Charge for three hours. Be sure to fully charge your handheld before going on to the next step.

I have complied with those terms, but the problem is - it won't charge. I have had both cords plugged in for hours. Instead of showing a battery charging, the screen tells me to 'Charge batteries.' The Palm seems to recognize the cables, as it beeps when I remove them. I cannot proceed to the next step in the setup until it is completely charged.

Am I doing something wrong?

PDAs and USB can be annoying.
Check the Palm site to see if there is a later version of software/drivers.
Check if Windows (?) recognises the device. If its a work PC, do you have rights to install new hardware?
If you have a choice, connect the cable directly to USB ports built onto the motherboard, usually at the back. Try not to use a usb extension if you can help it.
Some PDAs will actually charge from the USB, if it's a mini usb connection into the phone, try just connecting the USB.
If not, will it charge if you just have the AC charger connected?

All it took to fix this simple problem was hitting the reset button on the back of the device. Now the TX is charged, installed, and ready to...well, I'm not sure what it'll do for me just yet. But it is cool.
